5 Gold Stars, Top Pick from RT Book Reviews, 2015 RT Reviewers' Choice Winner (Best Inspirational Romance) and Seal of Excellence Winner (Dec 2015)
Love can't rewrite the pages of your past, but it can cover a multitude of sins-one page at a time.In 1953, desperation forces war widow, Eliza Saunderson, to take a job writing the memoir of ex-Hollywood heartthrob, Johnny Devine. Rumor has it Johnny can seduce anything in a skirt quicker than he can hail a cab. But now, the notorious womanizer claims he's born again. And so he seems to be. Eliza soon finds herself falling for the humble, grace-filled man John has become-a man who shows no sign of returning her feelings. No sign, that is, until she discovers something John never meant for her to see. When Eliza's articles on minority oppression land her on McCarthy's communist hit list, both John and Eliza become entangled in a HUAC investigation that threatens both John's book and Eliza's future. To clear her name, Eliza must solve a family mystery. She also needs to convince John that real love-not the Hollywood illusion-can cover a multitude of sins. But just when the hope of love becomes reality, a troubling discovery confirms Eliza's worst fears. Like the happy façade many Americans cling to, had it all been empty lies? Is there a love she can truly believe in? The Memoir of Johnny Devine is a dramatic story-within-a-story of a bad boy reformed and a good girl in need of reform. It's a powerful tale of love, redemption, intrigue, and the miracle of deliberate grace."Sharp, on-point writing immediately engages and makes it difficult to tear one's attention away from this emotionally riveting novel. The romantic tension sizzles nearly from the beginning, and readers will often find themselves breathless from the sheer delight of it."-RT Book Reviews, 5 Gold Stars, Top Pick2015"I love this story! The golden era of movies, a Clark Gable bad-boy turned good, and a woman with a broken heart learning to love again. A beautifully written story of redemption and second chances, this Hollywood romance is one that will leave you with hope. A fantastic weekend escape!"-Susie May WarrenRITA- and Christy Award-winning, best-selling author of the Christiansen Family series"Film noir and gripping romantic tension leap from the pages of The Memoir of Johnny Devine like a perfectly choreographed dance. Camille Eide's writing is poignant and lovely from the first page to the last."-Carla StewartAward-winning author of Stardust and A Flying Affair"Combining the romance of classic Hollywood, the intrigue of the Cold War era, and a stirring spiritual message, The Memoir of Johnny Devine is unforgettable. Eliza, John, and all the supporting characters are compelling, and Camille Eide's strong and evocative writing brings the story to life. A novel to savor."-Sarah SundinAward-winning author of Through Waters Deep"There is not a false beat in this engaging story. Eide has managed to create an intricate plot that flows effortlessly from one page to the next. Full of insight, intrigue, romance, and faith, The Memoir of Johnny Devine is so well constructed, it makes me want to go right back to the first page and read it again. Highly recommended!"-Cindy KelleyScreenwriter, co-author of Traces of Mercy and Finding Mercy"Camille has written another heartthrob of a novel, with an inspiring beat of true love, beauty, and grace. The Memoir of Johnny Devine takes us from the Golden Age of Hollywood through World War II and into the Red Scare of the early 1950s, as it weaves a story of both despair and redemption. It's a page-turner-literally a one-sitting story that I couldn't put down until the very last word!"-Leslie GouldChristy Award-winning and #1-bestselling author

A Story Worth Reading
By Jan Pierce
The Memoir of Johnny Devine is a wonderful read. Set in the early fifties in the middle of the McCarthy era, Eliza has endured an abusive marriage. She carries the guilt of experiencing relief when her husband dies in WWll. She's struggling to find work as a writer when she's hired to help a reclusive ex-Hollywood heartthrob write his memoir. He has quite a story. Eide's characters help carry the story from Millie, the elderly black maid, to Oscar, one of the best friends a man could have. Eliza's sister Betty represents everything Eliza doesn't want to be--a social climber motivated by peer pressure and the desire to impress. And John. There's no trusting a smooth-talking, leading man type. Who is this Johnny Devine? Themes of guilt vs. forgiveness, standing up to injustice, redemption and freedom to live a full, meaningful life make this story worth reading. Can people change? Does the truth set people free? There is no doubt Eliza wants the truth but what does she have to risk to find it? This is a great read with lots of highs and lows, twists and turns and a very satisfying outcome.

Another amazing story by Writer Camille Eide
By Baseball Rocks!
Another amazing story by Writer Camille Eide.
The story takes you into the 1950's. You are introduced to a Hollywood heartthrob Johnny and a good girl Eliza (if you are a romantic like me, you'll love the sparks and tension build up from the beginning). Camille's writing makes it easy to draw you in and experience the joy, pain, longing and every emotion the characters are feeling. Is as if you were in the story along with the characters. You also will be rewarded with reminders of God's love, forgiveness and Grace.
Ready for another work of this great storyteller.

Great message of hope
By B. Burnham
5-stars is what I give The Memoir of Johnny Devine! I suppose this book could be termed an historical romance, but it is definitely so much more. With glimpses into the life of old Hollywood, a 1950s setting full of the unease of the McCarthy investigations, a woman living with disappointment and betrayal and an unlikely messenger of hope, Camille Eide has written a thought-provoking and touching novel I can Highly Recommend.

Retired film star Johnny Devine is writing his memoir. Instead of a tell-all from the notorious playboy of Hollywood, John wants to impart a message of hope to his readers. Eliza Saunderson, disillusioned and alone is hired to help whip the manuscript into a coherent whole. The two form an unlikely partnership and perhaps a second chance at a new life.

