Awesome new series

Amazing, outstanding and awesome. That is all I can say about Alisha Basso’s new book Bloody the Bones the first installment in the Fractured Legends Series.
She has outdone herself with this new book. The story centers around 19 year old Getty Rose who moves into her deceased grandmothers house in Timer Cove. After they have moved in she learns this small town is much different from living in California. Quickly Getty learns she is the first new student ever to the town and starts to learn about the town’s history of Witch trials along with the countless women accused of witchcraft. She meets 2 friends, Andy and Kelli, on her first day of school. They are helping her get acclimated into her new surrounding by explaining the high school politics.
Getty finds herself searching for a voice she hears in her head only to find its source from a mirror her grandmother left for her. Sebastian tests her to see if she is worthy to release him and her adventure begins. As Getty learns about the town and her heritage Getty falls for her teacher Jackson Emerson who isn’t what he seems.
Getty’s adventure is just getting started in the first book and it leaves you wanting more.
I highly recommend this first book in the series and am eagerly awaiting the next installment.

OMG I freaking Loved this book. High Five!!!

Getty Rose Michaelis and her mother moves to Timber Cove after her grandmother passes. In the attic of her grandma's house Getty will find a mirror that will start her on a journey of mystery, intrigue, laughter, and possibly Love.

The mystery of finding her grandmother's mirror is in the attic, but what she discovers is actually a person inside the mirror....Sabef...he has been trapped in the mirror for decades, and he is about to be set free...or is he...

New to the high school, she just wants to finish the year and graduate for her mom. She meets Andy and Kellie who turn out to be the greatest friends she could ask for. They tell her about the "Elite" townsfolk and the teacher hot as sin Mr. Emerson is one of them. So is Jared, who is trying to get her to go out with him. He is promised to Amanda, another Elite, ya know the arranged kind of marriage, but Jared wants no part of it.

Timber Cove has a lot of secrets, and Getty along with her friends, Mr. Emerson( Jackson) and Sabef will try and discover that witches are real and Getty is a powerful one.

Can Getty release Sabef from the mirror?
Will Jared's family get revenge?
Will Jackson and Getty become lovers?

Book that promotes acts of kindness in kids

I received a copy of this book for a honest review. This book is a wonderful way to encourage kindness in children. It does a wonderful job of explaining how a simple act of kindness can change the world for a person. I love that it is in both Spanish and English and can be used in lessons for either language or in a bilingual class.

About the Author
During his fifty-five-year career, Clifford D. Simak produced some of the most iconic science fiction stories ever written. Born in 1904 on a farm in southwestern Wisconsin, Simak got a job at a small-town newspaper in 1929 and eventually became news editor of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, writing fiction in his spare time.

Simak was best known for the book City, a reaction to the horrors of World War II, and for his novel Way Station. In 1953 City was awarded the International Fantasy Award, and in following years, Simak won three Hugo Awards and a Nebula Award. In 1977 he became the third Grand Master of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and before his death in 1988, he was named one of three inaugural winners of the Horror Writers Association’s Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Down-to-earth humanity and depth of philosophy

When I first started reading Simak over 30 years ago it was primarily for his nostalgic, bucolic settings and the refreshing down-to-earth humanity of his characters. This book has both of those features in abundance. Only now, am I coming to truly realise the depth and breadth of Mr. Simak's philosophy. It is a philosophy than runs true in all of his books (at least I believe that I've managed to track down and read them all.) It is a philosophy of humanity over technology and progress. It is the idea that sometime in the past humanity made the wrong decision, took the wrong path. Yet, here and there, there are a few isolated oddballs and misfits who have somehow managed to remain human, even though it must put them at odds with the majority. As for the breadth of his thinking, this book alone touches on so many things, my favorite things: love of ancestral homes and the land, good stewardship of the land and it's creatures, American Indians, astral travel, telepathy, God and the soul.... Even his "Dark Walker" shows a true understanding of Jungian Shadow. And there is always the "twist", the new idea, such as aliens and robots with more humanity to them than most of the human race. What's more, Simak always leaves you with a feeling of hope, though sometimes it is a bitter sweet hope.
Sometimes I think that perhaps Simak wasn't speaking so much of this world, but that he was intuiting a better world for humane spirits on the other side....

My first Simak.

