Christ Is King: Paul's Royal Ideology, by Joshua W. Jipp

Until recently, many scholars have read Paul's use of the word Christos as more of a proper name ("Jesus Christ") than a title, Jesus the Messiah. One result, Joshua W. Jipp argues, is that important aspects of Paul's thinking about Jesus' messiahship have gone unrecognized. Jipp argues that kingship discourse is an important source for Paul's christological language: Paul uses royal language to present Christ as the good king. Jipp surveys Greco-Roman and Jewish depictions of the ideal king and argues for the influence of these traditions on several aspects of Paul's thought: king and law (Galatians 5–6; Romans 13–15; 1 Corinthians 9); hymning to the king (Colossians 1:15-20); the just and faithful king; the royal roots of Paul's language of participation "in Christ"; and the enthroned king (Romans 1:3-4; 1 Corinthians 15:20-28). Jipp finds that Paul's use of royal tropes is indeed significant. Christos is a royal honorific within Paul's letters, and Paul is another witness to ancient discussions of monarchy and ideal kingship. In the process, Jipp offers new and noteworthy solutions to outstanding questions concerning Christ and the law, the pistis Christou debate, and Paul's participatory language.

Review
"Joshua Jipp has produced a carefully researched, lucidly written, and compelling case for the influence of ancient ideologies about good kingship on Paul's Christology. His work invites us to rethink our understanding of certain central issues in Pauline theology, not least ‘participation’ and &lsquorighteousness/justification.’ Indeed, Jipp demonstrates that royal motifs permeate Paul's letters. An important book." --Michael J. Gorman, St. Mary's Seminary & University

"It seems that scholars have greatly neglected the royal dimensions resonating in and around Paul's repeated designation of Jesus as Christ or Messiah. In Jipp's skillful hands, the rich and complex discourse of kingship prevalent in Paul's day is shown to lie at the heart of many of his most important motifs and arguments. The result is the introduction of significant new interpretative angles on almost all the key questions in current Pauline analysis, coupled with the advocacy of a bold new proposal for the center of Paul's thought as a whole. This is an important book, creative, comprehensively researched, and thoroughly argued, by a New Testament scholar of rapidly increasing stature." --Douglas Campbell, Duke Divinity School

"This is a very impressive book. Bringing his formidable classical learning to bear on the Pauline epistles, Joshua Jipp shows how Paul's royal messiah Christology, long maligned or neglected by modern interpreters, offers solutions to several thorny problems in the interpretation of the apostle. Scholars of Paul and of early Christology, take note." --Matthew Novenson, The University of Edinburgh

"Combining an impressive command of both Greco-Roman and Jewish literature with close analysis of Paul's letters, Joshua Jipp convincingly argues that the designation "Christ" should be taken, not as an empty marker, but as a pointer to ancient discourse about kings. By placing key passages in Romans, 1 Corinthians, Philippians and Colossians in conversation with what was expected of the ideal king, Jipp throws new light on Paul's language and provides significant insight into Paul's understanding of Jesus. A fascinating proposal regarding Pauline Christology!
By Alec Lucas
Talented New Testament scholar Joshua Jipp makes an intriguing argument that Paul's Christology draws on ancient notions of the good king in Israel's Scriptures and in Greco-Roman kingship ideology. Those who are unfamiliar with either of these contexts will especially benefit from reading this book. Seasoned scholars and veteran biblical interpreters will find much to mull over as well. Indeed, Jipp is at his best when he applies his proposal to long-standing scholarly debates, such as the meaning of the "law of Christ" (Gal 6:2; 1 Cor 9:21). Jipp views the religious-historical context of this concept as "the notion of the good and virtuous king who embodies the law and establishes a law-observant model within himself (i.e., the king as living law/law incarnate)." This context explains Paul's positive linkage of the Law and Christ and exonerates Paul from otherwise premature charges of an "ironic, playful, haphazard, or contradictory" use of language. Jipp's insight about the "law of Christ" is but one nugget of gold in a book full of them.