The Memoir of Johnny Devine has many strengths. The novel has a strong sense of time and place and revealed an America I have paid little attention to. World War II is in the past, but the threat of communism seems all too real. Mistrust, betrayal and fear were very real emotions for those who came under the magnifying glass of the House Un-American Activities Committee. The Hollywood studio system and race relations are also examined. Eide’s characters are also strongly written — no stereotypes here. Eliza is a woman moved by the injustices she sees among women and minorities. John’s former life haunts him despite His relationship with God. Their relationship develops slowly and realistically, and the reader cannot help but hope that their differences can be overcome. Perhaps the strongest element of the novel is its message of hope. God’s grace and forgiveness in the face of extreme shame and guilt is beautifully exemplified in John’s changed life. And that change makes its mark on Eliza. She learns that God’s call to submit never means a surrender to oppression.

An unusual love story filled with God’s grace and mercy, The Memoir of Johnny Devine is perfect for readers looking for a fresh and unique voice.

Highly Recommended.

Audience: adults.

What a fantastic last book!
By C.C. Pen
Umm wow I'm still reeling from the conclusion to the undraland saga.
I've been eagerly reading each installment as fast as they are published since the very beginning when the author traded me a copy for an honest review. I can't thank her enough for introducing me to Lucy and her band of misfits as they have adventures, heartaches and discover they are all stronger than they ever thought possible they bring out the best in each other .

This book starts where the last one ends with Linus coming back to life! What what amazing finally Lucy is reunited with her other half and it's an emotional reunion cue the tearswell god now that she has Linus back everything can end right?
No of course not she still has to break the laplanding bond with Prince Jamie, dethrone his family so he can take his rightful place as king of the Tomtens, and lift the curse on Foss's people. All in a day's work for Lucy Kincaid.
Alright so that being said if your anything like me this series has been an emotional roller coaster. So many lives have been lost, there has been betrayal and so much heartache, but also love and kindness. So this book is a killer as far as that goes.
Without giving much away because frankly so much happens it's crazy and it has to be read but I will say one of the hardest things is Lucy must finally say true goodbye to Foss. We all knew it was coming and to say they are a dysfunctional pair is putting it mildly, and though they are divorced on the other side we have seen the sparks fly repeatedly. So when they must travel to Fossegrim and be husband and wife once again it's a challenge for them all. Foss is a complicated man when he lets his many walls down your heart just melts but he will also make you so angry you want to do him physical harm as he reverts in one to many ways to the man I loathed. Finally the goodbye is necessary and we can only hope that Foss will find a perfect match down the road, it really was a perfect goodbye.
We get to know Linus and realize how much Lucy was suffering without him and how complete she is just by having him back, I love Linus he is a fantastic big brother and After everything Lucy deserved to get that part of her soul back.
Jens will have you smiling from ear to ear as he grows up so much in this book. He gives Lucy the freedom she needs but he is her rock and he holds her heart so gently but with a fierce protectiveness that I can't help but love.
Jamie and Britta get everything they need and deserve and even Tucker whom was not my favorite to start with redeems himself 10@ times over.
Mary I salute you in your wonderful conclusion to the gang I have come to
Love so much. Thank you for sharing this journey with your readers. I will miss them but they all got what they needed to move on.

I couldn't help but conclude with one of my favorite scenes

"Jens didn’t let go, but hugged Foss until it looked almost painful. When he finally spoke, it was through gritted teeth and laced with masculine emotion that choked me. “I promise you right now that I won’t touch a drop of lavender powder for the rest of my life. I know how much you love her, and I swear to you I’ll keep her safe. Every day, I’ll try harder to be good for her so you never have to worry if she’s still alive.” He closed his eyes. “I’ll guard your treasure with my life, brother.” It took Jens’s stubbornness in not letting go for Foss to finally wrap his left arm around Jens, closing his eyes as he gave in to the brotherhood he’d tried so hard not to need. “Then I won’t stand in your way anymore.”

