I'm afraid I was ignorant about Bulfinch

From the reviews, I didn't realize this book is a critique of mythology. I was hoping for an anthology. Instead, I got Bulfinch's Cliff's Notes version of mythology and how those myths were reflected in "modern" (circa 18th century) literature and in Biblical verses. I suppose there is some historical insight in Bulfinch's analysis, but I was naively expecting it to be an anthology. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed.

Bullfinch's Mythology is a team effort by many researchers.

This is a great reference book. There are many contributors to the research- for that I am certain. But it takes more than just writing or copying or translating ancient text. This is where the Bullfinch puts all the events( real and imagined) into perfect context. This is not the only good book on the subject, but it should be in a library of any Mythology Maven.

A Literary Must

I don't think anyone can be considered truly educated who does not possess at least some familiarity with the material contained between the covers of this book. For that reason, Bullfinch's Mythology is one of those books that is an absolute must on any educated person's bookshelf, alongside such basic volumes as a Dictionary, a Thesaurus and Bartlett's Familiar Quotations.

Apart from that, Bullfinch's Mythology is one of those books that one can open up at any time, to any page, and always be sure of finding something interesting to read. After all, there is good reason why these stories have survived for hundreds, or even thousands, of years. They are timeless because they are built upon basic human passions, and they will continue to endure as long as the human species does.

Dark and beautiful

This is a solid story, highly recommended for anyone who loves fairy tales or storytelling with a mythic feel. The illustrations alone are worth the price - there are some that are so gorgeous I wish I could hang them on my wall.

I was especially impressed with how deep and twisty the villain is. Almost every word out of his mouth recasts reality, and this really deepens the heroine's psychological struggle.

The tone feels like you're listening to a storyteller of the old school. The structure follows a classic hero(ine)'s journey, with lovely highs and incredibly painful lows and growth and struggle. There's fighting and magic and chases and all, but I enjoyed how the external conflicts mainly serve to unfold layers of the characters. It's a deep story that bears rereading.

Hoard is an excellent storyteller, and he obeys the canons of the fairy tale genre with intelligence; the wearying novelties of the inferior breed of modern versions are firmly excluded, it does not sink into moral pedantry or political allegory, and -- while it deals frankly with evil as a fairy tale must -- the postmodern love of subversion and grit for their own sakes is avoided. Princess Iris is both beautiful and virtuous; the king is righteous and the villain is wicked; the setting and devices are archetypal and, therefore, perfect. (Leah Morrison's color illustrations, another orthodox touch, are an additional treat for the reader.) For this very reason, the story is entirely convincing on a psychological level. Though the modern reader usually expects it to be childish and poorly crafted, the disdain of literary ornament and the accent on action that the fairy take requires, put in the hands of an author who wishes to convey interesting characters, compel him to throw the whole weight of the story into its concrete elements -- character and plot -- and ruthlessly cut any euphuistic padding. What stands will therefore be either unpublishable, or a book of believable characters doing believable things (allowing for whatever fantastical additions to the laws of its universe the story may include). The development of Iris' character makes sense for both herself and the story at every point, and no action in the book is wasted.

Spoiler alert!

I had to read it at one sitting. I love Iris. I know this is a fairy tale, but oh so real. Adoption, growing up in a loving environment, a great birthday party, Iris being cajoled to see and believe what was not true, her wrong doing, her being loved unconditionally by her father and brother, her using this love and forgiveness to bring others back into the fold are all part of this story. Well done Bill. I am eager for my grandson to be old enough for me to read it to him.

Demonology Dictionary and more!

This is the most informative book on demonology that I have read so far.

The writing style is concise but very clear. Mr. Freze seems to cover everything about demonology in a coherent style void of any sensationalism.
I appreciate the inclusion of numerous Scripture quotes to frame the material based on Scripture.

Among the topics and features I really like about the book are:
The very large Dictionary of Demonology. It is comprehensive and even details the most basic terms.
The author lists some of the spiritual "open doors."
Evil intelligence and it's limitations.
Hours of darkness when most demonic activity seems to occur.
Demonic heirarchy or levels.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in the subject of demonology. It is informative, covers a lot of history, and has warnings about the dangers of involvement with dark spirits.

Not what the blurb describes

I had Gift of Sight by Chartel Amos in my ebook wish list for a while, debating on forking off the seven dollars for the kindle version. The blurb had me interested and finally gave in and bought it. At times, it felt like I was reading more than one book at the same time. There is a lot of information in this book at times an overwhelming about of information.
From the blurb I was expecting a novel about an occult/paranormal police force. That is not the case. There is barely a mention of one case and that is it. Then my over all biggest issue with this book is its all leading to this epic battle that ends up being a major let down.
This book was not for me.

A Bright Star Rising on the Horizon

It’s exciting that Marguerite Gray has released this book!