Valuable work on Paul's Christology
By JTG
What is meant when Paul says the “law of Christ?” How can a Jew conceptualize and worship “a second divine figure next to Yahweh”? “What does Paul mean when he uses participatory language to speak of Christ’s people sharing in Christ’s identity and narrative?” Additionally how did Paul develop his participatory soteriology? How is one to understand the justice/righteousness language in Romans? “And what did Paul hope that this construction of Christ the king would accomplish in the lives, rituals, social existence, and communal ordering of his churches?” (11)

To these questions and more Dr. Jipp proposes a deeper and more extensive understanding of ancient kingship discussions and their reworking in Paul’s Christ discourse. Thus, more than showing that “Christ” is an honorific, Jipp endeavours to show that situating “Christ” within ancient kingship discourse actually helps one to understand Paul’s arguments within his various letters. In part, by ancient kingship discourse, he means to tap into discussions concerning what the good/ideal king looks like? What does he do? What is his relation to the people? …to God? Using this background of the common discourse of ancient kingship, Dr. Jipp’s main proposal seems to be that “Paul was attempting to rework the symbolic universe or social imagery of his churches in order to reorder the allegiances and practices around the reign of Christ the King” (11). Thus, Paul is taking and transforming the common motifs of royal ideologies of the time in order to “invent a new royal ideology of Christ the King” (276). The first chapter lays the groundwork and sets up the arguments contained in the subsequent chapters. Here Dr. Jipp sorts through a myriad of Hellenistic-Roman and Israelite-Jewish writings on kingship discourse, and while he claims it is “more anecdotal than comprehensive” (41), it is nonetheless extensive and weighty for his argument. Building on this background Jipp’s subsequent chapters investigate four “case studies” within Paul’s letters where the reworking of motifs and topoi of ancient kingship discourse help to elucidate Paul’s arguments concerning Christ the King: Christ the king as living law; Hymns of praise to Christ the king; Sharing in the Rule of Christ the king; God’s righteousness and the righteous king in Romans.

I found the book to be an engaging and insightful read. Well worth shelling out the cash, as it is an important resource for anyone interested in Paul’s writings and Christology. Here are just a few general aspects I believe make this text worth the purchase.

1. Something must be said for Jipp’s clarity in writing. Often direct and to the point, the logic of each chapter is well laid out and easily followed.

2. Biblically grounded. His argument is, in many ways, a historical critical understanding of ancient kingship discourse and the explanatory power it provides to Paul’s letters. So through case studies on various biblical texts, his argument is grounded in scripture and lends to greater understanding of the Bible.

3. Scholarly. This work interacts with modern works in this area, and makes extensive use of primary sources. It is very well researched. Some have said that this thesis even reaches to inform a new “center” of Pauline thought.

4. Not just for scholars. While Jipp makes use of technical language and Greek citations, the straightforwardness of his writing makes it accessible for any biblically informed reader.

5. Important for the Church. In my opinion, this is one of the more significant implications of his work. It is not only an important study in Pauline Christology, but it informs how we worship Christ as King, view ourselves as a part of his kingdom, and understand the tangible ways in which we participate in the king’s rule. To my reading it influences the way we should think about discipleship, and gives greater weight to the necessity of living in and partnering with Christ’s rule.

In the end, I really enjoyed this book and think it is a great resource for anyone interested Paul.

Christ IS King
By S. Robinson
you can read my full review here: wp [.] me/p3JhRp-T9

In "Christ is King," Jipp’s basic argument is that “Paul used, reworked, and applied ancient conceptions of the good king—both Greco-Roman and Jewish—to Christ in order to structure reality or the symbolic universe of his congregations” (9).

This does not mean that Christ was simply another king among many. “Paul clearly portrays Christ as absolutely set apart from and superior to any other ruler” (10). Thus we can’t (and won’t) fully understand Paul’s language unless we understand that Paul is “frequently . . . setting forth a vision of Christ as the king” (11).

In his introduction, Jipp lays out his basic argument, surveys kingship discourse in Greek, Hellenistic, Roman writings, and in the remains of temples, statues, coins, etc. Next he surveys Israel’s conception of their king by looking through the Old Testament (especially the Psalter) and Second Temple texts.