From the Inside Flap
PEOPLE WERE DYING ALL around Polly, including Lenora, the only friend she'd ever known. The presence of Lenora's three-year-old daughter, Edwina, made it all the worse.
A quarter of an hour ago, the view of the landscape from the passenger car was charming. Snow blanketed the evergreens, hills, and barren maples. The sky was a brilliant blue, and the sun shone bright.
But after the passenger car tipped on its side, just as they set off from the train station, the scene quickly turned horrific. Several feet away, the locomotive was buried in a deep snowdrift, engine smoke spiraling toward the sky. The attached passenger car lay on its side. Glinting in the sunlight, broken glass and metal debris were scattered about the snow.
The victims of the crash populated the area just beyond the rail line. The sounds of death swarmed around her. The weeping of a bereaved mother, a lifeless son in her arms. The shouts of a desperate husband, begging for help with his bloodied wife. The moans of pain from Lenora as she struggled to breathe, holding the small hand of a bewildered Edwina.
Tears burned her eyes as she watched mother and daughter.
Lenora had been thrown from the passenger car into the snow. Her friend's legs were broken, and she guessed there must be some internal injury. For not a minute ago, Lenora coughed blood.
"I'm not going to make it, Polly," her friend rasped.
Desperation knotted her stomach. She wanted to do something for her friend. But there seemed no way to slow the waiting specter of death. There were no bleeding wounds to staunch. No healing medicines to administer. She forced a smile. "Help is coming from the station. We'll get you to a hospital quick."
Eyes glimmering with love, Lenora dusted snow from Edwina's coat. "We're blessed we weren't going too fast, or Edwina and you might have been hurt too."
Edwina wrinkled her nose. "Ma, I'm cold."
Wind gusted from the east, stinging her skin. She glanced up. Pewter clouds were travelling toward them. Snow was gonna start falling soon.
Edwina visibly shivered. Polly unwound her scarf from her neck and wrapped it around the little girl. Edwina had lost her scarf and cap during the crash.
Lenora touched her arm. "Thank you, Polly. For everything. What would I've done without you after I became a widow?"
Emotion clogged her throat. "Don't talk like you're gonna go soon."
Lenora swallowed a sob and, with great effort, hugged her daughter. Over Edwina's head, her friend said, "Will you take care of her? I got a letter from Mrs. Lamb that I didn't read until we got on the train. She can't give either of us a position."
Her stomach clenched. After Lenora's good-for-nothing husband got shot during a card game, debtors had descended on Lenora. In the end, Lenora lost everything--the fashionable house, fancy wardrobe, glittering jewels, the household servants.
Only she, Lenora's personal maid, had stayed on. There'd been no choice. After she'd been expelled from the orphanage at eighteen, only Lenora giving her a job kept her from starving on the streets. Blessing had seemed to come when Mrs. Lamb, Lenora's old school friend, offered them positions at her husband's factory in Augusta. They'd gotten ready to leave right away. And Lenora had spent most of her remaining funds on train tickets to Augusta.
The disappointment at losing that opportunity was nothing to the fear in Lenora's eyes.
"Polly, there in my reticule. There's a pencil and paper. Write out that I'm giving you care of Edwina, and I'll sign it. We can ask someone to be our witness. I want everything right and legal before..."
"Before what?" Edwina asked.
She held back words of protest. She sensed Lenora didn't have long either. As she dug through Lenora's reticule, sorrow weighed upon her heart.
"I love you, Edwina," she heard Lenora say.
"Love you," Edwina answered.
And then the snow fell.

Mail-Order Bride: Treasuring Polly: A Christmas Novelette (Overcoming Brides) Kindle Edition
by April Jensen (Author)

What a sweet book!
I bought it this afternoon….and finished it completely in less than two hours. It was just so engaging I couldn’t put it down!

Polly, orphaned herself at 3, finds herself raising the orphaned little girl of her best friend tragically killed in a train wreck. Down on her luck: no job, no money and a child to raise Polly shows up on the doorstep of Archie—a pen pal of sorts—and offers herself up as a bride. Archie is taken off guard. He wasn’t expecting a bride much less a child. However, the way God brings this new little family together is awesome to “watch”.

Reading this book was a great way to spend my afternoon. Thanks April Jensen! Loved it!

By E. Lopez
Left at an orphanage when she was 3, Polly accepts the care for her friends 3-year old when her friend dies from injuries received in a train accident. The jobs they were both on their way to fall through, and Polly decides to go immediately to see Archie, the man she's been corresponding with, rather than waiting, especially since she's close to being completely broke. Needless to say he isn't expecting to see her and definitely isn't expecting to see little orphaned Edwina with her. Watching the way God works His grace in their lives and in Archie's mother's life will keep you turning the pages. I was given a free copy for an honest review. I honestly very much enjoyed this delightful short Christmas novella. I plan to read more by thus talented author.

EXTENDING GRACE TO OTHERS
By Redrabbitt
I loved this inspirational mail-order bride story that has heartache, acceptance, trust, faith and forgiveness. Polly has had a hard life, placed in an orphanage at the age of three by her mother and kicked out at eighteen. A train trip that turns tragic changed her life even more when her friend loses her life and leaves Polly to raise three-year-old, Edwina. Archie and Polly had been exchanging letters, what happens when she shows up in Montana with a child? How will his mother accept Polly and Edwina? The plot kept me captivated and the pages turning of this quick read novella. It has charming characters, emotional dialog and heartwarming moments.

On Heaven and Earth: Pope Francis on Faith, Family, and the Church in the Twenty-First Century, by Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Abraham Skorka

New York Times Bestseller!

From the man who became Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio shares his thoughts on religion, reason, and the challenges the world faces in the 21st century with Abraham Skorka, a rabbi and biophysicist.

For years Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Argentina, and Rabbi Abraham Skorka were tenacious promoters of interreligious dialogues on faith and reason. They both sought to build bridges among Catholicism, Judaism, and the world at large. On Heaven and Earth, originally published in Argentina in 2010, brings together a series of these conversations where both men talked about various theological and worldly issues, including God, fundamentalism, atheism, abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, and globalization. From these personal and accessible talks comes a first-hand view of the man who would become pope to 1.2 billion Catholics around the world in March 2013.

Review
This remarkable book wonderfully demonstrates the warm and positive relationship Pope Francis has developed with Jews and Judaism. These honest and respectful exchanges between then-Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio and Argentinian Rabbi Abraham Skorka on a wide range of sensitive and complex topics - God, religion, fundamentalism, politics, and the Holocaust - is a model not only for Jews and Catholics but for all those seeking productive interfaith dialogue in helping to repair a broken world. -- Rabbi Eric J. Greenberg, Director, Department of Interfaith Affairs Anti-Defamation League

Whether or not they agree with everything that is said, readers of all religious backgrounds will be impressed by the substance and frankness of these conversations between Cardinal Bergolio and Rabbi Skorka. They clearly enact the call of the Second Vatican Council for "fraternal dialogues"  between Catholics and Jews. This is how religious leaders should speak to one another: on the basis of sincere friendship and respect.  This book will also encourage anyone who wondered if a pope from a non-European country could be personally committed to the Catholic Church's new relationship with Jews. --Philip A. Cunningham, Ph.D., Professor of Theology and Director of the Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations, Saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia

About the Author
JORGE MARIO BERGOGLIO, POPE FRANCIS, is the first Latin American to be elected to the chair of Peter. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was ordained as a priest in 1969. Following the resignation of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, February 28, 2013, the conclave elected Bergoglio, who chose the papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. He is the first pope to be a Jesuit, to come from the Americas, and to come from the Southern Hemisphere.