One day on Earth, something strange happens-- the People vanish. The vast majority of humans are suddenly gone for the earth, leaving only an isolated pocket of remnants and all the robots. 5000 years passes and instead of developing new technology, the remaining humans find themselves expanding in unexpected ways and in the meantime the robots, deprived of people to serve, take up the abandoned task of serving God.
As noted before, here and elsewhere, Simak is the King of pastoral science fiction. The action is gentle and philosophical rather than exciting and violent, but nonetheless compelling to read. One of his best and the book that introduced me to his work.

One of Simak's best

This is one of my favorite books by Simak. As usual, the detail of the characters themselves is somewhat sparse. Simak wastes no time in getting right to the plot, and that is what I like about his books. He can pack more story into a 200-page book than some authors do in several 500-page books. This book is a story of Earth in the future, when most of humanity has been mysteriously taken from Earth, but a few people are still left on Earth. The people that are left barely age, living thousands of years, and are able to teleport themselves to other planets (a concept also visited in Simak's "Time is the Simplest Thing"). After 3,000 years, Earth is rediscovered by the people that were taken away from it.

he provides no useful information, only his personal views

unreadable book. the author preaches throughout the entire book
about how he thinks all magic and for that matter all thoughts are
evil. he says this constantly on every page, every few words. he states
that people should not visualize anything and they should not read
any other books of magic, only his book. he provides no useful information,
only his personal views. the worst book i have ever read. and i have read
some crummy books. he never tells the readers how to improve their magic
to get better results, he only tells them why they should not practice magic.
if there was an option for giving this book less than a one star rating i would
give it no stars. this book getting five star reviews from others is something
that i don't understand. i wonder, do most people like to be preached to and
similar? maybe the average persons find that appealing for some reason.
i don't know why.

Is a very interesting book about a very complex subject yet written in a way that made it easy to understand. There could have been more elaboration on most of the topics and it would have helped if certain topics referenced were included in the narrative rather than the reader being required to research them independently. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in visualizing their way to a better life.

The author confuses objective reality as creation of intersubjective consciousness. Of course, physical reality preceded consciousness, but that is hand-waved. With no sense of humility, they claim a "quantum understanding", which presumably would suggest that they have perfect knowledge of all things through superposition. I suspect they don't really understand their own claims, but it sounds goods.

In a nutshell, they're a charlatan. Avoid.

A mythological love story

The "Secrets of Artemis" is the story of the coming of age of the Greek goddess Artemis, told through the imaginative lens of fantasy writer C.K. Brooke.
I wish I would have had something like this to read when I was in the 9th grade and trying to learn about Greek Mythology. I was never able to care much back then about the Greek gods and goddesses because their stories never touched my heart.
That all changed with this book, when the 16-year-old Artemis, goddess of the hunt, came to life for me, and the legendary details of her life were expanded upon through Brooke's capable storytelling.
The story of Artemis told throughout history is that she remained a virgin through the decree of her father Zeus, the King of the Gods, despite her great friendship with the giant, handsome and kind hunter Orion. But this story proposes that she and Orion were secret lovers despite her father's wishes.
Many of the characters of Greek mythology came to life for me in "Secrets of Artemis." I think this would be a great book to share with young people if you want to captivate them with the stories of the gods and goddesses worshiped at at time when civilization was young.
Like all successful young adult novels, it's an entertaining and satisfying read for adults as well.

"Much that is believed about me is only partially true, or twisted in some way"

I have always enjoyed reading Greek mythology and reading about the Gods and Goddesses who inhabit those myths and this is a story about Artemis, Goddess of the hunt. The story of Artemis is familiar to most readers who have sampled the Greek myths. She is usually portrayed as the goddess who is chastised. Unable to be joined with a man, to be pure for all ages. But this story has a different direction for us to explore. ;)

The story is written all the way from when she was born with her twin brother Apollo and we begin to learn how she acquires her power, her independence but what makes this book different than just a regular mythology book is that it's told through Artemis's voice herself and I love that!

I think this is a really well crafted tale for the book-ish reader who likes Greek mythology and it's tales. A fun and charming story with a very strong female protagonist that you instantly fall inlove with. The writing is absolutely beautiful and you cannot put it down. C.K. Brooke is definitely a top author of mine that I think deserves way more credit.

