"You miserable alt gayse. Oh, no, you don't. Not again!" Anne Stoltzfus shot to her feet when she spotted the intruder working his way under the fence beyond her red barn. She stepped closer to the kitchen window. He was almost through.

"What's wrong?" Roxann Shield remained seated at Anne's kitchen table, her eyes wide with concern.

"It's Joseph Lapp's old goat. He's getting into my garden. I'm not going to lose the last of my precious tomatoes or another prized pumpkin to that thief."

Anne dashed out into the cool morning. Flying down the steps, she raced toward the rickety fence separating her garden plots from her cantankerous neighbor's farm, yelling as she ran. "Out! Get out of there!"

Her nemesis was halfway under the fence when she reached him. Armed with only a kitchen towel, she flew into battle, flapping her weapon in the black-and-brown billy goat's face. The culprit tried to retreat, but his curved horns snagged in the sagging wire. The more he struggled to escape her attack, the more tangled he became. He bleated his misery as loud as he could.

Anne stopped flapping when she recognized his dilemma. He couldn't go forward and he couldn't go back. She rested her hands on her hips as she scowled at him. She heard laughter behind her. Looking over her shoulder, she saw Roxann doubled over with mirth on her front steps.

Anne turned her attention back to the goat. "I should leave you here. It would serve you right to spend the night with your head stuck in the fence."

Feeling sorry for the goat was the last thing she wanted to do, but he did appear miserable sprawled on his belly with his head cocked at an awkward angle. His eyes were wide with fear and his mouth hung open. She looked about for his owner, but Joseph Lapp was nowhere to be seen. Of course he wasn't. Trust her neighbor to be absent when his animal was misbehaving. That was usually the case.

How many times had his goats managed to get in her garden and eat her crops? More than she cared to count. More than she could afford to lose. Each time she drove them out, she bit her tongue to keep from telling Joseph Lapp exactly what she thought of his smelly horde. Her Amish faith required that she forgive grievances, but enough was enough. If the man didn't repair his fences soon, she was going to have a word with Bishop Andy about Joseph's poor stewardship. She didn't want to cause trouble, but she was tired of being on the losing end of the situation.

However satisfying a conversation with the bishop might be, it didn't solve her current problem. The goat continued bleating pitifully. A number of other goats looked over their pens to see what was going on. Anne waited for Joseph to appear, but he didn't. She studied the billy goat for a long moment.

"If you are to be free, I reckon I'll have to do it. Remember this kindness and stay out of my garden."

"Be careful," Roxann called out.

Crouching in front of the goat, Anne put her hand on his head and pushed down so she could untangle his horns. She wrinkled her nose at his stench. Why did he smell so bad? If she had a garden hose handy, she would bathe him before she let him up. Maybe that would deter him from visiting next time. He struggled harder but she was only able to unhook one horn. "Hold still, you wicked animal."

Suddenly, the goat surged forward. His second horn popped free and he made a break for it, barreling into Anne. The impact toppled her backward into her precious tomato plants. Although it was mid-October, the vines still bore huge red fruit, the very last of the summer's bounty and a sure cash crop at her produce stand. She sat in openmouthed shock as the feeling of squished tomatoes beneath her soaked through her dress. So much for a goat's gratitude.

She shook her fist at him. "You miserable, ungrateful beast!"

"Do you need a hand?"

The mildly amused voice came from the far side of the fence. Joseph Lapp stood with his arms crossed on his chest and one hand cupped over his mouth.

He was a tall, brawny man with wide shoulders and muscular arms. A straw hat pulled low on his brow covered his light blond hair. The wide brim cast a shadow across his gray eyes, but she knew he was laughing at her. Again. They rarely shared a conversation, but he was always finding some amusement at her expense. Did he enjoy seeing her suffer?

She scrambled to her feet. "I don't need a hand. I need you to keep your goats out of my garden. Unless you keep them in, I'm going to complain to the bishop."

Joseph walked to the gate between their properties a few yards away and opened it. "Do what you must. Chester, koom"

The billy goat snatched a mouthful of pumpkin leaves and trotted toward the gate. He walked placidly through the opening, but Anne saw the gleam in his beady black eyes when he looked over his shoulder at her. He would be back. Well, she wouldn't be so kind to him next time. It wouldn't be a kitchen towel. She'd find a stout stick.

Joseph closed and latched the gate. "I will pay for the tomatoes. Just throw the ruined ones over the fence."

She brushed off her stained maroon dress and glared at him. "I'm not going to reward that mangy animal with my fresh tomatoes, even if they are ruined. He'll only come back wanting more."

"Suit yourself. If I can't have them, I won't pay for them."

"Are you serious?" Her mouth dropped open in shock. She took a step toward him and planted her bare foot in another tomato. The pulp oozed between her toes.

"You sat on them. Chester didn't." Joseph turned to walk away.

Furious, Anne plucked the closest whole tomato and threw it with all her might. It hit Joseph squarely between the shoulder blades, splattering in a bright red blob where his suspenders crossed his white shirt.

Horrified, she pressed her hands to her mouth. She had actually hit the man.

Joseph flexed his shoulders. Bits of broken tomato dropped to the ground. Chester jumped on the treats and gobbled them up. Joseph turned to glare at Anne.

She didn't wait to hear what he had to say. She fled to the house as fast as her shaky legs could carry her. She dashed past Roxann and stopped in the center of her kitchen with her hands pressed to her cheeks.