Chapter 2 looks at Christ the king as living law, and Jipp tries (and I think succeeds) to make sense of the phrase “the law of Christ” (Gal 6.2; 1 Cor 9.22).

Chapter 3 looks at the Christ hymns found in Colossians 1.15-20 and Philippians 2.6-11. Hymns were written about Greco-Roman kings for the benefactions they gave to their people. Christ, the Son of God, was elected by God, shares his throne, rules on his behalf, and brings peace and harmony. Christ is worthy of divine worship.

In chapter 4, since we are in Christ’s kingdom, we share his Holy Spirit, he is the first fruits of the resurrection (a resurrection that believers will surely experience), believers share “in numerous aspects of Christ’s rule” (143). Christ participated in our lowly, destitute estate so that we could participate with him in his glorious kingdom.

In chapter 5 Jipp contributes to a notoriously difficult discussion: the righteousness of God, and he does this while looking at how God’s righteousness is seen in the righteous King in Romans.

Conclusion
I have nothing negative to say about this book. I only wish it were longer! Jipp is scholarly, well-researched, and interacts with both modern works and primary sources, yet his writing is clear and understandable. He has clarified many difficult concepts for me and has helped me better understand my King and the position I and other believers have under our King.

Jipp succeeds in his mission to show how Paul reworked the “good-king” system that the rest of the culture used to represent their own faulty kings. Christ is the true, perfect, loving King who brings peace and who allows us to participate with him in his righteous kingdom. He will not leave us to rot in our graves, but will come back to resurrect us into an eternal life with him.

Very enjoyable fantasy/mystery
By Amazon Customer
This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read. It is the first in Black's The Twisted Files series. From start to finish, the characters are interesting, quirky, and fun to know (even the villains -- if you can really figure out who they are). (With shades of Harry Dresden) Brendan Hunter has to solve a twisted mystery in his world -- where fairy tale characters live and magic abounds -- inevitably saving the damsel and the city. I very much look forward to the next installment of The Twisted Files (hopefully soon).

Broken: Returning in Desperation to the Cross encourages Christian readers to recall and recapture the powerful desperation of the day of their justification.

“Pastor Matty is an excellent and dynamic gospel preacher with a strong Bible teacher in him. I cannot call him a Bible teacher because he preaches so strongly, yet I cannot neglect the Bible-teaching gift that is so overwhelming. Some of us have encouraged him to put his sermons into written form so they can be preserved and distributed. This book does just that. What you read here is fuel for revival and awakening, a no-nonsense call to live true to the Gospel and look deep in the heart. At the same time, you will come to know his upbeat personality that comes through regardless of walking through some very rocky and rough spots.”

Dr. Lon Chenowith

Director of Missions and Associational Missionary

Sandy Run Baptist Association, NC

“My friend and colleague, Pastor Matty, has a unique story to tell. After wandering aimlessly in a fog of his own making, God, through Christ, finally broke his will. Now this ‘new creation’ has a message of brokenness from which all believers can benefit.”

Jerry Fugate

Pastor, Friendship Baptist Church

I might be wrong, but:
By Ernest Latta
The author has an odd style that not everyone will put up with. The stories are all right but when set in the odd flowery language of the writer they lose much of what should be, and could be, a very enjoyable journey into Irish fireside story telling.

Life in Camelot under the good King Arthur is under attack from Morgana the evil ...
By Sara Marie
As a long time fan of Regan Black I was excited she was returning to her paranormal beginnings.
In Heart of Time she builds the story's world in the era of King Arthur and
the Knights of the Round Table.

Life in Camelot under the good King Arthur is under attack from Morgana the evil sorceress. Even
King Arthur's personal wizard Merlin is worried. To rid the world of Morgana's evil Arthur has carefully
chosen 3 of his favored knights to do battle with the evil sorceress.

This short novella has me excitedly waiting for the release of the first knight's quest.

I received a review copy from the author in return for an honest review.

Mike Kinley hated weddings.

Maybe hate was a little strong, he amended as he guided a team of perfectly matched bays into the shade of a nearby oak tree. Setting the carriage's brake with his boot, he glanced over at the gazebo where a photographer was taking shots of the bride and groom he'd just delivered. Poor kids, Mike thought with a grimace. They had no idea what they were in for.