1. ON  GOD

SKORKA: It has been many years since we first met and a brotherly bond has been forged between us.  While studying the books of the Talmud, I found one that says that friendship means sharing meals and spending time together, but in  the  end it points out that the sign of a real friendship is the ability to reveal what is in one's heart to the other person. That is what happened over time with the two of us. I believe that undoubtedly the most important thing that brought us together was, and still is, G-d, who caused our paths to cross and allowed us to open our hearts to each other. Although we broached many topics during our regular conversations, we never spoke explicitly about G-d. Of course, it was always understood that He was present. It would be good to start this exchange, which we plan to leave as a testimony of our dialogue, by  discussing Him who is so important in our lives.

BERGOGLIO: What a great word: path!   In   my personal experience with God   I cannot do without the path. I would say that one encounters God walking, moving, seeking Him and allowing oneself to be sought by Him. They are two paths that meet. On one hand, there is our path that seeks Him, driven by that instinct that flows from the heart; and after, when we have encountered each other, we realize that He was the one who had been searching for us from the start. The initial religious experience is that of walking: walk to the land that I am going to give you.  It  is  a promise that God  makes to Abraham. In that promise, in this, in this walking, an alliance is established that consolidates over   time. Because of this I say that my experience with God takes place along the path, both in the search and in allowing myself to be sought, even if it may be by diverse paths-of pain, of joy, of light, or of darkness.

SKORKA: What you have said reminds me of a few biblical verses. For example, when G-d tells Abraham: "Walk in my presence and be blameless?' Or when the prophet Micah needed to explain to the Israelites what G-d wanted from them, and he tells them to "do  justice and to  love  goodness, and to walk humbly with your G-d?'

Without a doubt, experiencing G-d  is  dynamic,  to use a word that we  learn in  our mutual study of basic science. However, what do  you  think we  can say  to people nowadays when we  find  the idea of G-d  to be so  mangled, profaned and diminished in importance?

BERGOGLIO: What every person must be told is to look inside himself. Distraction is an interior fracture. It will never lead the person to encounter himself for it impedes him from looking into the mirror of his heart. Collecting oneself is the beginning. That is where the dialogue begins. At times, one believes He has the only answer, but that's not the case. I would tell  the people of today to seek the  experience of entering into the intimacy of their hearts, to know the experience, the face of God. That is why I love what Job says after his difficult experience and the dialogues that did  not help him in  any way: "By  hearsay I had heard of you,  but now my  eye has seen you?' What I tell people is not to know God  only by hearing. The Living God  is He  that you  may see with your eyes within your heart.

SKORKA: The Book of Job teaches us a great lesson because-in short-it says that we  can never know how G-d   reveals Himself in specific circumstances. Job,  a just, upright man, wanted to know why he had lost everything, even his health. His  friends told  him that G-d  had punished him for  his sins. He  responds by  saying that even if he had sinned, he had not been that bad. Job  is comforted only when G-d  appears  to him. His   questions are not answered, but the touch of G-d's presence stays with him. We can find several things in this story that shape my  personal perception of G-d. First, Job's friends show themselves to  be  arrogant and nonsensical by  espousing the theory that "You  have sinned, therefore G-d  has punished you," transforming G-d   into some  sort of  computer that calculates reward or  punishment. At  the end of  the story, G-d  tells Job-who  had railed so  much against the injustices of his Creator-that he should intercede and pray for   his friends, because they had spoken falsely about Him. Those who had cried out in suffering, demanding heavenly justice, were pleasing in G-d's eyes. Those who insisted on a simplistic view of G-d's nature were detested by  Him. As I  understand it,  G-d  reveals Himself to  us subtly. Our current suffering might be  an answer for   others in the future. Or,  perhaps we  ourselves are the response to  some thing from the past. In  Judaism, G-d  is honored by our compliance with the precepts that he revealed. As you  mentioned, each person and each generation must find the path on  which they can search for  and feel  His  presence.

BERGOGLIO: Exactly. We  receive creation in  our  hands as a gift. God  gives it to us,  but at the same time He gives us a task: that we subdue the Earth. This is the first form of non-culture: what man receives, the raw material that ought to  be  subdued to  make culture like  the log  that is  transformed into a table. But there is a moment in which man goes too far  in this task; he gets overly zealous and loses respect for  nature. Then ecological problems arise, like global warming, which are new forms of non-culture. The work of man before God  and before himself must maintain a constant bal ance between the  gift  and the task. When man keeps the gift  alone and does not do  the  work, he does not complete his   mission and remains primitive; when man becomes overly zealous with his work, he forgets about the gift,  creating a constructivist ethic: he thinks that everything is the fruit of his labor and that there is no gift. It is what I call  the Babel syndrome.

SKORKA: In  rabbinic literature, there is a question as to why G-d  did  not like the Tower of Babel. Why did he halt construction by making people speak different languages? In reading the text, the simplest explanation is that the attempt to build a tower reaching Heaven was part of a pagan religion. The act was an expression of arrogance toward g-d. The Midrash states that what really bothered g-d was that the  builders were more concerned about losing a single brick than with losing a  man who might fall  from such a  great height. The same thing happens now-there  is  a  tension between the  gift and the  work. There needs to be a perfect equilibrium because man needs to progress so that he  can become more human. Even though g-d is the  one who planted and created everything, man is the  focus of the  material world and the  greatest divine work. The way we  are living today, the  only thing that matters is  the  success of  our economic system, and what is least important is the  well-being of mankind.

