This series is one that I am going to keep my eye on

YA ReviewMy ThoughtsDemon Princess is a young adult fantasy/ paranormal mash up and is the first in the Demon Kingdom Fairy Tales series by Kassandra Lynn. I am such a sucker for fantasy and paranormal story that deal with royalty in some way. I just love a royal family (they normally have some awesome drama.) and I also can’t resist some good ole magic in a castle. So when I saw Demon Princess had not only paranormal royalty, but also the magic of a promising fantasy element, and a gorgeous cover, I knew I couldn’t pass this one up. And while I found it to be a little on the short side, I thought this was a promising start to what seems to be a cool series. I can’t wait for the next book.
Demon Princess has a really great cast of characters. In fact, they were my favorite part of the story. I thought Adrianna (the main character), Keldrin, Xander and Razen all added something unique to the story and I appreciated that they each had a very distinct personality. Demon Princess will appeal to character driven readers. I found the world building and plot to be good as well, but because the story is rather short, there are still things I want answers, and still areas of the story that I am hoping are more fully developed and explored in the installments of the series to come.
This was a story that built for me. I had a bit of a hard time becoming invested and I had to put this book down a few times, but once I got about 20% into the story, I found myself becoming more and more intrigued by the book. It is one that gets better as it goes on, in my opinion. And the romance is one of those star crossed/forbidden love tropes, which I always enjoy. I can’t wait to see more on the romance front in the next book.
Bottom line: if you are a fan of fantasy and paranormal stories featuring demons, magic and a forbidden love, Demon Princess is a quick read that I think you will enjoy. The series is one that I am going to keep my eye on.

Probably something a little like Kassandra Lynn’s Demon Princess

What do you get when you add demon summoning and magic to a teenage Romeo and Juliet story? Probably something a little like Kassandra Lynn’s Demon Princess, the first book in the author’s all-new Demon Kingdom Fairy Tales series. Course, it doesn’t quite start the way Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers did. For one thing, that tragic love story didn’t start with a demon princess getting summoned into the service (or rather slavery) of a student mage who resents her for not being a flashy dragon.
Which is what happened in this story, and it leaves Princess Adriana both furious and mortified. Especially when the boy who summoned her turns out to be a sullen, resentful and rather weak mage who takes out his frustration and jealousy on her when, thanks to her refusal to reveal her true nature, he decides she’s nothing special. Fortunately, his cousin and roommate, Keldrin, is much kinder (not to mention good-looking!).
Thus begins an adventure Adriana doesn’t need right now, considering her brother is missing and her father has also disappeared. As the demon princess and Keldrin get to know each other, suddenly the fact that their races are supposed to hate one another seems to matter to her less and less—but she fears letting him know what she is. And even as she fights to win her freedom, she finds herself reluctant to leave the boy who’s shown her such kindness and caring.
This book is a pretty short read—it took me less than two hours to get from start to finish. It’s fairly light, and definitely appropriate if you’re looking for a YA fantasy with lots of flashy magic and enjoy the star-crossed lovers trope. The plot is fairly straightforward, although some of the elements and characters seem underserved, which makes me think they might be featured later in the series. More than that, while I will try not to share any spoilers, I will say that the way the author left things makes me hope that we’ll be seeing a more definitive closure in a later book.
As far as the reading experience goes, this was light and fun, with a good dose of action and danger and even magical dueling to boot. I wished a bit that the author had added a little more dimension to Adriana and Keldrin as characters, maybe fleshed out their back stories and the history behind their kingdoms’ enmity a little more so the feels could really saturate the read. I would also have liked to see more of their disparate cultures. Despite this, Adriana showed strength, wit, and intellect. Keldrin is gifted and has a strong sense of morality, and he’s kind to boot.
Still, despite a touch of blandness, this story, and the world Lynn has built for it, shows a lot of potential, something I hope I’ll see in the next books in this series. I have a lot of questions, particularly about the mythology that’s hinted at with regard to the Savior, about Keldrin’s role in his kingdom’s society, about what the demon court is like, and about Adriana’s family. I’m hoping these questions will be answered in book 2, Demon King, which will be out tomorrow, and book 3, Demon Queen, which will be released in April.

Basic outline of a story, left wanting more
By Amazon Customer
This book has a great idea but lacked a ton of depth and detail.
I would have liked more conversation to have occurred between the characters, especially to have Aldric to have explained his actions more.
I felt sadness for Adri through most of this book. The mage/summoning creature relationship seems horrible. I agree with Adri that no person should be given that amount of control over another.
There are many mysteries and questions that are left unanswered. I am undecided if I want to invest in unraveling them.