Hold Me Close contains large amounts of internal dialogue revealing the complexities of the main characters, Elizabeth and Louis. The author Marguerite Gray skillfully focuses on the main characters while she causes the minor characters to fade into the background. The novel shows events leading to the American Revolution, but there is a stronger emphasis on the attitudes leading to the war.

Gray weaves strong conflicts throughout the plot. Until near the end of the book, the plot is subtle. Even though it is understated, it is present, influencing the outcome.

As I listened to the book as text-to-speech on my Kindle, I spent the last hour wanting the story not to end. Elizabeth and Louis became so real I didn’t want to let them go. The conclusion of the story left me wanting to read more. I hope there is a sequel.

No word is out of place in this flawless novel. She uses all the senses to make the story realistic.

Marguerite Gray has vast knowledge of history, including the social customs of the story she is writing. Having read her work in a critique group, I know she can paint a realistic, convincing picture of life on either side of the Atlantic. She’s an author whose career I plan to watch.

Awesome book

Hold Me Close is one of the best books I have ever read. (And I am an avid reader!) I was a little leery due to historical angle of the story, but soon was swept away with the beautifully written characters backed by this historical time in America. I learned a lot about this exciting time in America without having the characters overshadowed. I highly recommend this book and can hardly wait until the next ones comes out. Well done Marguerite Gray!

Fascinating look at pre-Revolutionary Charles Town!

Set in the pre-Revolution era of Charles Town (what we now know as Charleston, South Carolina), Hold Me Close captures the faith, the mood, the unrest, the divisions, the emotion, and the intrigue behind this pivotal period in American history. And does so from the perspective of two characters who actually lived and breathed in Charles Town in the 1770s: Louis Lestarjette and Elizabeth Burnham Elliott. To me, that makes the story all the more compelling.

Another thing I find interesting about Hold Me Close is Gray’s portrayal of the interpersonal conflict going on during the Revolution. We tend to associate “brother against brother”, or family member against family member, with the War Between the States, but this glimpse into some of the key players in Charles Town’s pre-Revolution sentiments showed that these difficult dynamics were in play long before America even had states to war between.

Bottom Line: A current of faith runs alongside the historical framework of Hold Me Close, Louis Lestarjette’s journey to a personal relationship with Jesus highlighted as the most important of all the decisions he faces. And as the decision that provides the needed clarity for everything Louis is debating in his heart and head. His friendship with Elizabeth progresses sweetly, and watching both of them mature into their own beliefs – and then gravitate even more toward each other – over the course of the novel added to the enjoyment of their relationship for me. While the historical aspect did often cross over from ‘story’ to ‘lecture’, it is clear that Ms. Gray has done meticulous research and has taken great care in bringing it to life. I found the details fascinating though, which more than made up for occasionally feeling as though I had set aside the fictional novel and picked up a nonfiction text. The characters are intriguing, the time period especially so, and readers will be clamoring for the next installment in this series when they reach the final scene of Hold Me Close.

One-way ticket to the RTH world

I'm so fecking IN LOVE with this series, I still keep annoying Gracen to give me more books. And I WILL NOT STOP!!

Seriously, this series had everything I love (and some things I don't, but those don't make it less awesome). Action, adventure, bunch of supernatural stuff, various kinds of demons and angels, EPIC love stories, kick-@ss heroine, hot sex scenes and a really fascinating story. I cried, I laughed, I screamed, it hurt to ship but I shipped so hard! I was excited, captivated, amazed, impressed and freaking happy This series made a really big impact on my life. There are some books that you just know you'll never forget about. The books in this series are like that. I still remember a lot of scenes and dialogues years after reading them. I'm so glad I decided to follow Madison's and Gracen's journey back when it was still just a weekly blogpost. It's sad to see how underrated this series is and it doesn't get the attention it deserves, so a huge THANK YOU to the author for not giving up on it thus making my life a little bit better.

This is an Epic story and a really amazing series set in a fantastic, exciting world from a really talented and naughty author. Thrilling, heartbreaking and sometimes funny. Featured with some of the most realistic and well-built characters I have ever read. It is absolutely a one-way ticket to the RTH world. Once you enter, you will not want to get out.

Sexy, Seductive, and Addicting

This is a sexy and seductive set of books that will wet your whistle for tantalizing fun and excitement within it's 900 pages. The characters are to die for and I just love each one. This author can soon a tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning and end and you won't be able to hold back the from the laughs and tears and the roller coaster ride of events and shocking scenes. Keep both arms and legs in at all times and enjoy this phenomenal ride of pleasure.

Beauty and the beast (French: La Belle et la Bête) is a very famous traditional fairy tale written by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont.

A wealthy widowed merchant lives in a mansion with his three daughters. All are equal in beauty, but the youngest, Beauty, is kind and pure of heart; while the two elders, in contrast, are wicked, selfish, vain and secretly taunt and treat Beauty more like a servant than a sister. The merchant eventually loses all of his wealth in a tempest at sea.