"What a great throw." Roxann came in, still chuckling. "Did you see the look on his face?"

"In all the years I played baseball as a kinner, no one wanted me on their team. I couldn't hit the broad side of the barn when I threw a ball. But today I struck my neighbor."

"You didn't hurt him with a tomato."

"You don't understand." How could she? Roxann was Englisch. She didn't have to live by the strict rules of Anne's Amish faith.

Roxann stopped giggling. "Will you get into trouble for it? I know the Amish practice nonviolence, but you weren't trying to hurt him."

"I struck him in anger. That is not permitted. Ever. If Joseph goes to the bishop or to the church elders, it will be cause for a scandal. I'm so ashamed."

Roxann slipped her arm over Anne's shoulder. "I'm sure Mr. Lapp will forgive you. You are only human. Put it out of your mind and let's finish these reports. You and the other Amish midwives are doing a wonderful job. Your statistics will help me show the administration at my hospital that our outreach education program is paying off. Our funding is running out soon. If we're going to continue educating midwives and the public, we have to prove the benefits outweigh the cost."

Roxann, a nurse-midwife and educator, was determined to improve relations between the medical community and the Amish midwives, who were considered by some doctors to be unskilled and untrained. It was far from the truth.

Anne allowed her mentor and friend to lead her back to the table and resume the review of Anne's cases for the year. Glancing out the kitchen window, Anne looked for Joseph, but he wasn't in sight. She nibbled on her bottom lip. Was he going to make trouble for her?

A full harvest moon, a bright orange ball the color of Anne's pumpkins, was creeping over the hills to the east. The sight made Joseph smile as he closed the barn door after finishing his evening milking. It had been two days since the tomato incident, but he still found himself chuckling at the look on Anne's face when she'd realized what she'd done. From shock to horror to mortification, her expressive features had displayed it all. She might be an annoying little woman, but she did provide him with some entertainment. Especially where his goats were concerned. Her plump cheeks would flush bright red and her green-gray eyes would flash with green fire when she chased his animals. She was no match against their nimbleness, but that didn't keep her from trying.

Goats enjoyed getting out of their pens. Some of them were masters of the skill. Was it his fault that the best forage around was in her garden plot?

It wasn't his intention to make life harder for the woman. He planned to mend his fence, but there simply weren't enough hours in the day. Now that the harvest was done, his corn cribs were full and his hay was safe in the barn, he would find time to make the needed repairs. Tomorrow for sure.

He was halfway to the house when the lights of a car swung off the road and into his lane. He stopped in mid-stride. Who could that be? He wasn't expecting anyone. Certainly not one of the Englisch.

Most likely, it was someone who had taken a wrong turn on the winding rural Pennsylvania road looking for his neighbor's place. It happened often enough to be irritating. His farm was remote and few cars traveled this way until Anne Stoltzfus had opened her produce stand. Now, with her large hand-painted sign out by the main highway and an arrow pointing this direction, he sometimes saw a line of cars on the road heading to buy her fresh-picked corn, squash and now pumpkins. Since the beginning of October, it seemed every Englisch in the county wanted to buy pumpkins from her. He would be glad when she closed for the winter.

He didn't resent that Anne earned a living working the soil in addition to being a midwife. He respected her for that. He just didn't like people. Some folks called him a recluse. It didn't matter what they called him as long as they left him alone. He cherished the peace and quiet of his small farm with only his animals for company, but that peace was broken now by the crunching of car tires rolling over his gravel drive. From the barn behind him, he heard several of his goats bleating in curiosity.

Whoever these people were, they should know better than to come shopping at an Amish farm after dark. Anne's stand would be closed until morning. The car rolled to a stop a few feet from him. He raised his hand to block the glare of the headlights. He heard the car door open, but he couldn't see anything.

"Hello, brooder!''

His heart soared with joy at the sound of that familiar and beloved voice. "Fannie?"

"Ja."

His little sister had come home at last. He had prayed for this day for three long years. Prayed every night before he laid his tired body down. She was never far from his thoughts. Still blinded by the lights, he took a step forward. He wanted to hug her, to make sure she was real and not some dream. "I can't believe it's you. Gott be praised."

"It's me, right enough, Joe. Johnny, turn off the lights."

Something in the tone of her voice made Joseph stop. Johnny, whoever he was, did as she asked. Joseph blinked in the sudden darkness. He wanted so badly to hear her say she was home for good. "I knew you would come back. I knew when your rumspringa ended, you would give up the Englisch life and return. Your heart is Amish. You don't belong in the outside world. You belong here."

"I haven't come back to stay, Joe." The regret in her voice cut his joy to shreds. He heard a baby start to cry.

After few seconds, his eyes adjusted and he could make out Fannie standing beside the open door of the vehicle. The light from inside the car didn't reveal his Amish sister. Instead, he saw an Englisch girl with short spiky hair, wearing a tight T-shirt and a short denim skirt. He might have passed her on the street without recognizing her, so different did she look. No Amish woman would be seen in such immodest clothes. It was then he realized she held a baby in her arms.

What was going on?

He had raised Fannie alone after their parents and his fiancée were killed in a buggy and pickup crash. He'd taken care of her from the time she was six years old until she disappeared a week after she turned sixteen, leaving only a note to say she wanted an Englisch life. For months afterward, he'd waited for her to return and wondered what he had done wrong. How had he failed her so badly? It had to be his fault.

