Another Great Story from One of the Masters

Everyone of us has one – a favorite writer. Someone whose creative works we run out and buy whenever something new comes along. Many of us (me included!) also seem to add any new edition of this writer’s previous works to our collection. And we do this because this writer never fails to deliver pulse-pounding excitement, heart-rending terror, or whatever floats our personal boat.

For me, one of my favorite creators is Walter Simonson; his creative runs on Marvel Star Wars, Thor, Fantastic Four, X-Factor, Orion, Elric: The Making of a Sorcerer and many other titles turning me into a lifelong fan of comics. So, whenever I spot his famous signature on the cover of a comic, I always view it as a gift from a true master of the medium, and when I saw Ragnarok with the “Simonson” below a dead dude with a hammer, I immediately got excited!

Could it be true? Was this perhaps a Thor story? Okay, not a Marvel Thor story obviously, but Walter Simonson creating a whole new Norse inspired story? I couldn’t believe it. It seemed damn impossible luck. I had to read this book as quickly as possible.

Immediately, the story sucked me in. Ragnarok playing out before my eyes. The end of the world. The final confrontation between the Norse gods and their enemies. Thor standing proudly before the Midgard Serpent. And then it was all gone . . .

Oh, didn’t I mention that Ragnarok is the beginning of this tale? Oops, sorry. But it is. The end of the world is just the beginning here; the start of a renewal of the cosmos. The world transforming into a familiar but different place. One thing remaining constant however: foul trickery and devious cleverness; these seemingly universal traits leading to the real story of Ragnarok.

The tale begins with a dark elf assassin finding herself caught up in a plot to destroy a being imprisoned at the edge of the world. Her quest not one to her personal liking but forced upon her out of love for her child and a deal with a capricious god-ling. Yet she is an elf of her word, and she would see her mission completed, no matter the personal costs.

Once she confronts the object of her quest yet another clever trap is sprung. One which was planned and put into place by a long dead god; one who wished to cheat the fates and, perhaps, undo Ragnarok itself!

The avatar of this dead gods’ plan is a long dead corpse. Someone who finds himself animated but confronted by the reality that all he knew is gone. Everyone he loved is ashes. He himself is merely a shadow of what he once was. And he has no idea why he has been resurrected from the halls of the dead. Any plan which was put in place kept a secret from him as well as everyone else.

All the thrills, mysteries, brawls, and daring-do spiral out from this set up. The narrative seamlessly shifting from Norse mythology to earth-shattering fights to tender moments of personal grief. One never overpowering the other, but complementing each other. And I found myself ensorcelled by it all, racing along with these characters and events until the wee hours of the dawn.

Honestly, I don’t get excited about many things. I’ve gotten too damn old for much to impress me, I guess. Or made I’ve lost my inner kid. Who the hell really knows.

The simple fact is that few things get my pulse-pounding and wake up that teen boy who dreamed of soaring through the skies holding a magic hammer, but this story by Walter Simonson did. It captured all the amazing Thor mythos and took it in a whole new direction, promising so much more to come.

Mystery. Combat. Emotions. Ragnarok has it all! And you should go get it now, because great stories like this only come around once a lifetime . . . well, maybe, three or four times, but who really wants to but a limit on greatness.

As the dust of Ragnarök settles, a lone figure arises: Thor!!

This is Walt Simonson's exploration of what happens to Thor (the mythological god, not the Marvel superhero) after the battle of Ragnarök. It reminded me of why I enjoy comics; bombastic action, fantastical worlds and characters. Ragnarök embraces the medium, and lacks the cynical- bordering on self-loathing, tone of many modern day comic-books. The colors by Laura Martin are superb (as usual!).

