Love Finds You in Camelot, Tennessee

This faith-based romantic comedy is a delight. The heroine of this story is full of quirky ideas to save Camelot, and then comes up with a doozy of an idea that will involve the whole town. The serious, yet lovable Amy is able to get grown men to don tights!

Janice Hanna did a great job of pulling me into this story and making me care about how it turned out. The characters are strong and engaging. Love is in the air in predictable ways, but also in unexpected, hilarious ways! This book is a great read, full of heart-warming, small-town living, and the ups and downs of musical theater. The end is satisfying and I was left with a smile on my face.

A Laugh Out Loud Wonderfully Inspiring Romance Novel!

Janice Hanna is one of my favorite authors. She has a spectacular ability to create a contemporary fiction novel, as well as historical novels. I had the pleasure of reviewing her previous Love Finds You novel (LFY in Poetry, Texas) and absolutely loved it. So, I was quite excited to have the opportunity to review Camelot for the author. And, what a delight it was!

I had this book read in no time. It gripped me from page one and held me until the last page. Reading Amy's story of loving Steve since childhood was so sweet! Poor Amy, bless her heart, she is always trying to do something but it always turns out wrong. So, what happens to Amy when she comes up with the idea to bring Camelot Tennessee back on the map financially?

Steve, well he was quite the character! He, too, has loved Amy since childhood, though he's quite shy about it. I had so much fun following Steve in this story...he was such a wonderful guy!

This book is so full of laugh out loud moments, along with some pretty surprising twists! Janice Hanna created a wonderful novel blended with life-like characters, Amy's silly ideas, a new man in town, and God's never ending grace! If you like Knights on horses, and ladies-in-waiting, then this 5 star creation is PERFECT for you! I can't wait to read the next Janice Hanna novel!

The Thinking Woman’s Warrior

A darker tale than the other books in the Fionn mac Cumhaill series, this stand-alone prequel is more satisfying in many ways. Liath Luachra, the troubled and withdrawn woman warrior, has always been one of the best things about the series and O’Sullivan does a tremendous job relating the events of her early life, presenting her as a much more vulnerable character - although just as resilient.
In this story, Liath Luachra is a member of a war party called “The Friendly Ones” and as the only female in a group of brutal men this creates some interesting dramatic tension. The interactions between her and Bressal (the leader of the war party) are particularly enthralling. As always, the plotting is riveting – full of twists and turns – and the action is full on, hell for leather. If you like Games of Thrones style dramas with a strong splash of Celtic culture, this is a book you’ll enjoy. O’Sullivan’s ‘Fionn mac Cumhaill Series’ is one of the most unique works out there in the historical fantasy genre at the moment and this one, in particular, is dark, dangerous and strikingly original.

I was momentarily disappointed that this book was part of the "back story"

I was momentarily disappointed that this book was part of the "back story", not the next in the series chronologically . But once I put that aside, I re-immersed myself in the very believable world the author creates, and couldn't put the book down until I had finished it. It shed so much light on the character of Liath - her grim experiences and her strength in the face of adversity. I am now going back to reread the other books, which I am sure will be all the richer for a greater understanding of Liath. You don't often come across such a compelling hero(ine), written with such depth and understanding. Can't wait for more!

Lainy Lane is a 27-year-old mother of 2 beautiful girls, one of which is now the family guardian angel. She has a wonderful husband that is a large part of the reason she is where she is today. She has always had an obsession with fantasy worlds. When she was younger, she always said that Peter Pan would be the perfect man because when things got rough, he could whisk you away to Neverland, where all your problems would simply disappear. As she grew up, she learned the harsh reality that life can be cruel, and no world (even fantasy ones) is completely without issues and that was when her love for writing really grew. She has always written in some form or fashion, starting out with poetry and song lyrics. She’s always had a story in her head and voices talking to her. Thanks to lots of motivation from her husband, a wonderful laptop with a word processor, more hours than she could ever count, lots of sweat, blood, and tears, she has finally managed to watch her dreams become a reality.

This story left me feeling....whimsical and like the world around me twinkled. I felt like I was transported to a far off place and the rest of the world melted away. Lainy Lane writes a story that will pull you in from the beginning, allowing you to empathize with Hollyn's situation.

Sweet and heartbreaking

There is none greater than a mothers love and Equinoctial Sacrifice proves it.

Hollyn is all alone in the woods and births her daughter at only 7 1/2 months along. Seeing her newborn struggle for life, Hollyn is at a loss until Akiye, the faerie of the Autumn Equinox sees and offers to help her at a price. Hollyn without a doubt accepts her fate and leaves behind her beautiful baby girl Calandra with her husband for the greater good and the destiny that Calandra is the key to.

