Twilight Land, by Howard Pyle

Howard Pyle had many admirers among his contemporaries, including Vincent Van Gogh, who once said that Pyle’s work “struck me dumb with admiration.” Considering the famous painter was talking about artwork, the extent of Pyle’s ability and quality was clear.  In addition to teaching illustration courses at Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry, Pyle put his talents to use, primarily illustrating children’s books. He is best remembered today for his work on The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, which remains in print, and he also did a four-volume set of King Arthur tales. Though he also wrote his own novels, he continued to be in popular demand for illustrations, and he was employed by periodicals like Harper’s Weekly.

THE STOOL OF FORTUNE

Once upon a time there came a soldier marching  along the road, kicking up a little cloud of dust at each step--as strapping and merry and bright-eyed a fellow as you would wish to see on a summer day. Tramp! tramp! tramp! he marched, whistling as he jogged along, though he carried a heavy musket over his shoulder and though the sun shone hot and strong and there was never a tree in sight to give him a bit of shelter. At last he came in sight of the King's Town and to a great field of stocks and stones, and there sat a little old man as withered and brown as a dead leaf, and clad all in scarlet from head to foot.

"Ho! soldier," said he, "are you a good shot?"

"Aye," said the soldier, "that is my trade."

"Would you like to earn a dollar by shooting off your musket for me?"

"Aye," said the soldier, "that is my trade also."

"Very well, then," said the little man in red, "here is a silver button to drop into your gun instead of a bullet. Wait you here, and about sunset there will come a great black bird flying. In one claw it carries a feather cap and in the other a round stone. Shoot me the silver button at that bird, and if your aim is good it will drop the feather cap and the pebble. Bring them to me to the great town-gate and I will pay you a dollar for your trouble."

"Very well," said the soldier, "shooting my gun is a job that fits me like an old coat." So, down he sat and the old man went his way.

Well, there he sat and sat and sat and sat until the sun touched the rim of the ground, and then, just as the old man said, there came flying a great black bird as silent as night. The soldier did not tarry to look or to think. As the bird flew by up came the gun to his shoulder, squint went his eye along the barrel--Puff! Bang!--

I vow and declare that if the shot he fired had cracked the sky he could not have been more frightened. The great black bird gave a yell so terrible that it curdled the very blood in his veins and made his hair stand upon end. Away it flew like a flash--a bird no longer, but a great, black demon, smoking and smelling most horribly of brimstone, and when the soldier gathered his wits, there lay the feather cap and a little, round, black stone upon the ground.

"Well," said the soldier, "it is little wonder that the old man had no liking to shoot at such game as that." And thereupon he popped the feather cap into one pocket and the round stone into another, and shouldering his musket marched away until he reached the town-gate, and there was the old man waiting for him.

"Did you shoot the bird?" said he.

"I did," said the soldier.

"And did you get the cap and the round stone?"

"I did."

"Then here is your dollar."

"Wait a bit," said the soldier, "I shot greater game that time than I bargained for, and so it's ten dollars and not one you shall pay me before you lay finger upon the feather cap and the little stone."

"Very well," said the old man, "here are ten dollars."

"Ho! ho!" thought the soldier, "is that the way the wind blows?"--"Did I say ten dollars?" said he; "'Twas a hundred dollars I meant."

At that the old man frowned until his eyes shone green. "Very well," said he, "if it is a hundred dollars you want, you will have to come home with me, for I have not so much with me." Thereupon he entered the town with the soldier at his heels.

Up one street he went and down another, until at last he came to a great, black, ancient, ramshackle house; and that was where he lived. In he walked without so much as a rap at the door, and so led the way to a great room with furnaces and books and bottles and jars and dust and cobwebs, and three grinning skulls upon the mantelpiece, each with a candle stuck atop of it, and there he left the soldier while he went to get the hundred dollars.