It was hard to speak for the tightness that formed in his throat. "If you aren't staying, then why are you here?"

The driver, a young man with black hair and a shiny ring in the side of his nose, leaned toward the open passenger-side door. "Come on, Fannie, we don't have all night. Get this over with."

"Shut up, Johnny. You aren't helping." She took a few steps closer to Joseph. "I need your help, brooder. There's no one else I can turn to."

Were those tears on her face? "What help can I give you? I don't have money."

"I don't want your money. I… I want you to meet someone. This is my daughter. Your niece. Her name is Leah. I named her after our mother."

"You have a bubbel?" Joseph reeled in shock. He still thought of his sister as a little girl skipping off to school or playing on their backyard swing, not someone old enough to be a mother. He gestured toward the car with a jerk of his head. "Is this man your husband?"

"We're not married yet, but we will be soon," she said in a rush.

"Soon?" Had she come to invite him to the wedding?

"Ja. As soon as Johnny gets this great job he has waiting for him in New York. He's a musician and I'm a singer. He has an audition with a big-time group. It could be our lucky break. Just what I need to get my career going."

THOMAS PAINE (1737-1809) was an Anglo-American political theorist and writer born in Norfolk, England. In 1774, Paine emigrated to America, bearing letters of introduction from Benjamin Franklin. Soon thereafter, he became involved in the clashes between England and the American colonies and published the enormously successful pamphlet Common Sense in 1776, which was widely distributed and contributed to the patriot cause throughout the American Revolution.

About the Author
English-born Thomas Paine left behind hearth and home for adventures on the high seas at nineteen. Upon returning to shore, he became a tax officer, and it was this job that inspired him to write The Case of the Officers of Excise in 1772. Paine then immigrated to Philadelphia, and in 1776 he published Common Sense, a defense of American independence from England. After returning to Europe, Paine wrote his famous Rights of Man as a response to criticism of the French Revolution. He was subsequently labeled as an outlaw, leading him to flee to France where he joined the National Convention. However, in 1793 Paine was imprisoned, and during this time he wrote the first part of The Age of Reason, an anti-church text which would go on to be his most famous work. After his release, Paine returned to America where he passed away in 1809.

Thomas Paine, like others among our nation's founders (Ethan Allen, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Joel Barlow), considered himself a deist, a term that encompasses a wide range of beliefs but is principally based on "religious rationalism": that, initially created by a benevolent God, the universe operates on rational rather than supernatural principles. Paine (and Allen), however, departed from the cautiously nuanced approach to religious issues adopted by his peers and vociferously rejected Judeo-Christian tenets and scriptures. In "The Age of Reason," Paine outlines his objections to theism and his belief in deism, and he dissects the inconsistencies in both the Old and New Testaments.
Paine published the book in two parts: the first he hurriedly finished in January 1794 when he realized he would be arrested during the French Revolution (passages were in fact written from the Luxembourg Palace in Paris, where he was imprisoned). The second part was written the following year, and he responds to the critics of the first part with a no-holds-barred attack on the veracity of the Bible.
Paine presents his basic belief that "it is only in the creation that all our ideas and conceptions of a word of God can unite," and later in the book he says that "the creation is the bible of the deist." To Paine, the Bible is the word of man, not the Word of God, and he confronts many of the literalist beliefs proffered by the clergy and worshippers in his day. Many of his arguments, once shocking and blasphemous, are now taken for granted. For instance, he analyzes internal evidence in the books allegedly written by Moses, Joshua, and Samuel to show that it's impossible for Moses, Joshua, and Samuel to have written them--a view that most Christians and nearly all biblical scholars acknowledge today. In other ways, he is way ahead of his time, pondering the minuteness of our world in the immensity of the universe, speculating that other planets around other stars may well hold other intelligent species, and mocking the resulting conclusion that "the Son of God . . . would have nothing else to do than to travel from world to world, in an endless succession of death."
Paine believes that God made a complex multi-world universe (rather than a single world) so that it would serve as a textbook for humankind: "As therefore the Creator made nothing in vain, so also must it be believed that he organized the structure of the universe in the most advantageous manner for the benefit of man." It is through this "revelation" of nature that believers can know God: "The principles of science lead to this knowledge; for the creator of man is the creator of science, and it is through that medium that man can see God, as it were, face to face."
Even if one disagrees with Paine (and many obviously do),"The Age of Reason" is an essential book both historically and philosophically. It should be read whether you hope to provide support for your own beliefs or to discover what non-Christians thought two centuries ago. It's inevitable that every reader will approach this book with an agenda, but even Christians should wrestle with Paine's arguments--since many of them are still heard today.

Age of Reason is still sparking debate

It is evident to me that the staying power of Paine's Age of Reason is strong-- I need only look through the mixed opinions here at Amazon to see how dramatically it impacts those who read it. For me, it was a great wake-up call. I read Age of Reason at the beginning of this year and didn't know much about what to expect. From the first few pages I knew that I had found a book that reflects how I feel about religion. Paine offers a sensible alternative to atheism and the vast supply of revealed religions that abound in the world. To be logical, Paine points out, you need not give up a belief in a Higher Power. But you also don't have to sell your soul to charlatans and holy books written hundreds of years ago by men, not gods.
The first half of Age of Reason outlines Paine's own beliefs as well as those he rejects. He gives reasons for every point he agrees or disagrees with and it is clear to the reader how Paine feels. Paine wants to spell out what his thoughts are so that he won't be misjudged by his peers. (Jefferson went through a similar ordeal-- because of his connections with France, he was labeled "a French infidel and atheist" neither of which was a true statement. In the second half, Paine sets out to show the Biblical discrepancies to those who wanted to prove his ideas false by using the Bible as their "evidence". In a relatively small number of pages, Paine debunks and demystifies (in my opinion) a fair amount of 'Christian' theology and scripture. If one man can do it so well in only a few pages, what does that say for revealed religion? That question is for each of us to answer individually and Age of Reason is required reading for anyone who is serious in doing just that.