Beautifully written with such care, this is an awesome prequel to Field of Innocence and I can not wait to start reading it.

Oh how I wan't more of this book!!! From the first page to the last I could not put it down. A perfect way to begin a new series. I can't wait to learn more about what happens to little Calandra! I have a feeling that her fauther Chase is an eivl man and that Drake and Jerreth are too, so I can't wait to see how things come together!!

A story of expedition, survival, battle, and adventure...

The Black Star of Kingston is, in some ways, a punchier read than Smith's first book. It's more the size you'd expect from a kid's chapter book, but he doesn't skimp on action, character, or plot!

This is another story about ordinary people (well, rabbits-who-are-people) caught up in extraordinary times, and I enjoyed the fact that the main character is a little older, and already somewhat developed. In fact, he's an apprentice coal-miner from a long line of coal miners, and it was a pleasure to see how the dedication, discipline, and forethought he had developed as an "ordinary" miner became the foundation for his greatest heroism.

If The Green Ember was about the beauty of art, the need to fight to protect beauty, and the anticipation of renewal, maybe The Black Star of Kingston is about the beauty of honest work, the value of people, and the great calling of making a safe place in a dangerous world.

But those are only the main themes and - themes aside - The Black Star of Kingston is a story of expedition, survival, battle, and adventure. And the illustrations by Zach Franzen are fantastic.

A wonderful tale for all ages!

What a fantastic book! The Black Star of Kingston is another swashbuckling tale full of valiant heroes and daring adventures. But like Smith's debut novel, it is also full of truth, goodness, wisdom, and beauty. Rarely have I read an author who has a gift for inspiring courage and imagination in both children and adults, but S.D. Smith has done it again!

This book takes place about 100 years before the events in The Green Ember; and although it
gives us a peek at some of the heroes of Smith's first novel, this book also stands solidly on its own. Like The Green Ember, The Black Star of Kingston is filled with memorable, courageous, and sometimes frightening characters. We learn how Captain Blackstar became the loyal defender of King Whitson Mariner and his legacy as they forge through difficulty to create a homeland for their community. Once again, there is evil to overcome and there are battles to be fought--both internally and externally. Will goodness prevail?

I cannot recommend Smith's books highly enough. This is one that will be thoroughly enjoyed by children and adults alike. Five stars.

There is much CS Lewis in SD Smith's writing and it is lovely to behold

I am going to venture to guess that Chesterton would have liked this book.

Not because it is the most well written book. Not because it is the most artistic book. Not even that it is the best book of his offerings. But Chesterton and his wife Frances would have loved how much this book loves children and the fiction that feeds their souls.

S.D. Smith is remarkable. He is not the most complex, elegant or flashy writer I have loved but he has to be one of the most humble and honest storytellers I have come across. His writing style is beautiful. I see much CS Lewis in his writing. His stories come from a love of his audience and a skill honed by the classic authors who nourished his soul. And this absolutely works.

This is a story which bears the hallmarks of a love of Middle Earth but not the same intention or mission. I think that the Lord sent JRR Tolkien into his time and place to create Middle Earth to answer the need of that time. To inspire the readers of post-war Europe who were complicit in the eradication of the Shire and the values that dwelled there.

In SD Smith's books we see a related but different passion. His stories speak to the hearts of those of us who are watching the culture crash into our values and rage against the virtue of our children. His stories are told from a more tender point of view and therefore take up residence in the moral imagination of the children of this era and inspire them to love what is lovely, good and beautiful.

Black Star is smaller/shorter than The Green Ember and has a different feel. It is less developed than the Green Ember and the characters are not quite as well drawn. That said, the story arc is really engaging and very powerful.

This is, without a doubt, the kind of book which will support the good we are trying to do in our homes. It is the kind of story which lives in the imagination and continues to whisper truth to the readers long after the book has been returned to the shelf.

About the Author

Intriguing!

The Fountain by Suzy Vadori is a young adult novel. Ava Marshall has looked forward to going to St. Augustus (for high school). St. Augustus is her parent’s alma mater and it is near her grandmother’s home. Ava is hoping to learn more about her mother (who is deceased and no one will speak about). She gets the perfect opportunity when her father has to overseas for a year for work. Unfortunately, it seems that Courtney Wallis has taken a dislike to Ava. Courtney is on the swim team, comes from a rich family, and is the popular girls. Courtney starts out by giving Ava the wrong time for swim practice making her late. Ava is hoping to join the swim team. Courtney then changes the lock on Ava’s locker leaving her without clothes and then plants drugs in the locker. Ava is sent her grandmother’s home for the weekend to await her fate (she could be expelled her very first week). Ava takes the path through the woods to her grandmother’s home. She comes across a beautiful fountain. Ava’s mother loves fountains and wishing wells. Ava makes a very expected wish (we would all do the same in her shoes). The next day Ava wakes up and her wish has come through. Unfortunately, her wish had some unforeseen consequences. Ava decides to find the fountain (which has disappeared) and change her wish. Will Ava be able to change her wish? You really have to be careful or you will get what you wish for!