The soldier sat him down upon a three-legged stool in the corner and began staring about him; and he liked the looks of the place as little as any he had seen in all of his life, for it smelled musty and dusty, it did: the three skulls grinned at him, and he began to think that the little old man was no better than he should be. "I wish," said he, at last, "that instead of being here I might be well out of my scrape and in a safe place."

Now the little old man in scarlet was a great magician, and there was little or nothing in that house that had not some magic about it, and of all things the three-legged stool had been conjured the most.

"I wish that instead of being here I might be well out of my scrape, and in a safe place." That was what the soldier said; and hardly had the words left his lips when--whisk! whir!--away flew the stool through the window, so suddenly that the soldier had only just time enough to grip it tight by the legs to save himself from falling. Whir! whiz!--away it flew like a bullet. Up and up it went--so high in the air that the earth below looked like a black blanket spread out in the night; and then down it came again, with the soldier still gripping tight to the legs, until at last it settled as light as a feather upon a balcony of the king's palace; and when the soldier caught his wind again he found himself without a hat, and with hardly any wits in his head.

There he sat upon the stool for a long time without daring to move, for he did not know what might happen to him next. There he sat and sat, and by-and-by his ears got cold in the night air, and then he noticed for the first time that he had lost his head gear, and bethought himself of the feather cap in his pocket. So out he drew it and clapped it upon his head, and then--lo and behold!--he found he had become as invisible as thin air--not a shred or a hair of him could be seen. "Well!" said he, "here is another wonder, but I am safe now at any rate." And up he got to find some place not so cool as where he sat.

He stepped in at an open window, and there he found himself in a beautiful room, hung with cloth of silver and blue, and with chairs and tables of white and gold; dozens and scores of waxlights shone like so many stars, and lit every crack and cranny as bright as day, and there at one end of the room upon a couch, with her eyelids closed and fast asleep, lay the prettiest princess that ever the sun shone upon. The soldier stood and looked and looked at her, and looked and looked at her, until his heart melted within him like soft butter, and then he kissed her.

"Who is that?" said the princess, starting up, wide-awake, but not a soul could she see, because the soldier had the feather cap upon his head.

"Who is that?" said she again; and then the soldier answered, but without taking the feather cap from his head.

"It is I," said he, "and I am King of the Wind, and ten times greater than the greatest of kings here below. One day I saw you walking in your garden and fell in love with you, and now I have come to ask you if you will marry me and be my wife?"

"But how can I marry you?" said the princess, "without seeing you?"

"You shall see me," said the soldier, "all in good time. Three days from now I will come again, and will show myself to you, but just now it cannot be. But if I come, will you marry me?"

"Yes I will," said the princess, "for I like the way you talk--that I do!"

Thereupon the soldier kissed her and said good-bye, and then stepped out of the window as he had stepped in. He sat him down upon his three-legged stool. "I wish," said he, "to be carried to such and such a tavern." For he had been in that town before, and knew the places where good living was to be had.

Whir! whiz! Away flew the stool as high and higher than it had flown before, and then down it came again, and down and down until it lit as light as a feather in the street before the tavern door. The soldier tucked his feather cap in his pocket, and the three-legged stool under his arm, and in he went and ordered a pot of beer and some white bread and cheese.

Meantime, at the king's palace was such a gossiping and such a hubbub as had not been heard there for many a day; for the pretty princess was not slow in telling how the invisible King of the Wind had come and asked her to marry him; and some said it was true and some said it was not true, and everybody wondered and talked, and told their own notions of the matter. But all agreed that three days would show whether what had been told was true or no.

As for the soldier, he knew no more how to do what he had promised to do than my grandmother's cat; for where was he to get clothes fine enough for the King of the Wind to wear? So there he sat on his three-legged stool thinking and thinking, and if he had known all that I know he would not have given two turns of his wit upon it. "I wish," said he, at last--"I wish that this stool could help me now as well as it can carry me through the sky. I wish," said he, "that I had a suit of clothes such as the King of the Wind might really wear."