Five Stars for Walter Simonson's Ragnarok...Just as good as Thor and Orion runs

Walt Simonson does it again with Ragnarok The Last God Standing. His knowledge of mythology is second to none. After his runs on Thor and Orion of the New Gods, his work is just as intense as ever. I got the opportunity to meet Walt and his wife, Louise Simonson at the Mohegan Sun Comics Con earlier this year. I have to say that he was real nice in guy and he autographed all my books. I even got Louise's autograph on my Death of Superman omnibus. But I digress, the story in this epic is there and in true Walter Simonson tradition, he will not disappoint you if you like his work. Ever since he drew those Man Hunter comics in the 50 cent DC Hundred Page Comics back in 1972, I've been a fan and will continue to be a fan ever since.

Excellent book to learn on the concepts of Buddhism

This is an excellent book to learn on the concepts of Buddhism. I am not new to Buddhism as my colleague practices this, but this book gives me more understanding on its amazing ways. Everything is clearly and briefly explained in this book. Therefore, if you are seeking improvement to your life, try the Buddhism concept and principles. This book will guide you through. This is highly recommended to everyone who wants to learn the concept.

A journey into yourself

One of my older sisters introduced me into de Buddhism culture, she is a believer and she practices meditation and several exercises of that culture. I, particularly, have liked some aspects of that culture since I read “Siddhartha” by Hermann Hesse and discovered a whole world really different from the one I knew. Then, I bought this book, luckily at a great discount price, because I wanted to learn a bit more about that fascinating culture and, I have to say that it is a very complete one. It has a lot of information and “lessons” that will help you clear your mind and body from bad energies, and free yourself from sufferings.
I do think that, if you let yourself go, you are going to really have new positive experiences that, perhaps, can make you a more open-minded and free person, looking to find the desired happiness at every moment of your life.

Great read, very useful book!

I am not new to Buddhism as my colleague practices this, but this book gives me more understanding on its amazing ways. Everything is clearly and briefly explained in this book. Therefore, if you are seeking improvement to your life, try the Buddhism concept and principles. This book will guide you through. It is really refreshing to learn new things everyday. I may not share the same views as a Buddhist would but I value their views and opinions as it should be for everyone. I don't judge no one as it is a free world to worship who ever you choose. How ever after reading this book I can definitely say I have grasp alot from here. I appreciate the fact that I have gotten the chance to explore another religion and I must say it was thoroughly explained by the author.

I loved this book

I read first 44 fairy tales that was translated by Dr Kunus himslef, than I read the other book Turkish fairy tales, also written By Dr. Kunos, but translated to English by Nesbit Bain. The same tales, but different translation. In that book, Nesbit added 4 Romanian tales, that although praising the Lord and not Alla and with Christian names for the characters, was very similar to legends in the book 44 turkish Fairy tales.
I loved this book, and as living in the Levant, made me understand more our Muslim neighbors.
Bless be the people who thought about publishing those books now, more than 100 years after it was first published

Pogany color plates lacking

This is a beautifully produced book. The entire series of reprints by this publisher seems to be a wonderful labor of love. The only caveat about this particular title is that the 16 color plates by Willy Pogany [probably the main reason collectors look for this book] are NOT reproduced in this edition. The description in the product listing stating the color illustrations are reprinted is evidently in error, or perhaps referring to some other edition, as this one only includes most of the b & w illos but none of the color ones. Still, for the price, it is a nicely done book. I guess I'll have to shell out the big bucks for the original edition after all.

About the Author

Amy Parker has written and co-written more than forty books for children, teens, and adults, with more than a million copies sold. She has collaborated with authors ranging from New York Times bestsellers to her very own son. MUST READ!

What I love most about ‘The Plans I Have For You’ journal and ‘The Plans I Have For You’90 day devotional is the fact you can show your children that God has a plan for you, no matter how hard life may seem now, he has a plan for you. I am almost 30 and I still struggle with this, lol. My kids have been through a lot, my oldest, Hailey has been through a lot for someone who is almost 12 years old. But I reminder her daily that she is loved and that God is always there for you.