The Fountain was a fun book to read. It is a fast paced with minimum teenage angst moments. There is no sex in the book (which is unusual for this type of book), but it did not need it. There is a good lesson or moral to the story. I liked how Ava changed throughout the course of the book and it was interesting to follow her adventure. I give The Fountain 4.25 out of 5 stars (I got a little frustrated with Ava a few times). Overall, The Fountain is a very enjoyable book that can be read by readers from 10 to 100!

I really enjoyed this book. I loved Ava's character and her adventure and growth throughout the book. Great world-building and pacing. Would definitely recommend.

You see a fountain, with coins sparkling below crystal clear waters... You take your own coin, pinch your eyes shut, think really hard, and then... You make a wish.

Most people wish for wealth, success, or even love, but not Ava Marshall--Of course she never imagined her wish would come true, either.

The Fountain is a cleverly written Young Adult novel that explores the trials of teen life; from starting a new school, making friends--and learning how to cope with the resident mean girl, and even discovering that there are always consequences to ones actions.

The author, Suzy Vadori, does wonders with taking a simple theme--making a wish--and turning it into a wonderful novel of rich dialogue, memorable characters, and a few twists and turns, that will have the reader immersed in this mystery-laced read, bringing together both past and present, right and wrong, and of course, how one wish creates a ripple effect that may never be undone.

Debut Author, Suzy Vadori, has created an easy read, capturing the essence of youth, but can be a thoroughly enjoyable page-turner for any age.

I highly recommend The Fountain, if you're looking for a fun mystery, with a hint of romance.

What a perfect continuation of this story

What a perfect continuation of this story. It jumps ahead 30 years and we basically have a new set of characters. While Fourth Son focused on Jahnes, this story introduces us to a new cast of characters. Xanthia and Kohlin were very intriguing and I feel like we got just enough in this story to wonder why and how, but there is enough left unanswered that I am clamoring for the next book in the series. Monica is a fantastic story teller, and just like the first book, I found myself angry that I actually had to put the book down many times so I could actually get some sleep. Well done, and I highly recommend.

Loved this book

I had a hard time putting the book down once I got started. At first I was somewhat disappointed that the book did not start where Fourth Son ended, but as I started reading, I was captured by the story. I cannot wait until the third book is available so I can find out if Xanthia and Makalkum wed, does she "take a child from him", or is it discovered that the child she carries belongs to another. Does Kohlin survive? What happens to the teachers and Xanthia's mother? Please hurry and finish the next book so these questions and others are answered! I can't wait!

A Wild Ride!

Monica Poole has a gift for taking you to far away places and making them come alive. She paints a rich tapestry with the twists and turns of a plot that foreshadows the dark secrets of a gifted race of people.

The author provides an extensive set of character lists in the back of the book that made it easy to remember the Trimar Republic's names, places, rulers, classes and rankings. Looking forward to her next book!

Hope's Return .... Dorothy Whittaker

Hope's impression of her birth mother was skewed with the reality of
a murder, the trial, the unknown and a seriously broken relationship.

Lisa's dilemma was the same but different. In her heart she experiences
the unconditional forgiveness from God, Who knows all, but having to wait
for the forgiveness of others who think they know all; it's very painful.

Healing in many ways is needed but could it be, would it be?

Finding Hope in the Right Place

Hope Returns is a story of corrupt politics, deceit, revenge and attempted murder. It’s a story of an adopted child, Hope, meeting her birth-mother, as well as hearing about her birth-father. Most of all, Hope Returns is a story of forgiveness and restoration. This is a moving sequel to Wall of Silence. I highly recommend this book.

An Eye Opening Story of Lives Changed and Second Chances

Just finished "Hope Returns" by Dorey Whittaker. So wonderful to see hopelessness, fear and disfunction completely transformed through God's love and power when lives are surrendered to Him. No matter what anyone may be going through there is always hope. This book is a great read for anyone, whether in the midst of experiencing the hopelessness of life, or just wanting to capture a heartwarming story of much wisdom and love. Can't wait to read book three!

On the more scholarly side,, I have written the following works: "They Bore The Wounds Of Christ: The Mystery Of The Sacred Stigmata," "The Making Of Saints," "Voices, Visions, & Apparitions," and "Patron Saints" (all published with Our Sunday Visitor of Huntington, IN).