The Most Remarkable Book Ever Written

If the title above seems like hyperbole, I am prepared to defend it: Thomas Paine was one of the most important figures of the American revolution, his pamphlet "Common Sense" did more to bring the colonies to revolt than any other document. After the revolution he went to France believing the French revolution to be the next step in the development of the freedom of mankind. While there he was condemned to death by Robespierre and detained pending execution. Believing that his death was imminent, Paine wrote Part One of Age of Reason, which is a compelling critique of the Bible and the faults of Christianity. His analysis is thorough, detailed and compelling, which is particularly impressive since he did it entirely without access to a Bible! This topic will offend many (which explains Paine's current demise from the pantheon of revolutionary heroes) but it should be read both for its analysis of the Bible and for appreciation of one of America's founding fathers.

Great horror story!

This novel was so suspenseful and teetering on the edge of horror that I was both fascinated and repulsed by it...and I mean that in a good way!

I read Therese Heckenkamp's previous novel, Past Suspicion, and really enjoyed it, so I knew I'd probably be pleased with Frozen Footprints as well. Not only was I pleased, I was blown away.

I try to read mostly Christian fiction because I want to avoid the smut and/or graphic violence and language. But many times, Christian novels wind up to be sappy and sophomoric, usually resulting in a completely unrealistic conversion-and-they-live-happily-ever-after experience.

Not so for Charlene and her twin, Maxwell. They are Catholics, but not perfect Catholics, who come from a very dysfunctional family. A tragic experience forces them to rely on their faith in order to survive, but things don't come easy. There are many snares along the way and the reader is kept on the edge of his seat wondering how things will sort themselves out.

Heckenkamp does a great job in creating a villain who is evil and loathsome. The hair on the back of my neck stood up as I read several scenes in the book. It was a treat to read a truly scary story that didn't include gratuitous violence and gore.

I hope Heckenkamp will continue to write more horror stories. We need more quality fiction, especially in this genre. Ms. Heckenkamp, I'll be waiting for another like this, but I'll be sleeping with the lights on!

Finally! A book about faith that isn't "fuzzy wuzzy"!

I ordered "Frozen Footprints" with a biased mindset: I'd read many works of suspense fiction that are labeled Christian--both Catholic and Protestant--where the author has ultimately resolved the suspense with everything short of angels with golden harps descending on the non-believing antagonist as he falls to his knees crying "I believe!"

Not Therese Heckenkamp!

She creates characters that are believable--almost frighteningly so. They are so realistically flawed and yet so convincing in their faith journeys that you find yourself wondering if the author has been able to read your mind (or your secret journals or diaries!)

Charlene Perigard, like her twin brother, Maxwell, has lived a life of luxury bought at a high price... an overbearing penny pinching Grandfather who uses their inheritance to control them. When it seems that Max has gone off the deep end to extort his share of money, only Charlene's concern for her brother, and her "twin instinct", convinces her that something is seriously wrong and compels her to find her brother who has fallen into the hands of a vengeful maniac. When Charlene is captured as well, her long-buried faith awakens in her, but it is frail and shaky at best. No sudden miracles rescue her and her brother--on the contrary, their faith is tested again and again, and yet their faith grows in realistic and painful ways.

It may sound cliche but I couldn't put it down!

Edgy and Entertaining!

Eighteen-year-old twins Charlene and Max Perigard have grown up under their wealthy but often cruel grandfather. When Max disappears and a ransom note is received, Charlene tries to persuade her grandfather to pay the ransom, but the older man thinks this is another attempt by his grandson to get money from him. Without her grandfather's help, Charlene tries to find her brother before it's too late.

Therese Heckenkamp's second novel is an exciting page turner with non-stop action. It's a very different experience than the author's first book, Past Suspicion (Christian Romantic Suspense). Frozen Footprints has all the elements of an edgy thriller with Catholic references interspersed throughout the novel.

The protagonists are well-developed with flaws and strengths. The antagonists are frightening and believable. As a former court reporter, I enjoyed the courtroom chapters.

For me, as a reader, the measure of a good novel is to be there with the characters as they move forward in the story. Therese Heckenkamp's talent as a storyteller is the ability to create a plot, characters and setting that are realistic and at the same time entertaining. Her writing style is crisp and varied and she keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat.

Caution to parents: Some parts of this book are graphically violent. However, it is well worth the read and I highly recommend it for older teens and adults.

