"As a busy mom who also works part-time outside the home, I am always on the lookout for any tips that will help with productivity, time management, and focus.  As with most books in the genre,  I began Claire Diaz-Ortiz’s Design Your Day simultaneously excited for a new “a-aha!” moment, and skeptical that the book would only contain the same old re-hashed ideas.  I’m happy to say that the book delivers new concepts, and reinforces why brainstorming and other efforts that can seem like time sinks are necessary.

Diaz-Ortiz spends much time addressing goal setting (including realistic and relevant goals), and an action plan for determining where one should focus his/her efforts based on priorities, core competencies and enjoyment.  The book also contains many helpful time tracking, goal setting, and other productivity resources.

Before I start, two things about me:

One, I might be the biggest procrastinator in the entire universe.

Two, I am not the biggest fan of self-help books, however, I have found them necessary in the last few months.

While I am still struggling to reach the seventh chapter of Antoni De Melo’s Call To Love (which might be due to a poor translation) and yes, I am still putting Joe Barry’s Panic Away Program to the test, I successfully tackled Design Your Day within a day (pun not intended, if it is, in fact, a pun).

ATTENTION UNIVERSE: Mrs. Diaz-Ortiz deserves all the awards for this book.

When I stumbled onto this book on NetGalley, I KNEW that I had to read it. I felt like it was written for me.

Now, let me tell you a couple of reasons why I needed Design Your Day in my life, and therefore you need it in yours.

First off, the writing. Mrs. Diaz-Ortiz has a one of a kind gift. She has the ability to explain complicated mechanisms with ease and wit which not only makes a usually-slow-moving-genre book interesting, it makes you excited to read the rest. It inspires you to try what it suggests.

I started this book at six in the morning (thanks to my cat) with the intention to power through it, wondering if a rainy Saturday morning is the best timing for a self-help book. But I ended up finishing it in four hours AND I already had my WORD OF THE YEAR, as well as a brainstorming session. That’s how inspiring it is.

Second off, the theories and techniques Mrs. Diaz-Ortiz suggests. While it all sounds complicated and hard to achieve after reading the introduction, once you actually start reading, you’ll see how simple it all is. Some day-to-day things we do can make a difference in your productivity.

"I received this book just as I was about to start my annual process of setting goals for next year. I have been going about that task somewhat haphazardly in the past, but this book offers some very pragmatic ideas for setting those goals and breaking them down into achievable portions. This is instrumental in actually accomplishing those goals. In addition, the author offered some great insight into organizing a workday in order to be more productive and waste less time. Very practical guide for anyone with busy days or who might want to take a good look at what they want to accomplish."

Strategy for doing our best

Days get away from us. “Days shouldn't live themselves, and this is a book about making sure they don't,” the author writes.

Her strategy is her Do Less Method. It is a productivity and goal setting model designed to get more done in less time and succeed more often. The book is in two parts. The first part concentrates on deciding what is important and what we really want. The second part is about organizing. It includes productivity strategies to reach SMART goals and includes the four steps of limit, edit, streamline, stop. (Decide, Organize, Limit, Edit, Streamline, Stop – DO LESS)

I liked her idea of brainstorming and free writing to get as many ideas as possible. We are to welcome unusual ones and withhold criticism. Then ideas are combined and improved upon, then structured into SMART goals. She suggests creating goals for the major areas of life: God/Faith, Family, Health, Personal, Work, Money.

But having goals is only half the process. She suggests we limit ourselves to work our best 20 percent. She helps us understand how to identify those activities. Next she suggests we edit the time we spend at work, like establishing specific work hours, and taking time off. She suggests we schedule our day and gives several strategies for doing our best work at our most productive times. She also helps us know when to stop working, that is, when to stop trying.

I really appreciated this book. It is a good book for anyone wanting to get more done in less time. The idea is not to work more but to work smarter. This might take some experimentation to find our best times and places for work. But the reward is getting more done with time left over.

This is a good introductory level book on living life more effectively. People who have read many productivity books may not find much new here. Diaz-Ortiz includes many ideas from other authors too. I've read many productivity books yet I was inspired again to write and review goals and plan my day better. She includes a good bibliography for those who would like to read more.

Diaz-Ortiz says her goal is, “...discovering why God put me on this earth at this particular time and place and then doing that thing He wants me to do.” If you have a similar goal, this book will get you well along the path.