Finding Christian devotional books for teens and pre-teens is hard work. I found this book and it was perfect. TheI illustrations in this book and journal is simply amazing! I turned this 90 day devotion into a 6 day thing. So we could get through the book faster and because it was just THAT GOOD!

The journal is super cute. There are a few things like re-writing the verse, doodles, questions, it’s a real hands on and really great for pre-teens. Hailey loves it. We might of made the 90 day devotional a 6 day thing, but we didn’t do that with the journal. Overall, both of these books are heaven sent.

Help your child to find their spiritual path!

Have your kids ever said that they wondered what plan God had for them? I know growing up I had this question go through my mind. This book is a great way to start a conversation with your child or let them start their own journey with finding that path for themselves. The book provides step-by-step processes over 90 days to help kids in this way. There are amazing illustrations and what is being shared was easy to understand for my pre-teen and it really opened a dialogue between us too.

The Plans I Have For You Devotional and The Plans I Have For You Journal are two books from the author and illustrator of The Plans I Have For You. The books are all written by Amy Parker and illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton.

The Plans I Have For You Devotional is a hardcover book with full-color, coated pages. It is divided into 6 "sectors" with 15 devotions in each sector (for a total of 90 devotions).

In the devotional, there are some illustrations and wording from the original book, but there is plenty of variety to warrant owning both.

There is some overlap between the devotional and the journal - making them great as companion pieces. There is enough variety between that devotional and the journal that owning both would be good.

One of the ways this devotional is different from others I have seen is that there is a large variation in the length of the individual devotions. Some devotions are extremely short (as short as just 4 lines of text) and some are longer (up to 6 paragraphs). Many of the devotions are 1 to 3 paragraphs long.

The Plans I Have For You Devotional is unique and there is variety in the styles of the devotions, making it interesting for the reader.

The Plans I Have For You Journal is a paperback book with grayscale paper pages. It is divided into 6 "sectors".

This is not just a typical lined journal. The pages are illustrated (grayscale) and have a variety of verses and prompts. (And it's not all writing. There are places for drawing, too.)

Generally there is a two page spread featuring a verse and one or more related journaling prompts. It encourages reflection, writing, and doodling. The prompts are good and thought-provoking. There is a good amount of space to write without feeling overwhelming - good probably for ages 8-12 (maybe even up to 14). There are some illustrations and wording from the original book, but there is plenty of variety to warrant owning both.

Again, there is some overlap between the devotional and the journal - making them great as companion pieces. There is enough variety between that devotional and the journal that owning both would be good.

The Plans I Have For You Journal is unique and there is variety in the styles of the journaling pages, making it fun for the user.

This is an inspiring daily read. Ronnie McBrayer has a wonderful way of telling stories that mix in universal truths and wisdom. Each story is inspiring as well as enlightening. You don't even have to be a Christian to appreciate the messages. Each story is very short (a page or two) and you may be tempted to ready it all at once like a book but I prefer to savoir each chapter as a daily reflection.

Good story - loved the main character

I received this book so I could give it an honest review and help spread the word. I was very intrigued with the book because I have a huge soft spot for fairy tales and Greek mythology. (No spoilers in this review)
I did like the plot line of the story. You have a beauty (Alara) with a huge secret that could destroy the world and falls for a Beast (Lycaon). But what made me like the story more is that he stayed a beast and she still loved him. She loved him for his heart and not his looks.
The story had a lot of twist and turns but it fell flat at the end for me. It seemed to be rushed and the author wasn’t sure which way she was going to go with the story. I thought the book was going to end several times but it seemed to drag at the end. Do not get me wrong I loved the story but this is my only real critic about the book. There are some intimate scenes in the book that are ok, I felt that it didn’t need to be a part of the books, but hey to each there own.
Alara is a head strong girl who only wanted to return to her homeland and get away from her betrothed Aramon. While she runs back to her home, she runs into Lycaon and his band of warriors. Alara struggles with her feelings for Lycaon but as fates decide it they have a connection that keeps bringing them together. She makes some decisions that keep bringing her in danger but she never backs down.
Lycaon is a pain in the neck. You love him and you hate him. He makes some really really dump decisions that made me want to punch him in the face, but what can I say he is a man and I will leave it at that. The more I read the book, the more I began to love him as a character.
If you love Greek mythology and a twist on a Beauty and Beast then you will love this book. I laughed, cried and got angry at times with the book, but I will definitely be reading this book again.