Lily was right. If she wanted to stay in Banshee Creek, that was her choice. If she wanted to wear desiccated mammals on her feet, that was also her choice. If she wanted to stalk back to the car in an offended huff wearing thin rubber soles, so be it.
He should respect that.
So he respectfully watched her walk to the SUV. His gaze remained courteous as her foot slipped on the icy tracks. He did not crack a smile as the step turned into a pretty impressive pirouette. 
She wouldn't win any Bolshoi Ballet auditions, but that move was, actually, rather graceful. Her arms gyrated wildly as she tried to steady herself, and white powder cascaded around her extremely attractive gluteus maximus as she crashed, butt-first, into the snow.
Only the tiniest chuckle escaped his lips as he stepped forward to help her.
She glared at him and waved off his proffered hand. 
"Don't. Say. Anything," she hissed.
The warning was unnecessary. He couldn't say a word, he was too busy trying not to laugh.
She was not amused.
"I swear," she sputtered. "I'm going to brain you with your thousand-dollar flashlight and blame it on the devil monkey."
He tried to stop laughing, but it was hopeless. He used the yoga breathing trick his first co-star had taught him. The one that involved quick, shallow breaths. That helped a bit.
But she did not appreciate his struggles.
"That's it," she grunted, lunging for the flashlight. "You're going to be the first episode of CSI: Banshee Creek."
He caught her easily, spinning with her on the snow, his pent-up laughter bursting forth like water through a busted dam. She tried to glare at him, but her offended façade quickly crumbled and she joined in the laughter. He held her close for a long minute, drinking her in.
When the last giggle died out, she licked her lips, the gesture so natural, so familiar, so right that there was only one thing he could do.
He kissed her.

Misleading Title, but a Good Read

There's not much paranormal about this story and there really isn't a ghost. That being said, I enjoyed this book. The gyrations poor Sebastian had to go through to get his HEA with Lilly was pretty funny. Once again, this is a timely, second chance kind of story. Lilly and 'Bastian had dated in High School but he'd gone off he LA to strike it rich as an actor while she'd played it safe and stayed home. Now, it's ten years later. Will a weekend stranded together in a mountain cabin be enough to convince these two that they belong together?

Okay, Not Great

I am trying to figure out what everyone else saw in this book that I missed. I originally thought I might like this because I enjoy reading paranormal books, especially when they involve ghosts, but this book is not about ghosts, and is paranormal because of the haunting town where the story takes place and the absurd legend/monster who figures in it. Lily, a stager/decorator in a small town in Virginia, is stuck in a blizzard, at a remote cabin she was remodeling/redecorating, with her ex-boyfriend, Sebastian, who had eft her and gone off to become a well-known movie star. Though they parted a while ago, there is still a spark between them, which is growing as they stay together during the storm—until Sebastian’s ex-fiancée/movie star shows up unannounced, hoping to rekindle their romance and make a big splash in the tabloids to help their recently released movie become a big hit. Though she did not plan it, Lily and Sebastian move right back to where they were in their relationship before he left for the West Coast until his ex shows up. In the middle of this rekindling of their relationship, there is a local legend monster, a strange creature who supposedly appears to people in the area who shows up in the cabin area during the storm. As can be expected, there are also some paranormal searchers/followers out looking for this creature who show up at the cabin.

The story moved along well enough, with Lily and Sebastian holed up in the cabin during the blizzard, renewing their friendship and rekindling their relationship. There was not much suspense to the story, however. When Lily and Sebastian meet and are stranded in the cabin, you expect them to rekindle their romance, which they do, which made up a large part of the story. However, as always, you expect complications in this relationship, which there are, but they really happened too fast, without any lead up, and took the story in a strange, new twisted path. I found the first two thirds of the book an easy read, though rather boring and slow moving. Then, quite unexpectedly, the book moves in different direction, with a strange twist, as paranormal followers appear on the scene, looking for the legendary creature, and whisk Lily off to some foreign land, while Sebastian remains behind, broken hearted by her leaving and trying to stop his one-time fiancée from putting out the false story that she and Sebastian have reconciled (to push their movie to hit status). The plot was strange to me and I had to stop myself to figure out what was going on and who was doing what with whom at times. I think the author could have written a longer book, leading more carefully into some of the events that became important rather than rush right into things with little or no lead in. I also think the author tried to pull in a larger audience, with the title, as there was no ghost in this book, expect perhaps the ghost of the one-time romance between Lily and Sebastian. This is sort of a paranormal book and takes place in a paranormal setting and may appeal to someone who enjoys this sort of thing. Finally, I did not find it especially humorous and fail to see how anyone can label this a romantic comedy. I was light-hearted, but not really funny. I received this from Library Thing to read and review.

Sebastian and Lily are a great couple. High school sweethearts who get a second chance. Gave it 5 stars because I enjoyed the humor.

Wonder why "Ghost" is in the title when none appears in the story.

According to the introduction of this classic book, John Wesley Hanson’s goal was to provide witnesses and testimonies of early church fathers as to the belief in universal salvation. It is not a presentation of scriptural evidence, but the “sole object is to show that those who obtained their religion almost directly from the lips of its author [Jesus Christ], understood it to teach the doctrine of universal salvation” (p.4).