BERGOGLIO: what you  have said is brilliant. The Babel syndrome is  not  only a  constructivist posture, but  there is also the  appearance of a confusion of languages. That is typical of situations in  which there is an exaggeration of the  mission, ignoring the  gift,  be- cause in  that case pure constructivism carries with it the  lack of dialogue that at  the  same time entails aggression, misinformation, and annoyance . . . when one reads Maimonides14 and Saint Thomas of Aquinas, two   nearly contemporary philosophers, we   see   that they always start by putting themselves in the  position of their adversary in  order to  understand them; they dialogue from the  standpoint of the  other.

SKORKA: according  to  the   Talmudic interpretation, nimrod was a  Babylonian dictator who held a tight grip on  everything, and that is  why the  people spoke only one language-his. This tyrant ordered the construction of a tower that would reach Heaven in order  to leave his  mark, and thus, presumed rather arrogantly to  be  physically closer to  g-d. The point of building was not  to benefit mankind. The betterment of people's lives held no  importance. By building only for themselves while using one despotic language and not   a  universal one, each person was punished by being made to speak a language that no one else  could understand. This is a very important story and it is always incredibly relevant.

First Pope Francis Book in English
By Nick Zinos
I received this book in the mail yesterday and I am almost finished with it. It is a series of conversations between then-Cardinal Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and a Rabbi of the area named Abraham Skorka. They discuss frankly and respectfully many different topics including Interreligious Dialogue, the Holocaust, Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, Nationalism, and many more. However, the theme that seems to be a constant in the book is an honest evaluation of religious leaders and institutions in general, with each author often times pointing out how those who speak in the name of God can be more of a hindrance than a help to true religion. It is certainly a call for purification of religious sensibilities among all believers, but especially among the pastors of the flock.

I am a Catholic, and I must admit that the only reason I purchased this book was to learn more about the personality and opinions of our new Pope. I even started the book by skipping over all of Skorka's comments, just to focus on Pope Francis' words. But occasionally I would glance at Skorka's comments and I began to realize that they were fascinating and profound in their own right. His knowledge of Talmudic lore or Jewish folk stories (such as the story of the Golem of Prague) was extremely interesting. For someone not well versed in Jewish theology, it was a delight to learn more about this religion. It is evident from these conversations that Judaism can enrich Christian thought and vice-versa.

I recommend this book as a good introduction to the personality of Pope Francis, but also as a fascinating encounter between two of the great world religions. It failed to achieve the full five-star rating because although it is a good book, it is not a great book. It is casual in tone, with each author sometimes getting slightly off topic, and does not always delve as deep as one would like into the issues. However, these flaws are not unusual among this genre of writing.

Wonderful introduction to Pope Francis!
By Lorraine V. Murray
There is so much misinformation circulating about what Pope Francis believes on various hot-button issues, and this book lets you find the truth easily, since each chapter covers a different topic. The book is a dialogue between him and a Rabbi, so it is fascinating to see all the points of agreement between the two men, and, of course, the areas where their beliefs diverge. They discuss the devil, the reality of sin and other theological topics, along with social issues such as feminism, homosexuality, the importance of the traditional family, and many others. A good read!

#3 on my list of books to read by/about Pope Francis
By Stuart Dunn
On Heaven and Earth is a book of dialogue between Pope Francis (then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio) and Rabbi Abraham Skorka. Both men are Argentinian and both are respected religious leaders as well as brilliant minds. In these conversations, which read like brief letters back and forth to one another, various subjects such as God, the Devil, Science, Education, are covered. My initial impression was that it was nice to see subjects other than religion covered. This has potential to attract a wider, perhaps secular audience, who would otherwise never read a book by the Pope.

Each chapter reads like a friendly debate (for lack of a better word). One man gives his and his religion's viewpoint on a specific subject, and the other replies with their viewpoint. The tone is never harsh, and you can tell that these men have a good deal of respect for each other. If you are looking for fireworks or one party to declare the other wrong, you need to find a different book. I must admit there are times when I wish Pope Francis would have told Rabbi Skorka that he was wrong, but that is not how dialogue, especially religious dialogue works. Both men exhibited what a religious dialogue is supposed to look like - loving, respectful, willing to listen, and willing to share.

Some chapters were more appealing to me than others. For example, the first chapter, "On God," was very interesting. I'm not sure what exactly I expected them to discuss as it related to God, but Rabbi Skorka's explanation of Nimrod and the Tower of Babel, according to Talmudic tradition, was very interesting and a perspective I had never heard before. The chapter "On the 1970s" had a hard time keeping my interest because I wasn't alive during that time. The beautiful thing about this book though is that you don't have to read it in order or completely if a chapter doesn't interest you.

I originally thought that this book wouldn't hold my interest as I tend to only want to know what the Catholic viewpoint is on things, but I was very wrong. It was very well put together, covered a wide variety of topics, and I felt that both men educated me, not just Pope Francis. I give it 5 out of 5 stars and recommend that you read through each section slowly and reflect on each one. I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

Had me hooked from the start!
By Mrs. L
Running on Empty kept me turning pages from the very beginning! Throughout the book, CJ weaves together the storylines of several characters from seemingly different walks of life. The book opens with the main character, Del, struggling to make ends meet after losing her job through no fault of her own. With unsympathetic landlords hounding her for late rent, a growling stomach, and a gas gauge on empty, Del needs to figure out something fast. But that night, young Callie shows up on her doorstep, claiming to be her sister. Del soon realizes that their only hope is to find their mother, the one she never knew, before it’s too late. But she’s running on empty…and desperate.