One day, the merchant becomes lost in a forest. Seeking shelter, he enters a dazzling palace. A hidden figure opens the giant doors and silently invites him in. The merchant finds tables inside laden with food and drink, which seem to have been left for him by the palace's invisible owner. The merchant accepts this gift and spends the night there. The next morning, as the merchant is about to leave, he sees a rose garden and recalls that Beauty had desired a rose. Upon picking the loveliest rose he can find, the merchant is confronted by a hideous "Beast" which tells him that for taking his most precious possession after accepting his hospitality, the merchant must die.

The merchant begs to be set free, arguing that he had only picked the rose as a gift for his youngest daughter. The Beast agrees to let him give the rose to Beauty, but only if the merchant will return. The merchant is upset, but accepts this condition. Beauty says she wants to go to the Beast's castle. The Beast receives her graciously and informs her that she is now mistress of the castle, and he is her servant. He gives her lavish clothing and food and carries on lengthy conversations with her.

Every night, the Beast asks Beauty to marry him, only to be refused each time. For several months, Beauty lives a life of luxury at the Beast's palace, having every whim catered to by servants, with no end of riches to amuse her and an endless supply of exquisite finery to wear...

GENUINE ARTICLE

This rendition of the classic fairy tale is based on the original eighteenth century version. No Disney elements are found here. This original version was written and distributed widely in France to protest the marriage system of the day in which women had no right to choose or refuse a mate. The original version was a full length novel written for adults, which was later shortened.

At the beginning of the tale, the reader meets a wealthy merchant who has six sons and six daughters. They live sumptuously and prosperously. Suddenly, disaster strikes. The merchant loses his home and possessions in a fire, and pirates sack his shipping business. The distraught family retreats to a poor life in a forest cottage, which is their only remaining possession. All his daughters complain with the exception of the youngest named Beauty who is determined to make their meager life a happy one. Then one day she asks her father for a favor. She longs to see one beautiful rose. The merchant sets off to find one and his journey takes him to a mysterious castle. He is left alone but treated lavishly. Suddenly an ugly beast appears. He promises to let the traveler return home if he will return with one of his daughters to live with him in the castle. The merchant reluctantly agrees.

Beauty feels responsible for her father’s plight and volunteers to return with him to the castle of the Beast where they find unexpected surprises and treasures. When it comes time for the merchant to return home, both he and his daughter are distraught. Strange dreams bring about strange occurrences. What will happen to Beauty and the Beast? Remember, I told you that this is not a classic Disney fairytale.

The illustrations are the original nineteenth century drawings by Walter Crane. They are extraordinarily detailed and magnificently colored. The reader will think herself transported to a museum. They add to the flavor of an authentic French period piece. As an adult, I enjoyed this rendition of the classic tale. I believe that tweens and teens will find this “grown-up” rendition of Beauty and the Beast a most appealing one. Available in kindle and paperback versions.

Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorite fairy tales. This is the original version, not the Disney one. The illustrations are spectacular, also. Just wonderful!

A work of beauty

Of all the beauties I must first commend the typeface. Although my aged eyes prefer large print I was halfway through this book before I noticed the miniscule print- it's that clear and easy to read. The illustrations and page adornments fit the story perfectly.

This book counts as a "good story well told" and well illustrated. But then I have a soft spot for the classic fairy tales. ;)

When I was wrestling with the request of others that I write my life story, I heard the Holy Spirit whisper to me, "Stones of remembrance." He caught my attention, and I wondered what He was saying. It was important to the Lord that the children of Israel make a memorial so that future generations who had not experienced the power of God could understand and fear the Lord.

As I pondered that fact, I began to understand that the supernatural experiences I had enjoyed were not just for me to receive revelation of God's wonderful truths, but to leave them for others who would follow as well. And not surprisingly, I had experienced twelve different revelations!

Awesome

I went to the Christian book store to get a wedding gift, then I walked the aisles looking at books...I picked up this book and felt the Lord speaking to me, "This book will encourage you." I looked at it briefly and saw that she (the author) had a "glory cloud experience" and I could relate to it! I looked at the price and thought, "What is my husband going to think if I come home with it and say that the Lord told me to buy it?" It sounded lame, although I was so excited, so I looked at another book she wrote that was two dollars cheaper, but the Lord said, "Not this one, the other one." Needless to say, I bought it and my husband was not mad at all. (I did not realize that Amazon books had these spiritual books too!) Let me tell you, this book is so very awesome. She relays her experiences of the Lord visiting her personally and teaching her personally at various times. I believe that this book was meant for me. She wrote how when she had the glory cloud experience that the cloud got darker and heavier...I always wondered why the cloud I saw around me was grey. This is a book that clearly shows that if you turn to the Lord and seek Him, HE will instruct and guide you and come to you. I loaned this book out and now it has been reloaned to the same person. This book I plan to pass further around...it is a book that will excite and change you, I believe. I think it would be an "understatement" to say I highly recommend it. Have a blessed day in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. May the Lord Jesus bless everything you touch.
