Alice and Little Red revisited: A refreshing infusion of the well-worn tale into a new context.

Sara Elaine Violet is a print and e-book writer with high imagination. I found this book a fresh angle on the telling of the fairy tale in a hybrid style of first person narrative and a bit of surrealism. Using the setting and character jumping-off point of a Japanese village, the main character, Arizu, called "Shinku" by her grandmother and villagers, is told all her life of the dangers of the Dark Woods. Yet as we expect, she is eventually lured into it. But into a whole lot more, it seems as we find the underpinnings of "Alice in Wonderland," and "Little Red Riding Hood" craftily infused into her character and life suddenly. About the time the reader, and Arizu herself, begins to seriously doubt her sanity in trying to explain this mashup of myth and reality, an explanation is put forth (no spoilers here).
The story is told with beautiful details and with a spirit of what fairy tails are all about. It was a bit daunting for me revisiting those childhood tales in names and circumstances, but I loved the texture of the Japanese village and characters which people this story on its rich reality side. Overall a thought-provoking and entertaining read.