I truly enjoyed the other books in this series (though each one can be a standalone) and found this one to be CJ’s best yet. I loved the elements of suspense and mystery scattered throughout, which is why I found the book extremely hard to put down! I also liked the theme of God answering prayers and the hope He offers.

CJ didn’t spare any punches with this book. This book is masterfully crafted and is sure to be a favorite!

Good story
By Carol P.
How scary it must be to find yourself young, alone, without money and without a job. That's where Del finds herself as we begin her story. It quickly becomes even more complicated when she finds out the people who raised her were not her biological parents as she always thought. Then just as she begins to process that, an eight year old girl shows up claiming to be her sister.
Running on Empty follows Del as she struggles to keep her and her sister fed and warm while the world around her throws her more curveballs.

I found this book interesting to read, but hard to relate to. I had no trouble relating to the characters, but the plot was a little to far fetched to me. I would have liked it to be a little more believable. It was well written with good suspense and just the right amount of humor. I also enjoyed that it was clean.

expect a good novel!
By lighthouse88
C. J. Darlington just keeps getting better! I have read her other books Jupiter Winds, Thicker than Blood, Bound by Guilt, Ties that Bind and her newest Running on Empty. Each novel contains a story that will stir your blood, set your imagination running, and leave you wanting more of her stories. Running on Empty seems like a great candidate for a sequel because I would love to see how a couple of the characters meet with justice!
The main characters are two half-sisters Delaware and California, who have nicknames Del and Callie. These two go through a whole maze of danger, trouble, reprieve and more as they are just trying to live day by day. Del is the oldest and has lost her job. She has been black-balled due to a lie people in the small town where she lives believe. One night in the wee hours Del opens her front door to find a dog and Callie.
There are those who are cunning, don’t value life and right now think they have gotten away with more than just murder. Del is on the fence with her faith, having learned a truth withheld from her till the death of her parents that has skewered her view of God. Callie believes in Jesus and has a childlike faith and a heart filled with love. At times in the story when Del would be hesitant to tell the truth because trust comes hard for her, Callie spills it like water which more than once cause Del to wince.
The ending of the book was classic. The tale has mystery, danger, adventure, and themes of trust, brokenness, regret, and hope. That isn’t all the book has to offer, but hours of enjoyment will help you glean what is held in this great story. C. J. Darlington writes some of the most interesting stories I have come across. The characters can be related to, seem real and before one knows it have the reader cheerleading for the good guys!
I hope you read all the books this author takes time to write and share with anyone who loves reading. These books can be read over and over again and each time the story will still be fresh, leaving the reader wanting more! I hope C. J. is already working on her next book whether it is the Thicker than Blood Series or the sequel to Jupiter Winds or perhaps something totally different. Either way I am sure to devour it as I have her others, so join me on the road to some great books!

Embracing Grief: Leaning Into Loss to Find Life, by Alise Chaffins

For most of her life, Alise Chaffins had only a casual relationship with grief. From 2013 to 2014, however, grief went from an occasional passerby to an intimate companion. Her mother was diagnosed with ALS and in 11 short months, it took her life. She left the man she had been married to for nearly sixteen years amid the scandal of an affair. She remarried, got pregnant at a time when her mother was gravely ill, and experienced the stillbirth of her son at 35 weeks and 4 days. Her 16 year old came out as a transgender man. She and her husband were finally settling into a congregation and were suddenly asked to leave their church for supporting that same transgender child. In the course of just over a year, she experienced one calamity after another, each resulting in a deep, but unique grief.

In Embracing Grief, Alise examines the various ways that her life has been impacted by grief and how she has learned to lean into her sadness and find a more full life.

If you've experienced heartbreak, you will want this book
By K. Haring
This book helped me personally to embrace my grief in a new way. I believe our society is so lacking in knowing how to deal with grief, and I have struggled with the vulnerability necessary to grieve well. It took courage for Alise to write this book, and I believe this book can help us all find the courage to face our grief and get past our shame.

“Grief helps us find our humanity.”
By Lisa DeLay
“Grief helps us find our humanity.” That was my favorite quote from the book. For anyone that is struggling with loss or pain or finding it hard to know how to help someone who is, Embracing Grief help you navigate that path by learning, firstly, to be a better listener. Alice Chaffins is honest about her mistakes and open and authentic about the terrible string of struggles that came one after another in a heartbreaking course of a about a two year period. This book is worth the read. Alise was a guest on my podcast Spark My Muse Episode 39 (on iTunes and at sparkmymuse.com) to discuss the book's concepts and I'm glad she brought this important topic out for us to understand better.

Jottings from a Far Away Place, by Brendan Connell

Ranging on the fringes of imagination and erudition, forming a mosaic of stories, maxims and sketches, at once fragmentary and cumulative, Jottings from a Far Away Place combines the timeless, mannered assurance of the Eastern discursive essay with the experimentation of the Western avant-garde. As the focus shifts between fantastic tales and studies of viciousness, the reader is treated to, among myriad other things, the adventures of a Taoist guitar player, a bloody episode with Countess de Báthory, a recipe for cinnabar sauce, and the story of a man who has been reincarnated as a spoon. A book that is like a collection of bulletins from the world of dreams.