Good Reading

Connected by secrets and curses, two worlds collide and the last thing they expect to find is love but it may be the very thing that saves them all.

Set during the Bronze Age, The Wolf Queen is a fantasy romance with a heavy dose of the paranormal. Ms Heckart cleverly weaves in a lot of background history throughout the tale.

Alara is a princess from a foreign land, soon to be wed to a sorcerer king. However, she realizes that her betrothed knows a big secret about her tribe that he plans to use for his evil purposes. So she flees to the one person who can help her, Lycaon. A former king, he’s cursed to roam the earth in his half human, half wolf form.

Alara has a kind heart and a strong will but she’s also a strong fighter. She knows herself. And she knows when to retreat and when to fight.

With every day she spent with Lycaon she learns more and more about him and about the secrets long hidden. This was a surprising book. Honestly I wasn’t sure I’d like it this much, let alone finish it in one sitting.

Though this is the second book in the series and even though I haven’t read the first book in the series, I can safely say that it can be read as a stand alone. The plot was very good. Detailed. But not so much so as to be too much. It was descriptive and deep.

The characters, good and bad, were well developed. I could almost see them in my mind’s eye every time.

Alara and Lycaon had passion and a lot of it. Their relationship was not easy but their love was strong. I know it’s a little corny saying that but it’s the only way I could describe it without revealing too much.

A read any paranormal reader could love and one I highly recommend.

This book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest Review

This was an amazing story full of twist and turns. Kelley Heckart is an incredible author and I found myself lost in the story from the start. Alara was a feisty and proud woman who bowed to no one, and Lycaon was a fierce and noble person hell bent to protect her at any cost. I fell in love with the characters and the story right away. Heckart writes with an artistic beauty and grace that captures the imagination and grabs the soul.

I love all stories about battles and stories about gods and goddesses. This book has it all! the sorcerer-king Aramon was a great and fierce enemy and I couldn't ask for a better villain! He never gave up and he never gave quarter. He was ruthless and deadly and had no remorse. He was the perfect villain. Lycaon was much like him but in the Hero aspect, He grieved deeply for his men each time they were lost and went after Aramon all the more ruthlessly. He loved Alara so much that the thought of her in pain pained him so much that he ripped men to pieces. Both were deadly one cared too much the other not enough.

Heckart did a smashing job on this and the love story within holds you and wouldn't let go. It is passionate and deep and sinks its claws in and marks you for its own. I love shifter stories and this one is one of the most interesting one I have read to date, there is magic , intrigue, mystery, and a whole lot of chance. Don't find yourselves missing out, go get your copy today!

almost, but not quite

It is interesting that what all the Amazon reviews to date have ignored or missed is Berman's deep foundation in a psychoanalytically informed understanding of ontogenesis (especially the very earliest developmental era). Berman, though no psychoanalyst, does know a good deal of the literature (Winnicott, Balint, Kohut, Klein, Barrett) but not quite enough about the clinical aspects of the discipline itself. (For example, he seems unaware of Paul Gray's work, an approach I see as a crucial addendum to the psychodynamic literature that Berman does know about.) He has much to say, and reading him carefully, slowly (a la Nietzsche's "slow reader"), thoughtfully, and via a series of circling converging passes through the work will repay the effort. I've scanned his "Wandering God," intend to study it, and it seems a more mature summing up of his position.

Incidentally, in this book I recommend especially chapter 1, a thorough introduction to ontogenesis, and chapter 10, a highly interesting and comprehensive analysis of two classes of creativity.