Design Your Day

"Design Your Day" is a good read for anyone, regardless of background, who wants to be more productive in their lives so that you can focus on what is really important to you. A brief read, the book is around 120 pages and covers topics such as:

1. Suggestions for brainstorming, freewriting (writing down whatever comes to mind), and listing goals.
2. Make sure your goals are relevant to the season of life you're currently in - a very good point, looking back, I see how my goals and priorities have changed over the years.
3. Suggestions for implementing the 80/20 principle into your life.
4. Suggestions for working fewer hours and actually being more productive - I really liked her comment that some employees waste a lot of time at work by putting in face time while not being productive. To that I say "amen" - work fewer hours, be more productive, and have more time for other things (family, friends, hobbies, serving in the community, etc.).
5. Morning people usually get more done and have a better life.
6. Doing the hardest things first helps you avoid decision fatigue (being drained by the energy required to make the countless decisions we make every day).
7. Depending on the situation, sometimes you have to push through a task and sometimes you need to take a break.
8. The importance of taking mini breaks, a weekend off, or a full vacation away from work - have done this and noticed the positive results.

While for some readers there may not be anything new or earth-shattering, it helps to be reminded of basic principles of productivity. Will use this as a future reference. Good read.

I am a huge fan of productivity books. I love reading about how others organize their lives and learning new tips and tricks. I recently had the chance to review the book Design Your Day: Be More Productive, Set Better Goals, and Live Life On Purpose by Claire Diaz-Ortiz. This book is all about productivity and organizing. It is jam packed with information that will help ANYONE.

Claire Diaz-Ortiz has made quite a name for herself in the online world. Wired magazine called her, “The Woman Who Got the Pope on Twitter.” Forbes magazine called her a, “Force for Good.” She is also the author of several books (which I will link below). She is the cofounder of Hope Runs, which is an organization that operates AIDS orphanages in Kenya. As you can see, Claire, is super busy! If anyone can give good advice about productivity it’s her. She is also a Christian and her book reflects that, which I really enjoyed.

Design Your Day is broken up into two different parts: Decide and Organize (Less is More). The first part of the book is all about deciding what exactly you should be working on. You learn how to set goals, pick a “word” of the year, and create strategies to reach your goals. The second part is jammed pack full of tips in order to increase your productivity and get rid of anything that doesn’t move you towards your goals.

I really enjoyed this book and it gave me lots of new tips to increase my productivity. However, nothing in this book was rocket science and several of the ideas I’ve heard many times before. The chapters also weren’t organized in the best way. It sort of jumped all over the place and the author would go off on random tangents sometimes.

If you are looking for ways to improve your productivity and haven’t read that many books on it, I would definitely recommend this book. If you are a productivity book junky like me though, you probably can pass on reading this one.

This book was both very interesting and fun. When reading the book it gets you sucked in and you feel like you are truly apart of the story. It feels like you are there and you can image the whole story played out right before you. It is worth reading and we loved it ,so great of a story and we hope for more books by this author! :)

The author struck gold with this clever plot!

I really enjoyed the first “Cornelius”. I thought it was excellent, but I just LOVE “Revenge of Cornelius”! I highly recommend this book. The author brings everything together from the past to the present and even with a hint of the future. And that spooky house features again! Any questions in the reader’s mind about what’s happened since the first book in this “Cornelius Saga” are quickly answered, but subtly. It’s humorous in parts, tear-jerking in others. Very descriptive and the “otherworldly” aspect of the tale keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. The original characters from “Cornelius” are now older than before, but even more appealing. And it was great to have some new characters introduced. They led the story in a new direction. I loved the endearing little Rosie right from the beginning. Everything ties in cleverly and leaves the reader satisfied at the conclusion. The author struck gold when she came up with the clever plot that is woven throughout the first “Cornelius” and into “Revenge of Cornelius”. I am sure this book will be as popular or even more popular than Cornelius (if that is at all possible!). The more books that Tanya R. Taylor writes, the more her writing is developing in an amazing way.

Emotionally stunning paranormal

Review of REVENGE OF CORNELIUS by Tanya R. Taylor

Now this author rocks. I read CORNELIUS last evening, and immediately followed it with the sequel, REVENGE OF CORNELIUS, today. Hmmhmmhmm. Tanya Taylor knows how to elicit readers' emotions and make our heartstrings both thrum like a harp and weep bitter tears. Following the first book, in which a yearning ghost from slavery times appears to a young girl, asking for help to find her missing love, the ghost's killer reawakens to brutally haunt and terrorize a young black family who have purchased and renovated his long-abandoned plantation house. I found my emotional range stretched in multiple directions by these two books, which I might even classify as paranormal women's literature. [better yet, good human literature!]