Chapter 1 presents the earliest Christian creeds: The Apostles’ Creed (about 200 AD); Tertullian’s belief (160 AD); the Nicene Creed (325 AD); and the Niceo-Constantinopolitan Creed (that of the Roman Catholic Church). The author contends that none of these creeds even hint at a doctrine of “everlasting punishment” (p.6), “no thought of endless woe” (p.11), “no post-mortem woe of sinners” (p.13), and in fact “gave expression to no condemnation of universal restoration, though, as will be shown, the doctrine had been prevalent all along” (p.12). Even though Tertullian, born in 160 AD did believe in the eternally damned, his private beliefs were not put into any of the creeds. In fact he believed that there is a portion of God in everyone’s soul and that there is something good in the worst of us and something bad in the best of us. The author claims that at the time Tertullian had “not discovered that worst of dogmas relating to man, total depravity” (p.10). The author writes, “The early creeds contain no hint of it, and no whisper of condemnation of the doctrine of universal restoration as taught by Clement, Origen, the Gregories [Gregory Nzianzen, who presided over the council of Constantinople in which the Nicene Creed was fully shaped, and Gregory of Nyssa, an “unflinching advocate of extreme Universalism”, and the one who added the words in the creed “I believe in the life of the world to come” (p. 11)], Basil the Great, and multitudes besides” (p.15).

In Chapter 2 the author cites many 19th century theologians who claim Christianity before Augustine was simple hearted, sincere and purer, presenting the joyfulness and cheerfulness of the gospel—kingdom of God, savor, grace, peace, living water, bread of life—brimming full of promise and joy which spread the faith quickly. According to him it was Augustine’s theology that ruined the spread of Christianity and ripened into the mediaeval centuries with semi-pagan secular government, and grave Roman Catholicism, influenced by ascetic religions of Asia—Buddhism contaminating Christianity with celibacy, monasteries, convents, hermits, etc. (p.19-20). Asceticism seems to have appeared in 250 AD.

In Chapter 3 Josephus and even Philo, a contemporary with Christ, are said to have used the Greek word anionian to mean “age-long,” or limited duration. Jesus used the same word for the punishment of sin, aionion kolasin—age-long chastisement. Philo used aionion for temporary duration and aidion to denote endless. The Pharisees were said to use eternal punishment, aidios timoria, while the Essenes used never-ceasing torment, timoria adialeipton and deathless torment, athanaton timorion. However in opposition to the language of the Pharisees and Essenes, Philo used the exact phraseology as Jesus did in Matt 25:46, “Then they will go away to aionion kolasin (age-long punishment), but the righteous into aionion zoan (age-long life).” The author (Hanson) quotes Stephens as claiming aionios meant “three generations” to the Jewish scholars who wrote in Greek (p.38). The word kolasin means chastisement and connotes restraint, reproof, check, pruning, correction, to deter for the future, and punishment with reformative intent. Origen is said to reply to Celsus an explanation of Gehenna being analogous to the “known valley of the Son of Hinnom, and signifies the fire of purification” (p.41).
That I think is really significant. Let me explain with a little of my own developing theology relative to the possibility of a Christ-centered Universalism. Although I haven’t found direct proof that Origen gleaned the idea of “fire of purification” from Scripture, I personally see its possibility. It may be seen occurring in the fire of baptism by the Holy Spirit that Jesus was supposed to bring according to John the Baptist (Matt 3: 11): “I baptize you with water… He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” In the Greek, those words “Holy Spirit” and “fire” cannot be separated into two distinct, separate baptisms. They are one and the same. In other words, the Holy Spirit uses fire as baptism, a fire of purification—purification through conviction, repentance, and restorative unification. This was seen in the tongues of fire at the first baptism in Acts 2 and as predicted by Jesus as to the conviction of the world by the Holy Spirit in John 16:8f. If fire is used by the Holy Spirit to bring salvation to those on this side of death, then maybe the fire of Gehenna/Hades is also salvatory. The aionion kolasin (age-long punishment or pruning) may well be the reproof and correction process that the Holy Spirit uses for burning away the sin nature of the wicked in hell as fire is generally used in Scripture. This idea is the premise of my book called, “God’s Great Scheme: All Creation for Christ, Christian Holism” (published Feb. 2015). This idea is consistent with what 1 Cor 3:12-15 teaches for the Day of Judgment:
Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—
each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by
fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built
on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer
loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

The second half of Chapter 3 speaks of the origin of doctrine of endless punishment coming from Pagan and Jewish incorporations of Egyptian and Babylonian influences (during captivities hundreds of years before Christ), resulting in doctrines of annihilation of the wicked and/or endless torment being eventually avowed. The apocryphal Book of Enoch, appearing more than a century before Christ, and appearing a little later, the Book of Ezra advocated these views. Hanson makes note that Jude 6 quotes the Book of Enoch “not to endorse its doctrine, but to illustrate a point as writers nowadays quote fables and legends” (p. 45).
Chapter 4 is all about the toleration and decline of universal restoration. Pagan influences in the church began to regard endless torment in Hades and subsequently disregarded doctrines of prayers for the dead, Christ preaching to those in Hades, and softening other features taught by early church fathers such as Clement, Origen, and other Alexandrian fathers. Universalism became cherished only as a secret for the chosen few, withheld from the multitude as more beneficial to them than the truth—a means of mitigating their recklessness and sin (p.56).