Although he has much to say (about Western insanity--for example, about the "psychotherapeutic use" of pets [p. 90]--a minor but telling example!), I think he's off the mark and misleads his readers by predicating his analyses on the mind-head vs body-experience polarity. I don't think the very important split to which he refers is well characterized in that way. (It so happens this split is a topic that interests me greatly---my new book [The unboundaried self] which should be out in 2-3 months focuses on this issue in a somewhat different way.)

Nevertheless, I think his work is just about the best in the vast subject area he has selected; there is approximately a decade between each of the three trilogy books, and his maturational path and progress are evident. All three works merit reading, as I have indicated, as does his "The twilight of American culture" which seems very much on the mark. He writes from a cultural historian's perspective about much of what I've written about from my renegate psychoanalyst's orientation.

The body cannot be divorced from mind

Morris Berman makes accessible the fusion of phenomenology, existentialism, and somatology which has been developing over the 20th Century. My own guides to this synthesis, which refuses to let the dual embodied first/third-person viewpoint remain outside intellectual consideration, are Paul Shepard (whose books have been reissued), Berman (whose earlier titles have been reissued), and Thomas Hanna. Berman's trilogy (The Reenchantment of the World, Coming to Our Senses, and Wandering God) may be the most explicit statement of his own formulation of the fusion, but his other cultural critiques such as Twilight of American Culture, written from the same dual first/third-person perspective, also provide insights into his formulation. If you find Coming to Our Senses skull-shattering, don't give up -- extend your reach to his other books. And perhaps read a smaller bit of Berman at a time. Slowly, in small bites. Like the biscuit labeled "eat me" in Alice -- it will take you wonderful places.

Three Tales That Will Leave You Wanting More

One of the first things I notice, as a reader, is whether or not I'm in good hands, with the writer. It's a combination of confidence and voice, the way the author strings words together to tell a story. A writer like Stephen King or Neil Gaiman, you know almost immediately that you are in the good hands of a storyteller.

The same can be said of Christopher Valin and his three-short story collection "Tres Puercos: And Other Dark Tales". Without giving too much away, the first tale is a criminal (and human) take on The Three Little Pigs, with the wolf reimagined as, if not the hero, certainly the antihero of the story. This Wolf is out to push back at Los Puercos, a nasty group of men who have run almost everyone out of the old neighborhood, including the wolf's own mother, and made it their criminal playground.

This does not sit well with the Wolf, no angel himself, and he decides to go pound on some doors...

The second tale, "Tom Petty Sucks", reveals the downside of one man being a vampire is, in fact, its upside... emphasis on the "up," when you're a vampire that suffers from acrophobia.

The third tale, "Wake", is absolutely ripe to be expanded into a full-blown novel: a man with the ability to move through other people's dreams, and their nightmares, struggles to hang on to his sanity.

All three tales move at a fast clip. And you'll want more from each one, when you're done.

Three fun & slightly dark short stories

Tres Puercos and Other Dark Tales is a collection of three short stories. The first and longest is "Tres Puercos," a twist on the story of the Three Little Pigs. But when the story is set in the middle of a modern gang, is the wolf really the bad one here?

"Tom Petty Sucks" is the second story, and is a fun little tale about a vampire...who just happens to be afraid of heights. Ending the collection is a story about a man who battles the nightmares of others. While "Wake" is probably the shortest story of the bunch, it's actually the darkest one.

While I expected a little more horror from the title of the book, the first two tales bring more humor into the darkness. This isn't a bad thing, however, and I found that I enjoyed all three of these stories.

Great, Short Read

The other day I was given the opportunity to receive an ARC copy of Christopher J. Valin’s book called Tres Puercos: And Other Dark Tales. I went to Amazon to read what it was about and it sounded pretty interesting, so I preordered it as well.