The wonders of the three-legged stool were wonders indeed!

Hardly had the words left the soldier's lips when down came something tumbling about his ears from up in the air; and what should it be but just such a suit of clothes as he had in his mind--all crusted over with gold and silver and jewels.

"Well," said the soldier, as soon as he had got over his wonder again, "I would rather sit upon this stool than any I ever saw." And so would I, if I had been in his place, and had a few minutes to think of all that I wanted.

So he found out the trick of the stool, and after that wishing and having were easy enough, and by the time the three days were ended the real King of the Wind himself could not have cut a finer figure. Then down sat the soldier upon his stool, and wished himself at the king's palace. Away he flew through the air, and by-and-by there he was, just where he had been before. He put his feather cap upon his head, and stepped in through the window, and there he found the princess with her father, the king, and her mother, the queen, and ...

Not suitable for Kindle
By inf0man
Howard Pyle is perhaps more famous as an artist and illustrator (He taught N.C. Wyeth) but he also wrote several books, the best known is "Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates". This one is a collection of moralistic and didactic tales, told by stock fairy tale characters. Not especially bad, considering its age, but the Kindle edition does not have Pyle's illustrations, which redeems this and other of his collections.

How to purify and energize soul, mind and body during the Fast.

The practice of fasting has been used for both spiritual development and physical healing for many centuries. In the Bahá’í Faith, as in many religions, a period of fasting once a year is seen as a symbol of purification and a means of moving closer towards our Creator, putting us in touch with our duty and destiny here on Earth.

Deborah Walters is a Doctor of Naturopathy and runs a private practice specializing in spiritual, mental and physical healing and welcoming clients from all over the world. She is also much in demand for seminars and public speaking in the United States. In this profound yet highly practical book she draws on both the Bahá’í teachings and her professional experience to examine the human condition of soul, mind and body, how they are interrelated, and how they can be integrated, transformed and energized through the spiritual discipline of the Bahá’í Fast.

this is a fine guide to the process
By Heather, Harlingen, TX
The Supreme Remedy: Reflections on Applying Natural Healing Arts to the Baha’i Fast was a supportive companion during the 19 days of the Baha’i Fast (March 02-March 20) and continues to be helpful in maintaining the spirit of the Fast as the New Year unfolds. This is a book to read and reread many times, filled with profound insights that opened the doors of my mind to reflections and insights of my own. On the practical side it is filled with sensible dietary guidelines. Other topics include suggestions on how to prepare for the Fast, physically, mentally, and spiritually; how to remain focused during the Fast; as well as how to exit the Fast and build on what has been gained physically, mentally, and spiritually. Thank you, Deborah, for creating a ‘fasting buddy.’ This year was my 45th Baha’i Fast and I still found this volume special and helpful. For anyone interested in fasting, whether a novice or a veteran, this is a fine guide to the process.

About the Author
Hey! I'm Jill. I am the only child of my parents, a mom to three great teenagers, an administrative assistant at a church, and a writer. I enjoy growing and learning about God, as well as sharing the things I've learned. I love reading, watching movies and football, Zumba, and spending time with family and friends. If you were to look at the pictures on my phone, you'd find a lot of my children, but probably more of clouds and the sky. When I see something beautiful, I have to capture it.

DAILY DYNAMICS (for an inspired day)
By Judy
I've been a Christian for years and years but have read no devotionals recently. Jill's book has so delighted me, I am now reading it for the second time. Her articles touch beautifully on the "nitty-gritty" of everyday life and are shared with total honesty and sincerity. Many have caused me to pause and examine myself which is, at times, even a bit painful. I highly recommend Jill's book to anyone who enjoys a daily dose of "provocative thought, personal challenge" and "progressive Christian growth." Thank you Jill!

Turnabout, Texas
November 1897

Hank Chandler hefted the two carpetbags he carried as he tried to usher his niece and nephew down the aisle of the train toward the exit. He needed a shave. And a good night's sleep. And a cup of coffee that didn't taste like tar.