Then again, neither had he. He'd done everything in his power to make Dana happy, and where did that get him? Divorced and wishing he'd listened to his head instead of his heart. Now he was thirty years old and working seven days a week desperately trying to hold up his end of a faltering family business. If they couldn't come up with a way to bring in more cash—and soon—their shaky bottom line would crater to a depth they wouldn't be able to recover from. They'd be forced to sell the place that generations of Kinleys had worked so hard to build up from a scenic bluegrass meadow to the well-respected Gallimore Stables. He and his brothers would be hunting for jobs, and his mother would lose the home she cherished so much. While Mike couldn't deny that weddings brought in some much-needed revenue, they sure were tough on his nerves.

And seeing as it was early May in Kentucky, wedding season had only begun.

Hoping to get himself back to his usual even keel, he jumped down and took a small tackle box from the well where he rested his feet when he was driving. Taking out a soft cloth and brush, he began rubbing the horses down, talking as much to entertain himself as them.

"There's my girl, Penny," he cooed in a quiet voice. "We'll get you shined up, and then it's your turn, Ginger. Folks'll want to pet you later on, so you've gotta be looking your best."

Breaking his own strict rule about not feeding the horses, he slipped a hand into the pocket of the elegant morning coat his sister forced him to wear for these gigs and brought out a few sugar cubes for each of them. After they slurped down their treats, he ran his hands down their legs in a practiced motion, lifting their hooves to make sure no gravel from the estate's pathways had gotten wedged into their shoes.

Satisfied that everything was okay, he stood between them and patted their outside shoulders. "Lookin' good, ladies."

In unison, the beautiful mares tossed their heads and whinnied back at him. Behind him, he heard a woman laugh. Careful not to startle the horses, he slowly turned to find a slender bridesmaid coming down the wide steps that led out to the gardens from one of the three reception halls. Wearing a pale blue dress that looked as if it was made of spun sugar, she seemed right at home in her elegant surroundings. A few curls had escaped her elaborate hairdo, framing a pair of sparkling eyes that were nearly the same color as her dress. His poetic reaction to her was totally unlike him, and he sternly reminded himself to keep things professional.

"If I didn't know better," she commented in a melodic drawl, "I'd think they understood what you said to them."

"Oh, they did. They're female, so they can never get enough compliments." Even to his ears, that came across as jaded, and he tried to soften the impact by extending his hand. "Mike Kinley, carriage driver."

After a moment, she gave him a shy smile and shook his hand. "Lily St. George, runaway bridesmaid."

That was a new one, he mused with more than a little curiosity. Normally, he wouldn't even think of asking her to explain. But he had at least an hour to kill while he waited for his passengers, and although he thought horses made great companions, they weren't much in the conversation department. "Mind if I ask why?"

"My younger sister is the bride, which is wonderful." Pausing, she frowned. "The groom is my ex-boyfriend."

"Not so wonderful." When she sighed and nodded, the sadness that came into her eyes brought back some of the mood he'd been trying to shed. Thanks to Dana, he knew how it felt to be cast aside and then discover how easily you'd been replaced. So, even though he knew it was probably something he'd end up regretting, he offered her a solution. "The ceremony's over, right? You could just leave."

"My whole family's in there, so I can't do that. What would everyone think?"

That it was cruel to ask you to be part of your ex's wedding party? Catching himself before he insulted this sweet stranger, he searched for a way to lift her spirits. He noticed her eyeing the horses, and inspiration hit. "Would you like a tour of the grounds?"

"In the carriage?" When he nodded, her eyes rounded with excitement. "I'd love to, but are you sure it's okay? I mean, you're working another wedding."

"We're waiting for them to finish their pictures," he replied with a nod toward the large group, "and the horses get antsy when they stand still for too long. We were headed out for a walk and some water, anyway."

Technically, that was true, even if he hadn't been planning to go just yet. For this time of year, the day wasn't all that warm, so he figured the extra circuit wouldn't do the horses any harm. While he didn't normally put himself out for wedding guests this way, the delight shining in Lily's eyes told him he'd made the right decision to make an exception for her.