An outstanding achievement in experimental storytelling!
By "Seregil of Rhiminee"
Brendan Connell's Jottings from a Far Away Place made a huge impression on me. I loved it and found myself totally mesmerised by its contents.

Jottings from a Far Away Place is one of the most original short story collections I've read during the recent years, because it's boldly different from other short story collections. It's brilliantly witty entertainment to readers who dare to read something different and who are fascinated by absurd and surreal happenings. In my opinion, it's an outstanding achievement in experimental storytelling.

Brendan Connell has never disappointed me with his fiction, because he always writes good prose and surprises his readers with extraordinary tales. He examines many things through a skewed lens and his output is fascinatingly bizarre and captivating. His stories are imaginative and intriguingly twisted, and some of them can be interpreted in different ways depending on the reader. This short story collection is a marvellous example of his writing skills and endless imagination.

Jottings from a Far Away Place is an enjoyable collection of short stories that defy easy classification. In this collection, literary fiction meets speculative fiction with interesting results.

This short story collection contains the following stories:

- Observations
- Habitually Dancing
- Showing the World
- Entrusting
- A Ramshackle Village
- Ghost Cave
- Gradual Activity
- Uncommon
- Defilements
- Gesture of Bowing
- Many-Coloured Eyebrows
- Entities
- Maladjustment
- Nothing to Hide
- Slow Amulets
- Irreversibility
- Emerging from a Trance
- Treasures
- Wild Ducks
- Tissues and Banners
- Constant Principle
- Holding Up the Sky
- Red Dalmatics
- Bewilderment
- Sacred Contours
- Giggling Flutes
- Worn-Out Straw Sandals
- Generating Worlds

If you have read Brendan Connell's previous short story collection and novels, you'll find bits and pieces of his trademarks in these stories (those who have read Brendan Connell know that he has a fascinating way of infusing his stories with elements associated with absurdism, surrealism, decadence, body horror, viciousness and whimsiness).

This short story collection has an interesting and unique structure. It is slightly similar to the structure of Metrophilias (Better Non Sequitur, 2010), but is far more complex and intricate. The stories are fragmentary and they have been divided into numbered sub-sections that consist of a few sentences or several paragraphs. Each of the sub-sections feels different from its neighbouring companions, but some of them are linked to each other and have a few themes in common.

It's possible that reading this short story collection may feel a bit strange, but when you think of what you've read and how the different pieces connect to each other, you'll notice how brilliant a work of fiction it truly is and how extraordinarily well it has been written. It offers plenty of food for thoughts and leaves you wondering about many things. If you're like me and enjoy reading books that don't fit into the neat and tidy cookie-cutter mold that most books are made of, this collection will please you very much.

I personally call this book a collection of small pieces. It's like a puzzle that awaits to be solved. Each of the pieces is different and the contents of the pieces vary a lot. The pieces are either poems, parables, lists, mini-stories or longer stories.

The bizarre, thoughtful and vividly written pieces form a unique narrative structure, because they seem to be unrelated to each other, but actually all of them are connected to each other in a complex way. Certain characters and themes appear in different stories. The author spices up the pieces with fantastical and vicious elements.

When you begin to read this collection, the different stories and their sub-sections may seem baffling and it may be difficult to fathom their meaning, but please, be patient, because this is not your normal kind of a collection. In normal collections, you'll know immediately what's going on, because many of them are easy to read, but in this collection you have to let the author guide you through different scenarios and happenings to comprehend certain things. I can guarantee that this collection is an extremely rewarding reading experience when you give it an opportunity to amaze you.

This may sound a bit odd, but in my opinion, the different pieces form a kind of a literary symphony. This collection has a beautiful rhythm that flows throughout the whole book and dramatically changes its power at various points. To find this rhythm, you need to pay attention to small details and different happenings or you'll miss it.

As the synopsis states, this book "is like a collection of bulletins from the world of dreams." This summarises its contents in one sentence, because the stories feel like glimpses into a dream world or another state of reality. The author pulls all the right strings to create an atmosphere that exudes dream-like strangeness and otherness.

It's slightly difficult to describe some of the stories to readers due to their experimental nature, but here are a few words about some of the stories, so that readers will get a taste of what's in store for them when they begin to read this collection:

"Observations" is a fantastical and well written story about the adventures of Alan Li Po, who is a singing Taoist guitar player. This story contains an interesting reference to Hank Williams.

"A Ramshackle Village" is a story about an emperor who sacrifices people. This story is a fine example of the author's ability to shock and thrill his readers with vicious happenings.

"Defilements" contains an interesting sub-section about two holy men, Madhusudan and Vishvatma. Visthvatma offers to carry a woman across water, but Madhusudan feels differently about the situation and his opinions about the woman and what will happen to Vishvatma are amusing.

"Emerging from a Trance" is one of the most memorable stories in this collection. The ending of this story is a fascinating account of a man who reincarnates as a spoon. The author's approach to reincarnation and rebirth feels fresh.

"Giggling Flutes" contains vivid imagery, because the author tells of Andy and his life in a stunning way.

"Generating Worlds" is a blood-filled story about Countess de Báthory and what kind of morbid things she does to avoid a few wrinkles. This macabre short story is a perfectly written piece of different kind of horror fiction.

Brendan Connell's prose is beautiful and excellent. There's something intriguingly poetic and lyrical about his prose and sentences that impresses me. He has an uncanny way of evoking the reader's yearning to immerse himself into the stories. In my opinion, he has a unique literary voice that beckons to be explored by readers.