Tres Puercos is a collection of three short stories by Valin. The book description says:

From award-winning writer Christopher J. Valin comes this darkly comedic twist on a classic fairy tale. While the Wolf may have been big and bad, was he really the villain? Or was there a lot more to the story?

Plus two additional short stories: “Tom Petty Sucks”, the tale of a vampire who’s afraid of heights; and “Wake”, the story of a man who battles the nightmares of others.

The collection starts out with Tres Puercos and is told from the point of view of the wolf. This version of the three little pigs, to me, seemed to be set in the present time. The wolf is telling us what really happened, hoping to change your opinion of him. This story is pretty entertaining and at the end I found myself wishing it was longer. I could easily see this novella or novel size. Did he change my opinion on the wolf? No. If the story was longer could he? Possibly. Overall it was a fun story to read.

Next is the story Tom Petty Sucks. I can’t tell you too much of this story because it is so short and if I do I could giveaway what happens. This story takes around five minutes to read. The story is about a guy who is becoming a vampire and is afraid of heights. Again, I think this could be a fun novella or novel.

Finally is Wake. This is another story that is really short and I cannot say much about it without giving anything away. I think this story is a pretty cool concept and I could see this turned into a series.

Each of these stories are short and because of their length I did not become connected to any character. The story lines are great and made me want to keep turning the pages.

Overall this collection is a fun read and I really enjoyed it. The whole thing will take you thirty minutes or less to read, I am a slow reader and it probably took me thirty minutes to read. This is definitely a collection I will read again when I am in the mood for a quick read.

I hope that Valin will come back and revisit these stories and maybe expand upon them. I especially think that Wake could turn into a really cool series. There is so much back story that could be explored and what could happen in the future.

I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Valin and what other stories he might give us. I hope that you will go and pick this up when it is released on December 15, 2015. You can preorder it here.

About the Author
Will Russell is the husband of one and the father of four (so far).  He has a B.A. in Music Education which naturally led to a career in cross-cultural ministry. He and his wife met at Beautiful Feet Boot Camp, while training to be a missionary. He has lived in rural settings in West Africa since 2002, building his young family along the way as he builds friendships with and serves families of the unreached people group with whom he lives. He and his family now reside nestled between the neighborhood well and the wilderness in the sauna of his tin roof house.

Such an encouraging book and great testimony. It is simply a book full of true stories as they happened - whether they ended in a miracle, or some awkwardness, or a question mark, or the person feeling loved and cared for. I was given a pre-release copy to help with final edits, then found myself wanting to emulate Will's simple acts of walking in faith. And not a huge, high faith that WE can do miracles, but simply a faith that GOD still acts, that He wants to act in people around us, and that He will do it even through frail, wavering people like us. The simplicity, humility, joy, and real-life perspective of this book are what make it gold, and it truly reflects the character of the author. I hope it will spur you on to also be looking for the kingdom of God coming into others' lives, and to step out as Jesus leads to make it a reality.

Inspiration spelled out

This book is truly inspiring and motivating. It is easy to read and the truths the author and family have lived stick with you. I knew both the author and his wife some years ago, before and after they first married. To see by his words how they have grown in grace is so wonderful. It is a wonderful read.

I finished reading Will's book a few weeks ago and was so encouraged by his story.
Why did it encourage me? Here’s a few reasons....
1. His determination and courage (especially not to be bound by how his own tradition or others define God and how to serve him)
2. The open ended nature of his writing and life.
3. Apparent failure and its positive impact on him and others.
4. His willingness to embrace uncertainty.
5. The growing generosity of his vision of God and others.
6. The gentle but highly significant role of his wife, Gloria.
7. His desire to involve the kids....and God’s pleasure at involving them.
All rather cryptic but you may get some clues.
I loved so many bits but I laughed out loud at the bit about “Blessed are the stinky heads” and identified with that!
But probably it was the overall amazing sense of God being at work at levels and in areas many of us don’t even think about.