As he prepared to hand her up into the tufted velvet passenger section of the carriage, she hesitated for some reason. "Is something wrong?"

Casting a longing look at the padded driver's seat, she turned those stunning baby blues on him. "Could I ride up front with you?"

"Most folks like the royal treatment."

A flicker of disapproval flashed across her face, and she firmly shook her head. "Not me. Besides, if I sit in back, we can't talk to each other."

That had been part of his plan, Mike admitted to himself reluctantly. Harsh experience had taught him not to trust anyone—especially anyone female—too easily. His tried-and-true strategy was to keep people at a safe distance until he could be sure they were who they seemed to be. Because of that, he didn't have a lot of friends, and the ones with the integrity and fortitude to get through his defenses were there to stay.

"I'm not much of a talker," he hedged, hoping to dissuade her without being outright rude.

"That's okay," she replied brightly. "I am. And I'd love to sit up near the horses, if they won't mind."

Her concern for the mares' preference settled it for him. Anyone who considered the feelings of animals was on the way to being all right in his book. "Let's ask 'em. Whattya think, girls?"

Right on cue, Penny nodded her approval while Ginger let out a muted whinny. Laughing, his passenger said, "I think they like me."

Who wouldn't? Mike nearly blurted. Firmly shoving the errant thought aside, he bowed the way his sister insisted he do and politely handed Lily up to the wide bench driver's seat. Then he circled around the carriage and settled in beside her. As he picked up the reins, it occurred to him that he probably wasn't the first guy to go out of his way for her. "Just so I don't end up in trouble, are you here with anyone?"

"No." The light in her eyes dimmed, but she quickly recovered and gave him what was obviously a determined smile. "I'm alone."

Her resigned tone made him want to do something about that, and he cautioned himself not to follow that crazy impulse. Romantic nonsense, he reasoned, brought on by the tenth wedding he'd worked in the past month. Even a pragmatist like him could take only so much sentiment before he was tempted to ignore his better judgment and join in the insanity.

In the interest of keeping things between them as light as possible, he gave her a quick grin. "Not anymore. The Marbury Estate is one of the oldest in Kentucky whose original main house and grounds are still intact. What would you like to see first?"

"Everything."

"You heard her, girls." He clucked to the gleaming mares. "Let's get a move on."

As they started off in an easy trot, Lily said, "When they move, it's like brown silk floating over the ground. They're so beautiful."

A woman after his own heart, he realized with a mental sigh. This little tour was either the best idea he'd ever had, or the worst. Then again, afterward they'd part ways and never see each other again, so he figured there was no harm in being nice.

"So," he began in his best conversational tone, "where are you from?"

For some reason, she held back for a moment, then seemed to decide it was all right to share her hometown with him. "Louisville."

After that, she looked around the manicured park, at the horses, the stately oaks arching overhead, anywhere but at him. He couldn't imagine what all the avoidance was about, but he reminded himself that women were complex creatures no man in his right mind would even pretend to understand. The runaway bridesmaid had a right to her secrets, especially since her personal history was absolutely none of his business.

Looping onto a path that wound through the rose garden, he switched to a lighter topic. "What do you do?"

Immediately, her mood brightened, and the smile that lit her face nearly knocked him sideways. "Actually, I just got my first teaching job. I'll be filling in for a kindergarten teacher for the rest of the school year while she's out on maternity leave."

"Hope it goes well for you."

"So do I," Lily agreed in a tentative voice. "It's my first assignment since getting my degree, and I have to admit I'm a little nervous about taking over a class this way. Young kids get really attached to their teachers, and I'm hoping they'll give me a chance."

Mike couldn't picture anyone not taking to Lily right out of the gate, but he opted not to mention that. "You're bigger than them. How tough can they be?"

"You have no idea."

He wasn't quite sure what to say, and he searched his limited social repertoire for some encouraging words. When he recalled how Mom used to handle the passel of kids always roaming around the farm, he offered, "If things get too bad, you can always bribe 'em with cookies. Works with me, too."