A Gripping Tapestry of Terror, Love, and Healing

Tanya, gripped my attention with this book, a five star supernatural suspense story. Once again I love the healthy family dynamics, social racial issues, spiritually weak personality traits in need of healing and challenged by evil, selfishness, pride, and revenge all weaved into a gripping story. Personal loss and love are as well weaved into a wonderful reading tapestry. You did it Tanya Taylor. I must now read Cornelious!

Wonderful!

A captivating read from start to finish. Mary Ann was the heir of her grandfathers million dollar estate. But her greedy brother bribed the authorities and forced her to leave under the guise of being a mail order bride. But he had a far more sinister scheme in mind and what seemed like a harmless situation turned out to be life threatening. This is where she met her love. A gang member whose brother was the leader. As the love of Christ was at work in her he struggled with the turmoil of conviction leading him to Christ. Then a second man came on the scene who held the same beliefs as Mary Ann leaving her to chose who her man would be

A clean novel and riveting read,

It seemed almost impossible to believe what happened to this young woman - packaged off like that at the start of the book. But somehow that wasn't a distraction. The author grabbed my attention and kept it!
The characters were well-crafted and drwe me in to their lives. At times I wondered how the author was going to extricate her heroine, or change a situation... but it was never out of her control. An enjoyable read, although it seemed a bit 'far-fetched' at times - but then I didn't like then, so it might not have been.
It was 'wrapped up' very satisfyingly at the end.
I would recommend this book

E.M. Bounds wrote 9 books, 7 of which were on the subject of prayer. My spiritual grandfather, Leonard Ravenhill, said of this book when he got it, "I purposed to go through this book at once. But I didn't do that. This book went through me!" Power Through Prayer is power-packed with sketches of the lives of some great men of prayer throughout the centuries. It is by far my most recommended book on the subject of prayer. Buy extra copies for all your friends, as well as any ministers you know. It'll bless their socks off!

A Dose of Prayer Motivation, Inspiration, and Passion

There are many good resources on the subject of prayer; however, once you've understood the basics, I've discovered the greatest way to learn to pray is simply to pray. "Power Through Prayer" is packed with inspiration and motivation to get you started and to keep you praying. Bounds' primary target is the minister of the Gospel. His aim is sure and his words will certainly penetrate any sincere but prayerless preacher's heart. E.M. Bounds was a tireless man of prayer, whose words ring with authenticity, passion, and conviction. I have the entire series of Bounds' eight short books on the subject of prayer. "Power Through Prayer" is by far my favorite and a book I regularly go back to when my own prayer life is losing its fire. For a dose of prayer motivation, inspiration, and passion there is no better book than this classic 128-page work, "Power Through Prayer."

While Bounds has written a classic on how important prayer is for the pastor, the layperson can also learn much about prayer.
Among the important points covered include:

I am crazy about children's book illustrations and The Little Mermaid is my absolute favorite fairy tale. This book has some of the most amazing illustrations and is truly spectacular. I loved the story about Hans Christian Andersen as well. What a real treasure!

Read this story just after visiting the new disney world magic kingdom little mermaid ride. Hate souveniers, never manage to keep them but wanted something to mark this visit. Feels as though this ebook, though not physically purchased at the park though bought during the visit there, has the essence of a true souvenier that will always be there in cyberspace for me. Many Beautiful illustrations.

About the Author
Bob was born into a morally upright Canadian middle class family residing in the suburbs outside of Toronto, Ontario. Upon his rather dramatic conversion to the Christian faith, he quickly fell deeply in love with God, and unequivocally committed his life to Jesus. In his passion to live ‘the narrow path’, God prompted him to disciple in a number of youth groups, pastor four congregations, administrate and teach in a Bible College setting and aid the impoverished in several different countries as a missionary.

Not a self-help book, but a self-examination book!

If you profess to be a Christian, this book will challenge you to examine whether or not you are truly living like a Christian, or if you have blended into the secular culture around you. For me, this was a very slow read, simply because each chapter is so convicting, I had to give a lot of thought to my habits, character, and spiritual walk every few paragraphs. Bob Cowan is "the real deal". I know him personally, and he truly "walks the talk" daily. This is not a Bible study or self-help book. It is a book of reflections along the journey of becoming more Christ-like while surrounded by a very unChrist-like culture. I love Bob's vision of the Christian's walk - living a Biblical culture within a secular world.