But most of all he needed for Enid, his sister, not to be dead.

Chloe paused a moment, as if confused. "Alex, keep a tight hold on your sister's hand, please." It seemed wrong to put an eight-year-old in charge of his ten-year-old sister, but for now that was how it had to be. His niece didn't want anything to do with him at the moment.

Here he was, returning home to Turnabout, with two scared orphans. With a cat in tow. Why couldn't they have a sensible pet, like a dog?

Even with Aunt Rowena's help, how would he be able to care for all of them?

Especially Chloe.

He glanced down at his niece. With her straight brown hair, slightly pointed chin and expressive green eyes, she looked so much like Enid at that age that it hurt. He knew the girl's angry, defiant demeanor was just a front she'd put on to deal with all she'd lost. But how was he ever going to get through to her if they couldn't even communicate properly?

He still had difficulty coming to terms with the fact that his life had changed so drastically in such a short span of time. A month ago—it seemed a lifetime ago now—he'd been a bachelor with a very orderly, uncomplicated life. A life he'd been quite content with. Then he'd received that telegram that had sent him hightailing off to Colorado.

And his life had been irrevocably changed.

But he couldn't waste time feeling sorry for himself. What had happened was over and done with, and there was nothing to do but move on. Besides, his niece and nephew were facing much bigger, more traumatic changes to their own lives. He had to do what he could to help them feel at home here.

The weight of that responsibility pressed down on him again. The one thing he could do for them in the short term was provide a sense of order and routine to their lives. To make them feel safe again.

They reached the exit and Hank maneuvered around to step out on the platform first. He set down the bags and turned up his collar. Turnabout's weather had turned blustery and colder than it had been when he left. Of course, that had been late October and it was now late November.

Hank helped Alex down first, swinging his slightly built nephew out of the train and onto the platform easily. Then he turned to Chloe. The girl stared at him defiantly as she hugged her cat tighter, as if daring him to try to swing her down the way he had Alex.

His heart went out to her but he didn't know how to make things better for her. With a smothered sigh, Hank offered her his hand. She took it and stiffly stepped down. As soon as her feet touched the platform, she released his hand and took Alex's.

Would Chloe ever learn to accept him? Like it or not, both kids were in his care now. And they were not happy about it. Not that he blamed them. He'd torn them away from everything they found familiar—their town, their home, their friends—to bring them here, to a town they'd never set foot in before, to live among strangers. And at a time when they most needed the comfort of the familiar. But he hadn't had much choice.

Thank goodness Aunt Rowena had agreed to help him out, at least for the next couple of weeks, until he could make a more permanent arrangement.

He'd think about just what that more permanent arrangement meant later.

Aunt Rowena should already be at his house, getting the rooms ready and preparing a nice hot meal to welcome them home. That ought to make this first day in Turnabout easier for all of them.

Hank raked a hand through his hair as he looked around. He'd asked his aunt to have a wagon waiting for them, but there was no sign of any such vehicle. Normally he'd just walk, regardless of the weather—after all, it was just a little over a mile away. But this homecoming was anything but normal.

He hoped that Aunt Rowena hadn't encountered problems. Regardless, there was no point in keeping the kids out in this weather while they waited.

Hank touched Chloe's shoulder. When she looked up, he very slowly and deliberately explained. "Let's go inside the depot." He used hand gestures to make his intentions clear.

"Yes, sir," Alex responded. He gave his sister's hand a little tug and started moving in that direction. Hank picked up the bags and followed.

With two kids, especially two tired, travel-weary kids, the sooner he got everyone home, the better. He hoped Aunt Rowena had had time to get the children's rooms ready.

But the lack of waiting transport had him wondering what else might have gone wrong today.