What had possessed him to add that last comment? This pretty teacher couldn't care less about whether he enjoyed snacks or not. Fortunately, either she didn't notice his misstep, or she was incredibly forgiving.

"Cookies," she echoed with a little grin. "I'll keep that in mind. Do you have any other suggestions for me?"

He answered with the kind of laugh that was pretty rare for him these days. "Not hardly."

"But you know children like cookies. That's a start."

"Everyone does," he said, giving her a sidelong glance as he guided the team around a sweeping curve in the path.

She rewarded his uncharacteristic helpfulness with the most incredible smile he'd ever seen in his life. As he felt himself returning the friendly gesture, inwardly Mike groaned.

It was a good thing she lived in Louisville. His gut was usually bang on about people, and it was telling him that Lily St. George had the potential to cause him no end of trouble.

Calling Mike Kinley an interesting man would be the understatement of the year.

To Lily's great relief, he hadn't reacted to her name the way most people did when she first met them. That was just the way she wanted it, since she despised having to be pleasant to people who were clearly more interested in her wealthy, connected family than in her. She couldn't recall how many times supposed friends had asked her for an introduction at one of the many companies her family owned, only to ditch her once they had what they wanted. Finally, in college she'd had the opportunity to start over with a fresh batch of friends who had no clue about her privileged background. She'd confided the truth to a select few, but only after she was confident they'd bonded with her and not her family's money.

Mike took her on a leisurely tour of the estate's breathtaking grounds, and she gradually relaxed as they chatted off and on about nothing in particular. While he concentrated on the horses, she took advantage of the opportunity to study him more closely. Being female, she couldn't help admiring what she saw.

Any man would look dapper in the crisp white shirt and gray morning suit, but there was more to his appearance than that. Sun-streaked brown hair brushed his starched collar, telling her he spent a lot of time outdoors. His white gloves rested on the seat between them, and she saw that his large hands were calloused from plenty of hard work. The easy, confident way he held the reins spoke of a lifetime spent around horses.

And then there were his eyes. A unique mix of blue and gray, they focused on her more directly than most people's did, as if he was listening intently to her. She didn't think she was being particularly entertaining, which made his attention even more flattering. Unlike most men she knew who went out of their way to compliment her appearance, this outdoorsy carriage driver actually seemed interested in what she had to say. It was a refreshing change.

As if that wasn't enough, he seemed to know everything about the antebellum estate, patiently answering her questions and pointing out various historical spots spread throughout the sprawling grounds. The house itself had been around since the early 1800s, surviving the ravages of the Civil War by serving as a headquarters for both Union and Confederate commanders. The well-tended gardens were breathtaking, filled with brilliant colors and bracketed by what looked to be miles of immaculately trimmed boxwood.

It was the ideal spot for a wedding, and she could understand why Natalie had chosen it. The husband she'd chosen to share that day with was another matter altogether, but Lily reminded herself it wasn't her place to question the decisions her younger sister made.

Now that the wedding was over, Lily's only job was to support the new couple.

Unfortunately, her less-than-stellar experience with Chad made her fear that the freshly minted Mrs. Wellington was going to need all the love and understanding she could get.

"This is such a pretty spot," Lily commented while they drove beneath a grove of oaks draped in Spanish moss. Nearby stood the mansion with its wide front steps, where her sister's photographer had snapped dozens of pictures for the wedding album. "I wonder how many people have been married here over the years."

"A few."

His tone struck her as being overly polite, and she laughed. "Sorry about that. You must have heard that about a million times."

"A few," he repeated with a wry grin. Pulling gently on the reins, he stopped the horses near a small creek that wound its way through the picturesque clearing in the trees. "If you don't mind stopping here for a few minutes, the girls could use a drink."

"I don't mind a bit. Would it be all right if I pet them while they're drinking?"

He climbed down and gave her a dubious once-over. "You want to handle horses dressed like that?"

"Trust me—your horses are a lot cleaner than the best man's toast was."

Mike laughed, then held up a hand for her to take. The old-fashioned gesture seemed ideally suited to this fairy-tale setting, and she felt like a princess when she landed on the ground beside him. Her heels sank into the soft soil, and rather than ruin the dyed satin shoes, she stepped out of them onto the velvety grass.