I loved this novel as much as the first two

Dark Forsaken by H.D Smith is the third novel in the Devil’s Assistant series. After the second novel, the story picks up with Claire, the presumptive queen of the fourth realm, having been tasked with a job before she can return to her realm and her people. After the death of the curator of the museum of the four realms, it is her job to meet with every candidate that presents themselves for an interview and to select one to replace the old curator. The rulers of the other three realms are reluctant to have her succeed. In addition to this dull job, the other rulers, Boss, Mab, and Harry, call her in to deal with growing unrest in the underworld, developing supposedly at the hands of her Fallen followers. Together with the Quads, or four half demon siblings that Claire claimed as her followers from the big three with whom she has a mutual dislike and mistrust, she must attempt to resolve this issue. To top it all off, she must find and deal with the other contenders for the Fall throne. If she fails she will either lose her throne or her life.

I loved this novel as much as the first two. It is a fantastic story and the complexity and great characters make it shine. As before, I liked Claire’s attitude toward the magical world. Now, she has to grow into her ruler position and this requires adjusting her behavior and attitude toward the big three, the rulers of the other realms, and the four Quads. She has become more suspicious, also recognizes that she has to also start to trust some people to survive. She is finally is embracing her position in the magical world, but still has a lot to learn. The story picked up well from the last novel and provides a decent amount of backstory to make it not too confusing if the reader hasn’t read the first two in the series. But the plot is complicated and therefore I would really recommend reading the first two books first. There are a lot of bits of information and past relationships that were hard to remember. However, this complexity is what makes the story interesting. This novel was also filled with time jumps that drove the plot forward and made the plot more exciting. Overall, all the characters continue to be complex with their motivations difficult to guess and it is easy to stay invested in the story. I can’t wait for the next novel in the series.

The narration by Lauren Fortgang was fantastic as before. I think she captures all the characters really well. She especially does a great job voicing Claire and really captures the snarky commentary from the different characters. The production quality was good as well. I would recommend this novel to any one like urban fantasy novels with complex interweaving storylines.

My Thoughts:

As many of you who follow my reviews will remember, way back in the summer of 2014, I took a chance on a review request from a new-to-me author and her upcoming paranormal series at the time. I took a chance on an unknown and was absolutely blown away at the results. Dark Hope showed me everything an indie author could give and blew the doors wide open on my thoughts on the conventions of the genre. It's been many months and reads since that first novel and I still hold nearly all paranormal novels I review to the high standards that HD Smith set!

Could Smith still ignite that spark after three novels?

It's been over a year since I was immersed into the very intricate world of HD Smith and The Devil's Assistant. I won't lie, while this series is a favorite of mine, they are not easy to keep on top of. More characters than I could possibly name and settings and plot cycles that mirror a high fantasy series, this series is truly a testament to a writing style such as Smith's. While the casual reader can certainly enjoy this series, it will take a keen eye and devotion to truly follow this story. That being said, I was so thankful that Smith included a glossary and 'recap' of sorts into the beginning of the novel. Without it, I certainly would have been lost. It took a few chapters, but once I dove back in and found myself surrounded by the world Smith created, I couldn't look back. The story came back to me like an old friend and I was ready to tackle Claire's latest adventure.

And what an adventure it was!

I have to say that Dark Forsaken ended up being my favorite in the series thus far! And that's saying a whole lot. The stakes are higher than they've ever been. With Claire, no longer merely the Devil's assistant, now the Queen of the Fourth Realm, it's time for her to take her place among the Big Three. But can Mab, Harry, and The Boss ever truly see Claire for what she really is? With the Quads in their most peculiar predicament yet, only with Claire's help can they ban together and save the Underworld and the future of the realms from truly uncertain fates.

The plot for this one is extremely fast paced, but I do believe it was easier to follow at times than the previous two installments in the series. Everything flowed a little easier and I wasn't left with near as many questions as before. Smith does an incredible job of easing the reader into her world in order to avoid any confusion. One of the greatest things about this series is that Smith doesn't let anything back. She doesn't sell her readers short and gives us a full story that fans can really enjoy with ease. These aren't quick reads by any means either, if you decide to take the plunge, be ready for the time commitment!