When they reached the door, he stepped forward and pulled it open quickly, ushering the children inside and out of the wind. From the corner of his eye he noticed someone sitting on one of the benches that lined the far wall of the depot. The woman seemed to be reading a book, and a closer look revealed it was Janell Whitman, one of the town's two schoolteachers.

Her presence reminded him, that was one more thing to add to his list of tasks—getting the kids enrolled in school.

The woman looked up just then and he tipped his hat in greeting. He wondered for a moment if she was going on a trip. Then he turned back to the counter and dismissed her from his thoughts.

The stationmaster gave him a smile of greeting. "Hi, Hank. Welcome back."

Hank nodded as he ushered the kids up to the counter. "Thanks, Lionel." He gave the man a mock grimace. "You sure could have ordered up some better weather to welcome us home."

"This damp chill just rolled in yesterday. It was downright pleasant two days ago for the Thanksgiving festival, though. Too bad you missed it."

They'd been on the train Thanksgiving Day. Not that he regretted missing the festival. Neither he nor the children had been in the mood for any sort of celebration.

Lionel smiled at the children. "I see you brought some friends back with you."

"This is my niece and nephew, Chloe and Alex."

"Welcome to Turnabout." Then Lionel's expression sobered. "I'm right sorry about your ma and pa."

Alex shifted closer to Chloe's side, but neither kid said anything.

Then Lionel held out a slip of paper. "By the way, a telegram came for you this morning."

Hank reached for the telegram, unable to repress a sense of dread. The only telegrams he'd ever received had contained bad news. The last one had brought him word of his sister's and brother-in-law's deaths.

He slowly unfolded the paper and read the missive.

Tom Parson taken ill. No other driver available to transport me to Turnabout. Will likely be Monday before I arrive. Rowena Collins Today was Saturday, so that meant he was on his own for at least two days. And there would be no warm, clean house or hot meal to greet them. This wasn't the homecoming he'd expected at all.

Hank resisted the urge to crumple the telegram and toss it away. Instead he focused on figuring out how to deal with this new setback.

One thing at a time. The immediate concern was that there was no wagon on its way to transport them.

He glanced back Lionel's way. "I need to fetch a wagon to get the kids and their belongings back to my place. There are a couple of trunks in the baggage compartment that belong to us. If you could just leave them on the platform when they're unloaded, I'll take care of them when I return." The livery was only two blocks away but hiring a horse and wagon was an expense he could ill afford right now. Could he ask Lionel to keep an eye on the kids while he took care of business at home?

"Excuse me, Mr. Chandler?"

Startled, Hank turned to find the schoolteacher standing behind him. "Ma'am?"

"I'm sorry, but I couldn't help overhearing what you said just now. These two children appear to be exhausted and the wind is picking up outside. I would be glad to keep them company while you see about the wagon."

"You're not here to catch the train?"

She shook her head with a smile, as if the thought was absurd. "No, I'm just waiting to see if any mail arrived for me."

Hank sent up a silent prayer of thanks for this good news in an otherwise miserable day. He couldn't have asked for a better caretaker for the kids. The schoolteacher would naturally be accustomed to dealing with uncooperative children. Of course, she probably hadn't had to deal with anyone with Chloe's particular problem before.

"I appreciate the offer, ma'am, and I'd certainly like to take you up on it." He made sure he was turned so Chloe didn't have a clear view of his face. "But there's something you need to know before you take them on."

"Oh?" Her green-flecked brown eyes studied him patiently.

"I'm sure you heard about their parents." News of that sort normally spread fast in Turnabout.

Her expression softened. "I did. My condolences on the loss of your sister and brother-in-law."

He nodded. "Well, the accident that killed the kids' parents also damaged Chloe's eardrums. She's become totally deaf."

Her reaction surprised him. There was a sudden flash of something in her expression that seemed more than sympathy or mere surprise.

Whatever it was, it seemed to be very personal.

Everything inside Janell stilled. Deaf. Not again.

The terrible memories of that nightmarish time came tumbling back.