Her Small-Town Cowboy
By Jasmyn9
Mia Ross is the queen of small town inspirational romances for me. I love her characters and her places. Her Small-Town Cowboy definitely delivered on the fun characters, but it fell just a tad short on the small town itself. Lily and Mike meet in a very unexpected way. It had me chuckling to see them interact for the first time - and what they both thought was the only time.

Both are surpised to find each other again when she begins to substitute teach for his daughter. His daugher was such a charmer. She was everything I could have wanted from her character. The perfect little mix of mischievousness and sweetheart. And she's determined to keep Lily in her life somehow.

Now this isn't a case of a little girl getting two people to fall in love. What I liked best was that she was just one of the forces pulling Lily and Mike together. There were so many more, and was mixed very well. But....yes, the dreaded but....the town just didn't shine in a way that I've come to expect from Mia Ross. The other people in the town were fun, especially the school kids, but I wanted to see more of the places and sights.

A great story with kids, horses, and love!
By proudmom508
Oaks Crossing is a new series from Mia Ross and I love it! Her Small-Town Cowboy is the story of Lily, a teacher, and Mike, a horse trainer and single dad. Lily has stepped away from her wealthy family to begin her teaching career in a small community. Mike is raising his daughter, Abby, with the help of his mom and large family on the family's horse farm. He returned to the farm after his dad's death and has taken over operations but the farm is failing. Lily becomes Abby's kindergarten teacher. Lily decides to learn to ride at the farm and also helps come up with the idea of starting a riding school at the farm. She is awesome at working with kids and animals. This makes her a great partner with Mike who excels at working with animals. Mike has been emotionally hurt by Dana, his ex-wife, who walked away from the marriage when Abby was a baby. Mike needs to work on forgiving Dana and trusting Lily to not hurt him. Great story with kids, horses, and love that I had trouble putting down. I can't wait to read more books in the Oaks Crossing series!

A runaway bridesmaid and the house carriage driver!
By FL Cat Lady
Nice story of a kindergarten teacher falling in love with the single father of one of her "kids" and his reluctance to committ to a new relationship after being burned by his ex-wife.

Lots of cute kids, horses and family.

A very nice relationship story...

I received a free copy through Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for an honest opinion.

Amazon.com Review
One measure, perhaps, of a book's worth, is its intergenerational pliancy: do new readers acquire it and interpret it afresh down through the ages? The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, translated and introduced by Gregory Hays, by that standard, is very worthwhile, indeed. Hays suggests that its most recent incarnation--as a self-help book--is not only valid, but may be close to the author's intent. The book, which Hays calls, fondly, a "haphazard set of notes," is indicative of the role of philosophy among the ancients in that it is "expected to provide a 'design for living.'" And it does, both aphoristically ("Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now take what's left and live it properly.") and rhetorically ("What is it in ourselves that we should prize?"). Whether these, and other entries ("Enough of this wretched, whining monkey life.") sound life-changing or like entries in a teenager's diary is up to the individual reader, as it should be. Hays's introduction, which sketches the life of Marcus Aurelius (emperor of Rome A.D. 161-180) as well as the basic tenets of stoicism, is accessible and jaunty. --H. O'Billovich

Review
Lots of good feedback on this wonderful book, including calls from Andrew Roberts and AC Grayling to say how much they are enjoying it. This is translating very well in to coverage. With radio features including FRONT ROW (BBC RADIO 4) on Wednesday 5 April which included not only a clip from the film Gladiator but also from the lovely Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs who wasa fan. And the producer says this generated the most calls they've had for along time, asking for further details of the book. THE VERB (BBC RADIO 3) included an interview with the translator Gregory Hays. "See the movie, read the book. Hard on the heels of Richard Harris's portrayal of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator comes a new translation of that ruler's celebrated Meditations." JOAN SMITH, THE INDEPENDENT "Sparky and slangily readable, and for those who know Marcus only as the Richard Harris character in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, this is a chance to become better aquainted" BLAKE MORRISON, THE GUARDIAN We are expecting good review and thinkpieces including THE EVENING STANDARD, and THE OBSERVER with a feature in the DAILY MAIL tbc. --online