Chapter 5 presents two kindred topics: the belief that Christ proclaimed the gospel to the dead in Hades between his crucifixion and resurrection; and prayers for the dead. Hanson claims the early church put great emphasis on 1 Peter 3:19, that Christ went and preached unto the spirits in prison. This doctrine was prevalent as late as Augustine’s day when it became listed as a heresy. He quotes several early church fathers: Eusebius, “Christ, caring for the salvation of all…opened a way of return to life for the dead bound in the chains of death;” Athanasius, “the devil… cast out of Hades, sees all the fettered being lead forth by the courage of the savior;” Origen on 1Kings 28:32, “Jesus descended into Hades, and the prophets before him, and they proclaim beforehand the coming of Christ;” Origen again, “Not only while Jesus was in the body did he win over not a few only,…but when he became a soul, without the covering of the body, he dwelt among those souls (in Hades) which were without bodily covering, converting such of them as were fit for it;” Didymus, etc.
Hanson goes on to say that the condition of the dead was not regarded as unalterably set/fixed is evident from the fact that prayers for the dead were an ancient custom. Clement claimed prayers of the good on earth help the dead come to repentance. Even Augustine accepted the doctrine, for he prayed after his mother’s death, that her sins might be forgiven, and that his father might also receive pardon (Confessions 9:13). On page 68, Hanson notes that Origen’s tenant of Catharsis or Purification was absorbed by the growing belief in purgatory. On page 66, Hanson sites Pope Gregory as being the first inventor of purgatory at the close of the sixth century and quotes him, “For some light faults we must believe that there is before judgment a purgatorial fire.” Hanson says, “This theory is a perversion of the idea held anciently, that all God’s punishments are purgative…The word rendered punishment in Matt 25:46 (kolosin) implies all this.”

Chapter 6 tries to address the theology of the immediate successors of the apostles relative to Universalism. In the presentation of the Gnostic sects of Chapter 7 the only important conclusion is that the generally accepted view between them of the good at death ascending to dwell with the Father and the wicked passing through transformations until purified, was not faulted by early Christian orthodox fathers (p.95). Gnostics claimed all unworthy, perverted evil would eventually disappear either through conversion, annihilation or purification. They were the theologians of the First Century, trying to establish a systematic Christian doctrine that would also harmonize the Hellenic culture—answering questions to the problems of evil and the destiny of humankind. Hanson says Clement, Origen, the Alexandrine schools, and probably the great majority of Christians agreed with many of these Gnostic views.

The important point of Chapter 8 is that the Sibylline Oracles (written between 181 BC and 267 AD) were in wide use by many First Century Christians. The Universalism portions of the Oracles, written in 80 AD, used the language of Matt 25:46, aionion torment of the lost, their immortality (athanaton), but also claimed an eventual end to their torment.
Chapter 9 establishes the Gnostic philosophy of Clement of Alexandria (150-220 AD). He is considered the greatest of all Christian apologists except Origen. These Alexandrian fathers emphasized reason and philosophy to bear on their faith (p.112), ranking knowledge (gnosis) above faith (pistis), placing the “two in such an imminent relation to one another that neither could exist without the other” (p.125). Clement defined philosophy as not to mean “Stoic, nor the Platonic, nor Epicurean, nor that of Aristotle; but whenever any of these sects had said that was fit and just, that taught righteousness with a divine and religious knowledge, this I call the eclectic philosophy” (p.113). Clement wrote, “We wait for no human testimony, but bring proof of what we assert from the Word of the Lord, which is the most trustworthy, or, rather, the only evidence” (p.113).
Clement wrote Christian doctrine from the oral traditions that had been communicated by the Lord to the apostles, Peter and James, John and Paul, and handed down from father to son. Hanson points out that it is inconceivable that Clement could misinterpret or misunderstand the New Testament scriptures, written as they were in his mother tongue. Thus when he used the Greek word aionion of Scripture, but yet taught and maintained the prevalent belief in universal restoration, he must of meant it as “age-long,” and not to be confused or used interchangeably with aidion (endless), as the Latin speaking six century church fathers like Augustine did (Augustine did not even know scriptural Greek) (ref.p.115). The book “God’s Great Scheme” goes into great detail about the Greek words “aionion” (age-long) and “apokatallasso” (reconciliation, that which Christ does for all creation) and is worth reading to understand the finer details according to Scripture.

Chapter 10 presents the life of Origen Adamantius of Alexandria (185-254 AD). But in my opinion the most important emphasis lies in the texts that Origen quotes as proof of Universal salvation (footnote on p.150):
Luk 3:16 John answered them all, saying, "I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

1Pe 3:18-21 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ

Whereas Chapter 10 tries to present the original thoughts of Origen, Chapter 11 presents secondary descriptions and references towards Origen by his contemporaries and those who followed him: Pamphilus, Eusebius of Caesarea, Didymus of Alexandria, Athanasius, Basil the great, Gregory of Nazianzum,, and Gregory of Nyssa; and among the Latin fathers, Hilary and Jerome.
Of the six theological schools in Origen’s time, only one favored eternal punishment, one was in favor of annihilation of the wicked, two were in favor of the doctrine of universal restitution on the principles of Origen, and two in favor of universal restoration on the principles of Theodore of Mopsuestia (p.174). The one school that taught endless punishment derived its doctrine by mistranslation and misunderstanding of the Greek Scriptures, and instead infused “the virus of Roman secularism into the simplicity of Christianity” (p.175). Origen was accused of heresy by misinterpretation of his works, but for all those heresies listed, his idea of universal restoration was never condemned as heresy. Heresies listed included “teaching inequality between the persons of the Trinity, the pre-existence of the human soul, denying the resurrection of the body, affirming that wicked angels will not suffer endless punishment, and that all souls will be absorbed into the infinite fountain whence they spring like drops falling into the sea. This later accusation was a perversion of his teaching that God will be ‘all in all’” (p.176).