But this wasn't about her. This little girl needed help—help she was uniquely qualified to give. How fortuitous that she'd wandered in this morning to check on the mail. But then, God's timing was always perfect.

A moment later, Janell realized Mr. Chandler was studying her, concern digging furrows in his brow. "Ma'am, are you okay?"

She straightened and met his gaze, determination stiffening her spine. "As it happens, I actually have some experience dealing with the deaf."

Surprise and relief flashed in his dark gray eyes before he resumed his businesslike expression. "Miss Whitman, if that's true, then you are truly a godsend to us right now."

He glanced at the children. "And I'll take you up on your generous offer to watch them while I'm gone."

"It'll be my pleasure."

He stared at the children for a moment, appearing to be at a loss for words. For just a moment she sensed a vulnerability in him that tugged at her.

Poor man. This was a difficult situation for anyone to be put in, much less a man who'd seemed happy with his bachelor status. He looked as if he hadn't slept in ages—and she didn't think it was just travel weariness. There was at least one day's growth of beard on his chin, enhancing rather than detracting from its square rug-gedness. And his dark brown hair was in need of a trim.

Not surprising—it just meant he cared. And she could empathize. When this had happened to her sister, her entire family had been impacted. How much worse must it be for someone who had to deal with the situation on his own? It did him credit that he'd stepped up to do what he could for the children. There was a lot to admire in a man who would do that.

Of more concern right now, however, were the children themselves. It was obvious they needed a mother's touch. Like his uncle, the little boy's straw-colored hair was also just a tad too long, and he kept tucking it back behind his ears as if it bothered him. And Chloe's rebellious attitude, a natural reaction to what she'd been through, would only be healed through an abundance of patience and love.

Mr. Chandler straightened, rubbing his jaw. He tapped Chloe's arm and waited until she met his gaze, then explained the situation to them. "Alex, Chloe, this is Miss Whitman. She's one of the schoolteachers here in Turnabout. I'm going to go home to fetch a wagon, but I'll be back as soon as I can. Miss Whitman will be staying with you until then."

She approved of the way he spoke slowly and enunciated each word. It showed he understood Chloe's limitations and cared enough to try to get through to her. Not that the girl seemed able to read his lips just yet. But in time, she might be able to learn.

Janell gave him a reassuring smile. "Don't worry—we'll be just fine." Then she turned to the children. "Won't we?"

Alex gave a tentative nod. Chloe merely ignored them.

But Janell refused to be put off by their lack of enthusiasm. She turned to Mr. Chandler, her smile still firmly in place. "There, we three are already friends. So you can go take care of this wagon business. I have nothing pressing to tend to today." Then she looked around. "But perhaps we can find someplace more comfortable and interesting to wait."

The sawmill owner gave her a questioning glance.

"I was thinking perhaps the children would be willing to take a short walk," she explained. "Say, just as far as the Blue Bottle?"

His expression cleared as understanding dawned. "Now, that's a very good idea." He turned to the children. "Miss Whitman is offering to take you to the town's sweet shop. What do you think—wait here or brave the wind for a couple of blocks to reach the Blue Bottle?"

Alex perked up. "You mean a candy store?"

Janell nodded. "And a very good one. You can find all sorts of tasty treats—chocolate drops, sugared pecans, pumpkin brittle, caramels and much more."

"I like candy just fine." Alex took his sister's hand. "And Chloe does, too."

Chloe looked up then, her eyes darting back and forth as if trying to make sense of their conversation.

Yes, this girl definitely needed her help. Janell straightened. "Well then, if you don't mind taking a short walk—" she glanced toward Mr. Chandler "—and if your uncle doesn't mind, why don't we go see what the Blue Bottle sweet shop and tea parlor has to offer this morning?"

"I don't mind at all," Mr. Chandler assured her. Then he turned to the stationmaster. "Lionel, if you don't mind, I'll leave our bags here and get them when I come back for the trunks."

