A Promising Authorial Voice But Overburdened With Editorial Issues
By Amazon Customer
Full disclosure: I am an editor and former editorial director, specializing in speculative fiction.
I have to say that I usually avoid self-published books like the plague, but I saw the description for "Heart of Ice" and decided to take a chance on it. I'm glad I did. Ms. Shea is a talented writer, creating an easily envisioned world and an engaging--if somewhat unchanging--protagonist. I enjoyed the plot, turning a reluctant exiled princess into a heroine despite the prejudices that had compelled her exile in the first place. The story is fresh and original, and is a fun YA read.
However--
The reason I did not give this book five stars or even four has nothing to do with Rakel or her world, but the author's technical issues and lack of a strong editorial point of view. There aren't any glaring mistakes, but a plethora of nasty little authorial habits and grammatical errors that absolutely detract from the overall professionalism of the book. Split infinitives, dangling participles, dialogue tags, word/phrase repetition, homonym errors (the ubiquitous misuse of all right/alright as a particularly glaring issue), passive voice--all of these are problems that a good, strong editor would have spotted and directed the author to address.
And within the story there are a few holes--for example: if royal/noble families are in the habit of killing magical offspring and the regular people are so prejudiced that they, too, attempt to kill any magic user (even the ones that are helping them) then how is it possible for there to be an army of magic users? And then, too the Army of the Chosen's intentions and philosophies are just TOO black. Evil must seduce in order to thrive. On top of that, if all magic users subscribe to the Army's beliefs, then magic users are fulfilling the expectations of non-magical folk and where's the fun in that? If Rakel is so comfortable with the cold--hardening the snow so she can walk on it, or laughing mentally at the idea of getting chilled--then why is her food hot? Wouldn't all that steaming stew cause a problem with a sorceress that wields ice as her element of choice? The author misses out on the chance of having warmth become something pleasant--like Phile's warm hugs or Oskar's warm voice--instead of something feared that has a detriment to her magical powers.
There may be reasons for all these things, but these are questions that I, as an editor, would have asked within the first few chapters. Whether I am right or wrong in my opinions is unimportant, what IS important is that the questions are asked, and that the author considers them within the context of her characters, world, and story.
Editing has to be more than a grammar/spell check using software--for both are singularly inadequate when compared to the eye of an experienced editor. And while I do not believe the issues are so terrible that they will impede any reader's enjoyment of the story--for I really enjoyed the story immensely--it's essential for a talented young writer to break these mistakes before they become habits and impede her career.
Ms. McShea has a fresh, entertaining voice and an individual point of view that is both charming and addictive. As a publisher, I would have bought this story after an initial first read. As an editor, I would have been very busy and the author even more so.
So keep writing! Your book is GOOD and I will read others. But you have to invest in an editor who will invest in you--actually teach you the mistakes you are making, Ms. McShea, and how to stop yourself from making them in the future. Any writer's career is only as good as their last book; your current book must be better--and your next book better still. Best of luck to you!

I actually....really liked it!
By Clare
I'm usually pretty good at being nit-picky and knowing immediately what I don't like in a book upon finishing, but I can't say that with this book. Reasons I loved this book;
1. Rakel's response and reactions to everything actually makes sense, which is something you don't find often in your average novel.
2. She's actually at an appropriate age for such action! It bugs me when I read other books and find 15 year old heroines/heroes acting like adults, which is definitely possible (though highly unlikely), but not really ever executed in a plausible manner.
3. The secondary character were interesting, and I'm very curious to discover their back stories.
4. There was a good balance between action and dialogue - and non-romantic dialogue! It's really only a few paragraphs in the entire book that we get any obvious romantic tendencies, and it was well handled.
My only two qualms is Phile bouncing in so suddenly, and also Rakel's instant expertise with fighting. I can understand her skill with manipulating the snow/ice due to her imprisonment for so many years, but fighting is a whole other thing entirely. I'm curious to see if the author explains this particular skill in the later books.
Also, quick note to the author, thank you for the book! I am definitely looking forward to the next one, but please, please don't make this series super long. It has great potential, and I think that will be served well enough in 3-5 books, without being hounded to death.

Another winner!
By Amazon Customer
As difficult as it is to imagine, KM Shea gets better with EVERY BOOK SHE WRITES!!!!!!! I can hardly wait for Book 2! She is my VERY favorite author! I had to read the entire book in one sitting (sorry about dinner, family - leftovers are in the fridge:-) ) I absolutely love her take on the Snow Queen story (and this was never one of my favorite fairy tale characters). The protagonist, Rakel, is a very admirable individual, in spite of what she has been through in her childhood, and she has multiple possible love interests, one of whom is particularly fascinating. I don't want to give away anything else, but I want to say that this is simply a fantastic rendition of the Snow Queen. Ms. Shea's books are compelling, intelligent, and above all else - CLEAN! I always feel good after reading them, and I have read everything she has written, multiple times. Her editing has only gotten better with time, and that was with most of her ebooks having very few errors to begin with. This one may be completely error free, since I never needed to go back and reread something to make sure I understood it correctly. Some authors have repeated lines in the story that interrupt the flow, misnamed characters, glaring grammatical errors that are truly cringe-worthy; but not Ms. Shea. READ ALL HER BOOKS - You will not regret it!