Review
“The emperor Marcus Aurelius, the proverbial philosopher-king, produced in Greek a Roman manual of piety, the Meditations, whose impact has been felt for ages since. Here, for our age, is his great work presented in its entirety, strongly introduced and freshly, elegantly translated by Gregory Hays for the Modern Library.”

steel for your spine
By DDW Reviews
One should have more than one translation for Meditations. Note this difference between Maxwell Staniforth's translation in 1964 (Penguin Classics) and Hay's 2002 translation in these two passages.
1964: When force of circumstance upsets your equanimity, lose no time in recovering your self-control, and do not remain out-of-tune longer than you can help. Habitual recurrence to the harmony will increase your mastery of it.
2002: When jarred, unavoidably, by circumstances, revert at once to yourself, and don't lose the rhythm more than you can help. You'll have a better grasp of the harmony if you keep going back to it.
-----------------
1964: Adapt yourself to the environment in which your life has been cast, and show true love to the fellow-mortals with whom destiny has surrounded you.
2002: The things ordained for you - teach yourself to be at one with those. And the people who share them with you - treat them with love. With real love.
------------------
The 1964 version is regal, while the 2002 (Hays') version is Aurelius writing, quickly, in a spiral notebook while on horseback, the equivalent of "memo to myself."
Reading this book is like taking a cold shower, or visiting a favorite bartender, who insists on serving you coffee, not drink. Hays has brought us a Marcus Aurelius who puts his hand on your shoulder, looks you in the eye, and tells you like it is: Get over yourself. You can't change the world. Do your best and realize you are of this earth. Human experience is muddy, so what? This book is best read in tough times, when you could use a little steel in your spine.

It's worth trying different translations
By davidhmorgan
I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:

This version:

Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.

George Long's version:

From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.

Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

a superlative translation
By garwood
Other reviewers here have commented about the work itself, so I would just add a note about this specific translation.

One of the most difficult tasks for a reader interested in non-English language work (and works from classical times in particular) is to choose an appropriate translation. Of course, what counts as `appropriate' is somewhat subjective.

What I was looking for was a translation that is clear and accurate; one that manages to convey something of a feeling for the both the person who wrote, and the times they wrote in. In this Staniforth excels.

Unlike say, the Benjamin Jowett translation of Plato which (at least to my ears) has a distinctly Victorian ring, or the popular new age paraphrases of many of the Stoics (and in truth they are paraphrases or adaptations rather than translations), to me Staniforth (whose translation dates from 1964) strikes just the right balance.

The words of Marcus Aurelius are rendered intelligibly and with a dignity and awareness of the historical context. The reader is neither forced to re-read and ponder (i.e., speculatively re-translate), nor wince at inappropriate colloquialisms of 21st century English. Better still, one can immediately perceive and appreciate the times in which the work was written. No mean accomplishment, to say the least.

Of course, each reader needs to make this judgment for themselves. Amazon provides an excellent (and free) way of doing this with its `search inside this book' feature, which is enormously useful for anyone making this decision.

England 1840 The bleak, wild, windswept coast of North Norfolk has, through the fabric of time, held many a secret, but none perhaps so strange as the one discovered by the young, tender-hearted vicar of Blakeney, Thomas Goodchild. Through tragedy and despair he is unwittingly drawn into the nefarious dealings of the local smuggling community. But what are they smuggling? What are the heart-wrenching sounds he hears emanating through the cellar walls of his house? Over a hundred and forty years later, a London-based journalist comes across an old journal among her deceased grandmother’s belongings. On reading the contents, she is both shocked and intrigued. She re-traces the steps of the journal back to Blakeney, where she finds to her astonishment that the events from the past could have far-reaching implications for her own identity – and for her safety. Sometimes, she begins to realize, myth is based upon truth.

By Mr Reinhardt M Viljoen
Wonderfully detailed storyline. Each character comes to life with unique personality a complex history behind them. Settings are described so well that one could almost smell the ocean. The time-jump was well done and in the final pages of the book, the story comes together with an exciting twist. If you like mermaids and tales about love, you will enjoy this book.