While Mr. Chandler took care of business, Janell noticed Alex trying to help his sister understand what was going on, but Chloe merely looked confused and frustrated. The girl hefted the cat higher, resting her chin against his furry back.

Janell touched Chloe's arm. When the girl met her gaze, she pointed to the cat. "What's his name?" she asked.

Alex answered for her. "His name is Smudge."

Janell thanked him. She knew he was trying to help his sister, but somehow she had to make the boy understand that he wasn't truly helping her by always answering for her. Her own sister, Lizzie, had been that way as well, rarely speaking. And at first they'd compensated for her, answering for her so that she hadn't had to figure out what had been said. But they'd eventually learned that was the wrong approach.

Chloe would need to learn to reengage with the people around her or she would turn into a sad, lonely hermit.

"Ready?"

Mr. Chandler's question brought Janell back to the present. With a nod, she followed the children outside while Mr. Chandler politely held the door open.

What a joy to read another great story from Winnie Griggs. I ordered the rest of the books I hadn't read. Right now I am enjoying the story of Chance and Eve. The story of Janelle (schoolteacher with a secret) was really quite endearing in so many ways. So far, all of the books I've read have grabbed my interest from very beginning. I've noticed each of the stories has one or the other of the main characters, has a hidden secret that causes that one much distress. I love how the story moves along and is life changing for those involved. Always the right ending.

This is a tender story. The setting for this is Turnabout, Texas November 1897.
It starts right out with the drama. Hank Chandler has arrived in Turnabout with his 10 year old niece
Chloe and 8 year old Alex at the train depot. Hank looks for his Aunt to pick them up but she sent a telegram she would be a few days late.

Chloe and Alex's parents had died in Colorado. The same accident left Chloe deaf. They really don't know their Uncle.

Janell overhears him about to leave the kids and luggage at train depot while he goes to rent a wagon. She offers to take the children to the sweet shop with her to wait. When Hank explains about Chole she offers to help them all cope.

Janell is a teacher. She also dealt with her sister going deaf when she was 17. So she can teach them how to cope plus take care of them for a few days.

Hank decided that he should marry for the kids sake. He asked Janell but she said no. Janell did offer to help him find a wife.

I loved how the kids wanted to step up and learn some sign language too. The whole town knows that Hank went to get the kids after their parents died.

This is a clean read. I loved watching them all get closer to each other and help each other.

I was given this ebook to read by Net Galley

Lovely
By Books And Spoons
I enjoyed this story. The road to love for Janell and Hank came about in a different way, the obstacles they had to face weren't easy. But from the first moment Hank and the children arrived in the town, Hank and Janell form a great team, as they work together to give a safe home and environment for the kids.
I liked the dedication Hank had for the children and his family. He is a good, solid man, kind and determined to find a workable solution, no matter what the cost.
Janell's heart is pure gold, her kindness, sweetness, and knowledge of the new challenges helping out in many situations.
The feelings in between them take more time to develop. But the admiration and passion come forward, and is palpable.
Sometime the Love Inspired novels have more focus on the faith, and finding God's guidance in the situations. In this story, it is more on the background, but still prominent part of the characters live.
This story shows clearly how family can be formed in many ways, and it is what's in your heart that matter. Understanding, kindness, and acceptance go hand in hand, as the small town Texas gets two new residents with unique challenges. Sometimes it takes courage to leave a foolish pride aside, and go after for your happiness, and Hank and Janell demonstrate

Review
Shirley Griner-Regan
Able to create magical realities, the author has woven a story of mystery, suspense, and romance in the intriguing setting of eternity. Well done! Will rival Twilight and Harry Potter Series to any reader. Novel is demanding of a sequel and definitely would make a magnificent movie as the main character Auri visits incredible and fantastical different realities. FIVE STARS!!! Shirley Griner-Regan

My first thought upon completing this book was that it was almost like Twilight with angels instead of vampires, and how much teens would swoon over Cassiel, one of the story's central characters. The first couple of chapters read like a picture-perfect existence for Aurelia (the main character), her mother, Clem and Clem's mother. Just when one is thinking that things are too good to be true, things start creeping out of the woodwork and Aurelia's existence isn't quite what it seems.