There's charmingly funny and witty humour in some of the stories. I admire the author's ability to write about odd happenings with a touch of humour. Readers who have read The Metanatural Adventures of Dr. Black (PS Publishing, 2014) and Cannibals of West Papua (Zagawa, 2015) will be delighted with the author's way of adding humour to these stories. I especially enjoyed all the hidden humorous elements, because they made me chuckle when I read the stories.

I'm not sure if other readers will agree with me on this, but I've noticed a few similarities between Brendan Connell and Rhys Hughes. When I read this collection, I was slightly reminded of certain short stories by Rhys Hughes. In my opinion, both authors share a few similarities in terms of absurd, surreal and thoughtful stories.

Some of the sentences in this collection can be used as excellent quotes. They're so thoughtful and full of meaning that many of them resemble aphorisms.

Jottings from a Far Away Place is not for readers who read books in haste and don't pay attention to details. It's a book for readers who enjoy intelligent stories and fully immerse themselves into them. Avoiding any kind of distractions is recommended when reading this book, because distractions may affect your reading experience and cause you to miss out on something precious. I personally read this collection while listening to classical baroque music.

Brendan Connell has developed quite a lot as an author and has polished his writing skills. He has been an excellent author from the start of his writing career, but now he seems to be even more capable of creating unique reading experiences than ever before. One of the reasons why I like his fiction so much is that he dares to write experimental stories and trusts that his readers are intelligent enough to think for themselves without pointing out all the obvious things.

I give this collection full five stars on the scale from one to five stars, because I was impressed by it. I sincerely hope that readers will find it, because it's different and unique in the best possible way.

Brendan Connell's Jottings from a Far Away Place may not be to everyone's liking, but if you are openminded and dare to venture outside your literary comfort zone, you'll be pleasantly surprised by it. It showcases Brendan Connell's writing at its most experimental and inventive. It's a rewarding and memorable reading experience that can be enjoyed many times. Please, let this collection seduce you and lead you into a world where anything can happen.

Highly recommended!

More than any previous collection, Jottings from a Far Away Place shows the wonderfully absurd imagination and incisive wit of Brendan Connell. Though the reader will find fragments of the body-oriented horror which left a distinctive mark upon previous collections, such as Metrophilias and Unpleasant Tales, Jottings tends far more toward the curiously exotic and whimsically playful. Connell, after all, stated in a recent interview that he would have a hard time writing anything as dark as the sublimely disturbing stories found in Unpleasant Tales; to those who found "The Maker of Fine Instruments" and "The Putrimaniac" to be marvels of contemporary dark fiction, Connell's diversion from the overtly decadent grotesqueness of his earlier works could be somewhat disappointing. However, if you've always enjoyed Connell's more humorous side--think "The Tongue" from Unpleasant Tales--Jottings shows the author further exploring certain tendencies that have always been in his work.

Besides this general turn from the often morbid character of previous collections, the structure of this new work will, perhaps, be even more disarming. Instead of writing exclusively stand-alone stories, Connell has divided the content into individually titled sections which are further divided into numbered sub-sections; these sub-sections range from single sentences to short stories. So, structurally, the book is even more singular than Metrophilias--a book which had simply taken a different geographical location to both divide and unify each of the pieces. Nevertheless, for its strangely fragmentary nature, Jottings retains a certain degree of coherence which is detectable after reading a few of these sections. From section to section, Connell sometimes lists categories of things--happy things, annoying things, etc.--and sometimes he stretches a single story over a few, non-consecutive sections to create a spontaneous though episodic movement. In this way, the reader could compare the other contents of these overlapping sections and watch certain thematic continuities emerge. I won't get into any detail on these comparisons, as this is, at least in part, up to the reader's own experience of the book.

While I can hardly elaborate on the many seeming non sequiturs and lateral one-liners which flood this book, I'll share some thoughts on the two finest longer stories I've found in here. In the section, "Showing the World," there's an excellent story about an aristocrat's castle which mysteriously duplicates its architecture across the region. Connell precisely renders the aristocrat's anxiety regarding the matter and paves the way to the majestically ridiculous "solution" to this singular problem. And though this story is highly enjoyable simply on its own terms, it also encapsulates the lengths to which certain members of elite society will go in order to ensure the authenticity and exclusivity of their possessions.

The other of these longer stories I most enjoyed--and which spans several, non-consecutive sections as I mentioned before--involves two eastern Indian holy men: one being a stark and solemn ascetic, while the other is a plump, gregarious lover of life. Again, Connell's precise rendering of detail perfectly defines these characters in few words and gives a lucid understanding of the conflict between how the ascetic's practices grow increasingly austere from his envy for the renown his fellow believer has attained in spite of his pleasure-seeking nature. As this tension reaches its near-climax, Connell unfurls a very satisfying conclusion with a bit of paradoxical wisdom.

With its greater emphasis on Connell's absurdist sensibility, his often Rabelaisian wit, and an equally ethereal and infernal imagination, Jottings from a Far Away Place shows the author to be a continually evolving dreamer and thinker. The one constant in his work is, of course, an immaculate prose style capable of endearing you to the strange and defamiliarizing the ordinary. Still, I reserve my five stars for his incontestable masterpiece in miniature, Metrophilias.

So now I will end with what I found to be a few of the book's most quotable lines:

"Words aren't precious, but nothing is."

"Jacques de Plomb loved to hear the sound of his own voice. So did others. A thousand pines stood and listened."

"When Bernasconi was told to hold his tongue, he took it wildly in his arms and kissed it with liberal passion."

"Relics were manufactured wholesale from the bones of dogs and pigs and sold for healthy profits."

"Fish can't be drowned, ashes can't be burnt. Completely used up, no one can use you."