My absolute favorite part of Dark Forsaken was the amount of character development that we see. I won't go into too much detail to avoid massive spoilers, but throughout three novels now, Smith has amassed quite a collection of characters for this series. With such a large cast, many haven't received the amount of page-time I would like in the past. Thankfully, Smith really ups the ante in Dark Forsaken and we begin to learn so much more about some of the most intriguing supporting characters in the series, particularly The Quads. The Quads are my absolute favorite characters in this series and I am so glad Smith gave them such an expanded role in this third outing. I will say that I was slightly disappointed by the lack of interaction between Claire and the Big Three in this one, but it definitely was not too big of a let down with the huge cliffhanger Smith left us on! I know book four is going to be absolutely amazing!

As I've mentioned in my reviews for the previous two novels, this is one of the most unique series I have read and reviewed in all my time blogging. It's so original and refreshing. It's becoming increasingly hard to even place this series in a genre classification. It's so much more than a paranormal, it's more than fantasy, it transcends genre classification and literary boundaries in only a way an author as talented as Smith can. Anyone who isn't adding The Devil's Assistant series to their TBR is missing out!

As you guys can clearly see, Dark Forsaken ended up being an absolutely incredible read for me. I couldn't set it down and even days after finishing, I'm still suffering from a massive book-hangover. It was everything I was looking for and then some. Smith has truly outdone herself, setting the stage for greatness as she continues this groundbreaking series. It should come as absolutely no surprise that I am granting Dark Forsaken by HD Smith a near-perfect 5-star review! I highly recommend this series to all readers, regardless of genre preference. It's a thrilling adventure, sure to please all readers. Buckle up, it's a trip across the realms that's one 'Hell' of a ride!

4.5 stars this series was a great urban fantasy find!

I'm really enjoying this series. I wader across the first two in audio book form and was happily surprised. (The author said this will be out on audio too although she doesn't have a date.) There are really only 2 little negatives about the book.
1- its a complex story with a lot of world and character building. Its been at least a few months since I read the other two, so I had forgotten quite a bit. The author did provide a character recap in the beginning of the book, which was nice.
2- It was too short! :) It wasn't novella short but it didn't seem as long as the first two, and when the story is good you want a good long book. That didn't detract in any way from the story though!

Tries, but takes entirely too much liberty speaking for God...

This is a book I really was eager to read as the book introduced it is for anyone experiencing loss, loniness, anger, insecurity or sadness... and I am experiencing all or most of these.
This book was written from the perspective of Jesus talking to the audience, based on Christian ideas or principles and each days devotional is paired with a bible verse. These devotions are simply worded and the bible verses are in NIV, NLT or other simply worded bible versions.
I was conflicted with the devotional. Though the use of NIV or other other simply worded versions for often comfort or are more easily understood, they are also further from the original meaning and out of context, making the verses not as accurate or even true to the original intention. I also had a big problem with the author taking the liberty of speaking for God and using the voice of God. It's one thing to quote the bible but anot entirely different thing to say that God is, has or should say something to individuals that he has not said. There also is given no indication of who these promises in the bible are for, as they do not apply to everyone. Not everyone has an eternity of Jesus care, love and rest to look forward to... but the author assumes that all people who pick up this book do.
I would have been able to give this book a higher rating if the devotion had been written as the authors own opinion or her voice, but it is or borders on heresy as its written.

I highly recommend this book for any woman in need of encouragement. It speaks straight to the heart.

SUMMARY: This is a women's devotional book written from the perspective of Jesus' voice. On each two page spread you will find an encouraging word on the left and the accompanying verse on the right. The devotional is not split into sections or labeled by days of the year, but rather is a straight read through. There are many topics covered here including grief, suffering, envy, and forgiveness.

REVIEW: For review purposes, I read through this entire devotional in one go even though you are supposed to read one devotional at a time. I found many very relevant and encouraging devotionals. A couple brought me to tears they were so relevant to where I am right now. Others, I wanted to share with friends right away to encourage them and their hurting hearts. I like the simple format and quick to read devotionals. The verses were chosen in their simplest to understand version (from different Bible versions--NIV, NLT, etc.) making it even more user friendly. Instead of spending time trying to understand the words, I was able to take the time to soak in the words and the Bible verse. I highly recommend this book for any woman in need of encouragement.

I love it!! I bought one for my best friend, also. I lost my sister 4 years ago and it really helps me to get through the bad days. I would highly recommend it.