The strongest part of the novel lies in the descriptions. Blow has a strong sense of space and place, and its easy to get drawn into Aurelia's world. Some of the characters are more convincing than others, the most interesting development in the character of Belial. There were also some discrepancies at the start of the novel in Cora's name, but this is ironed out as the novel progresses,

Overall, a nice, easy read, and definitely ones for fans of Twilight and its ilk.Rebecca Finlayson

About the Author
Maha and David are the authors of The Esoteric Path of Marriage: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment Through Relationship.
When he was 28, David entered a silent meditation retreat in Joshua Tree, California. Facing enormous feelings of depression and anxiety, meditating all day and throughout the night for many days he experienced a dramatic spiritual awakening. He says that it was as though a root was pulled out of his chest and with it, from the depths of his Soul came a primal scream as his pain-body exploded. He was left with a radical feeling of Love that overwhelmed him into spontaneous singing and dancing. He was admitted into a mental hospital for three days where he refused the medication even as it was offered along with the promise of an immediate release (having seen the film One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest).
With a profound new perspective and an expanded state of consciousness (known in the East as a full-blown Kundalini Awakening) he has spent the ensuing decade, predominately in India, integrating his awakening and blazing the trail of Enlightenment through relationship with Maha. It was in India where Maha and David met in the ashram of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, known to the world as Amma, 'the hugging saint'.
Maha, having experienced a divine vision in the American desert quit her job in London for a pilgrimage to India. Following some months of meditation, she had an encounter with the formless aspect of the Divine Mother as her heart leapt into spacious communion with that Eternal Presence, sparking the beginning of an intense, devotional awakening. To this day she finds herself surrendering to divine raptures, accompanied with blissful tears. Maha, (also known as Lakshmi) is a compassionate healer. Through holding the space of Unconditional Love she has reconnected many to their Spirit and has helped relieve the suffering of people afflicted with back problems, depression, chronic fatigue etc. Many report having divine visions in these sessions.

A great guide for couples and individuals on the path of spiritual awakening!
By Jenny
Maha and David Brown have written a beautiful guide for healing and spiritual awakening through relationship. The book includes many guiding tips and helpful advice for partners in a relationship on the spiritual path. Reading it together we many times felt a recognition and a resonance with what Maha and David share. We feel that this book points the reader towards a non-dual awareness and awakening to oneness in a very beautiful and practical way!

The specific practices and processes for communication shared in The Esoteric Path of Marriage is something we recognize and use in our own marriage. We feel that communication is a cornerstone for couples and individuals in the spiritual awakening, as the deep communication with Spirit or Truth can only be shared.

Coming from an experience of A Course in Miracles it resonates deeply to read about how meditation and forgiveness is shared practically with deep integrity and acknowledgement of the truth of one another’s being. We feel that The Esoteric Path of Marriage is a unique and helpful book for couples in spiritual awakening!

An incredibly Heart-melting read!
By Thilo H.
"The Esoteric Path of Marriage" was offered to me as review copy and I have to say it indeed arrived in my hands at the perfect time. The deeper we go into exploring what sacred relationship and marriage means and consciously approach it as an every-moment spiritual practice, the more all tiny parts of our pain-body start presenting themselves with all their deeply encoded contractions asking (sometimes crying) for the LOVE they haven't received. Maha and David's book is an excellent read to guide and remind us of this profound process and most of all of our commitment to Truth. I highly recommend this beautiful and intimate book to all.
“Remember, Eternity has already won!”, I will keep this gem of yours in my Heart :)

Amazing! It's a great read for any child who may not have a physical father in their life. She provides the Biblical reference on each page so that each can be looked up in the Bible and studied or discussed further.