Chapter 12 eulogizes Origen by quoting many contemporaries of the author, while Chapter 13 presents third century theologians who were either indifferent towards Origen’s universal restoration concept or embraced it, either in their writings or due to friendly association with Origen and his schools of theology.

Chapter 14 starts by listing five celebrated early church fathers who “beyond all rational doubt” where Universalists because they were students of Origen. Chapter 15 through 18 lists and discusses many Universalist in the early and later years of the Church.
Hanson claims in Chapter 19 that the deterioration of Christian thought began with Constantine at the beginning of the fourth century. Christianity of the Catacombs and of Origen became the church of the popes, the Inquisition, and the asceticism of the Middle Ages. Hanson claims that during Constantine’s reign corruptions like monastic systems came into Christianity from the Hindu religions and other sources, Constantine’s mother, Helen, practicing cultic gathering of virgins into the church for repasts and prayer (p.261). Jerome (331-420 AD) who had once embraced and praised Origen’s Universalism now began to deny his adherence in the face of Augustine’s growing influence and even “violently attacked those who had held such opinions in order to divert attention from himself” (p.266). Hanson cites several scriptures from Jerome’s writings that established testimonies for Universalism (“that the punishment of the wicked will one day, after many ages, have an end”): Romans 11:25; Galatians 3:22; Micah 7:9; Isaiah 11: 1; Psalms 30: 20 (p.264).

Chapter 20 emphasizes how Aurelius Augustinus (354-420 AD) changed the Universalism theology of the early church to a “form of Manichaeism with the addition of a perpetual dualism that Mani had made temporal” (p.272). It was Augustine that argued Matthew 25:46 used the same Greek word applied to “life” as to “punishment” to signify endless duration, and that the Greeks used only aionios to mean endless. The interesting thing is that when a Spanish presbyter, Orosius, visited Augustine in 413 to show him the Greek word did not denote eternal duration, but limited duration, Augustine replied that “though aion signifies limited as well as endless duration, the Greeks only used aionios for endless” (p.274). The real problem seems to be that Augustine did not know Greek. In fact he is quoted as saying he “hates Greek,” and the “grammar and learning of the Greeks.” Hanson makes a valid point in saying that it is strange that all the history of criticism and generations of scholars should take their cue from an incompetent theologian who knew almost nothing of Greek and who contradicted and subverted the teachings of such men as Clement, Origen, the Gregories and others whose mother-tongue was Greek. Hanson brings up several unsuccessful attempts to suppress Universalism in Chapter 21, while Chapter 22 presents the eclipse of Universalism. After 730 AD the prevalent doctrine of Origen was eclipsed by the word “pseudo-Christianity that reigned like a nightmare all over Christendom from the seventh to the fifteenth Century.” It was due to the “pagan and Latin secularism of ignorant hail-converted hordes of heathen barbarians and of the hierarchy that could not employ it in its ambitious schemes” (p.298). According to Hanson the darkest hour of ignorance, cruelty, and oppression of the church was highlighted by Michael Angelo and Dante just before the Reformation, they presenting the distorted views both in art and poetry. Hanson then ends the chapter with reference to the distinctive intelligence of the Reformation and the invention of the printing press which he foresees as the rebirth of the restoration of Christianity, and especially into his current 20th Century which was about to dawn at the publishing of his book of in 1899.

Chapter 23 presents a list of conclusions to summarize Hanson’s book. He states that the first century of the primitive church was involved in issues of apologetics instead of matters of eschatology. Clement and Origen between 180-230 AD declared that “all punishment, however severe, is purificatory; that even the ‘torments of the damned’ are curative.” Origen explained Gehnna as signifying limited and curative punishment and all the other ancient Universalists declared that “everlasting” (aionion) punishment is consonant with universal salvation” (p.304). Jesus, his Apostles, and the primitive Christians avoided the words which the pagans and Jews defined as endless punishment, aidios or adialeipton timoria (endless torment). Instead the Lord, his Apostles, and the early Christians used the words kolasis aionios, defined as chastisement of indefinite, limited duration. (p.305.) The early Christians taught that Christ descended into Hades, preached the gospel to the dead, and released them. According to Hanson that shows repentance beyond the grave and perpetual probation. (For much greater scriptural proof of all this consult “God’s Great Scheme.” You will see why “Christian Holism” is currently becoming the theology the modern church hungers for.)

The work of Christ was universal

I enjoyed reading this very informative book first published 1899. The author gives an excellent history of the early Christian writers from the first to fifth centuries. Universality of the redeeming work of Christ for ALL humanity was cogent in many variant interpretations. Of note is the second chapter "Early Christianity is a Cheerful Religion". The Gospel is good news. There is no bad news in the good news. It was not until the 5th century and St Augustine that the creeds became harsh. The cruelty displayed by Christianity whether Catholic or later centuries Protestant truly boggles the mind. Christianity is a failed and cruel religion. That does not indict the Gospel. Jesus did not come to this earth to establish a new religion! "The Gospel and Christianity are as different as night and day. The author goes to great length to describe the failure of the religion. The Gospel is all about universality. No one is left out in its benefits. All are included. The author is one of the first back in the 19th century to recognize and describe the belief system of the early days just after the events of the Cross. Christianity says its "our" faith, "our" choice and "our" belief. The Gospel Says it was "Christ's faith" , "Christ's choice"; and "Christ's belief". Thus humanity lives in liberty and freedom = The Gospel.
