Great Story!

This is a great story with well crafted characters. It has the lyrical words of high fantasy combined with some truely awful horror that works very well. Christine is a living in Berlin with her artist lover, Jude, who is being sponsored by millionaire Mandy Z. Mandy Z sponsors 4 artists per year and heavily supports the arts, however no one likes him and they don't know why. Mandy Z is also a madman who has been killing fairies for their bones.

Christine is haunted by the tragic, accidental death of her parents years before. Although she survived the accident, she has been in pain ever since. Suddenly, she starts remembering her life in Berlin when she was a small child and how her best friend May disappeared one day. Through an accident, Christine wakes up by the Autumn Castle and discovers that May is queen of the fairies. May comes into the Real World and falls in love with Christine's Jude. Suddenly, a woman who is used to having everything wants something that she knows she cannot have..

Meanwhile back at the Autumn Castle time is running out. The worlds are only aligned for a season. The witch Hexebart, holds the queens magic and won't return it. Hexebart is convinced that May killed the True Queen years before and will do anything to hurt her.

The stories is told in four voices: the mad self proclaimed fairy hunter, Queen May who is torn between her duty to her kingdom, her oldest friendship and being in love for the first time, Christine who is fascinated with the Autumn Castle and the angry witch Hexebart. It's a story about love, betrayal and murder. It works very well.

This is the first novel I've read by this author and can't wait to read more!

Fascinating, but could be faster paced....

Christine Starlight has returned to Berlin after many years absence to be with her lover, Jude Upchurch, as he works in an artists' collective to hone his skills. Old memories are haunting her---especially those of 'May Frith' a childhood friend who was stolen from her bed one night and never found.

Mayfridh is the Queen of Faery. One day, a ghost from her past comes to her land and reminds her of the time before she ruled Faery. She returns to the Real World to seek more contact with that ghost.

Mandy Z is a rich sponsor for artists--while secretly he is an artist himself. He's a carver of faery bone collecting these grisly tokens from kills.

If that's not enough to whet your appetite, nothing will. "Autumn Castle" has some thrilling elements, but is not quite as fast paced as I would prefer. As a rule, though, a very satisfying and rich read.

The Autumn Castle, first in the Europa series is a very fascinating urban fantasy from Australian author Kim Wilkins. I highly recommend this wonderfully imaginative series.

The Autumn Castle introduces use to a group of artist who are currently working under a fellowship which allows them to live at the Hotel Mandy Z. in Berlin, Germany. The fellowship is through a very eccentric artist, Immanuel Zweigler whom everyone calls Mandy Z. Jude, one of the artists, lives with his girlfriend, Christine Starlight. Christine is an American who lived in Berlin as a child. The artists are rounded out by Gerda, Pete, and Fabiyan.

Christine has had a very difficult life. While living in Berlin, she befriended a neighbor child everyone called little May. May and Christine were inseparable. One night, May disappeared and was presumed dead. Christine and her parents moved back to America shortly after May's disappearance. In 1989, she lost her parents in a horrific car accident that left her with horrid injuries. The car accident was caused by another driver who never even paused to see if anyone survived. Life was bleak for Christine until Jude appeared in her life like a knight in shinning armor.

Mandy Z. is a very complex and creepy man. He is a world renowned sculptor and is also color blind. Along with being incredibly wealthy, he is also an insane sociopath. He is secretly working on a bizarre sculpture he calls the Bone Wife. This sculpture is not made of marble or any other stone, but of fairy bones. Mandy Z. has a unique gift that allows him to know when a person is really a Fairy.

One fateful day, Christine injures herself and is transported to Ewigkreis, Fairyland. In this strange land, Christine encounters a talking fox named Eisengrimm and the Fairy Queen. Queen Mayfridh is Christine's childhood friend, May. As children, they preformed a `blood bond' that allowed Christine to enter Ewigkreis. One characteristic of Fairyland is residents forget about humans and our world once the seasons change. Queen Mayfridh is amazed and intrigued to be reunited with her friend Christine. After Christine returns to the real world, Mayfridh longs for all she lost when she entered Ewigkreis. Soon a plan is hatched to allow Mayfridh to visit the world she left as a child.

The residents of Hotel Mandy Z. are on a collision course with Mayfridh. She brings out many dark secrets and tempts Mandy Z. to commit unspeakable acts. Mayfridh's visit brings all these horrors and more to pass. Christine, Jude, and the rest are never the same again.

Kim Wilkins has created an incredible tale of morality and madness to delight. Her characters are rich and multidimensional. The plot does seem to lag at times, but that is a result of dealing with character development. We get to know the residents of Hotel Mandy Z. and Ewigkreis very intimately. The twists and turns created in the plot are amazing in their ingenuity. This is not a typical Fairytale nor is it a typical fantasy. At the end, Wilkins treats us to a real Fairytale that closes the plot in such a way that you crave more.

invaluable!

I live in Western NY. I have fear driving on the snow covered and icy roads. Since I have no choice, I tried to find ways to help my confidence in driving. This CD REALLY helped me. The section on breathing is especially helpful in calming me and making me aware of how tense my grip is on the steering wheel, and my posture, etc. I could feel myself relax and handle the fear. I approach the drive with calm rather than anxiety. This cd is priceless.

The best I've found!

I am a long time meditator and student of meditation techniques and I'm impressed with this CD. I found it to have the essential parts of good meditation practice, packaged specifically for the motorist /commuter. Clear instruction/guided meditations, with very little fluff, that you can practice while driving. I spend 3 hours a day commuting, in heavy traffic, to and from work and noticed the difference inn the first day. I definitely recommend it to anyone that routinely spends time in traffic or otherwise just finds driving stressful!

Wonderful book

When Ruth came to town with the twins Levi and Sarah's life's changed. Watching these two try to find the perfect family for the twins knowing that they both wanted the chance to be there parents. Sarah and Levi have cared about each other for a long time. When they finally admit this to each other it's amazing.

Though rather predictable, I enjoyed this light-hearted romance with a twist of sadness. The characters were real, the setting graceful, and the plot kept me reading. Though not necessarily a book to make one think, it was an enjoyable light read.

Inspiring and challenging

This book packs a huge punch in a short number of pages! The hard cover comes in at 79 pages and ebook at 49. I believe I first heard about this book through The Dynamic Catholic Institute, but I cannot remember if it was a tweet, email or Facebook link. But however I stumbled across it I am very thankful. I am currently working through a list of Catholic books to read this year, and this was the first one I finished.

This book stirs a lot up in our hearts and in our imaginations. The more if it I read the more excited I got. The book begins with: "There were no pews or seats, only cold, wet sand. But that wasn't going to stop three million energetic young people from celebrating Mass that day on Copacabana Beach in Brazil.
"Go!" said Pope Francis. "You have been able to enjoy the wonderful experience of meeting Jesus, meeting him together with others, and you have sensed the joy of faith. But the experience of this encounter must not remain locked up in your life or in the small group of your parish, your movement, or your community."" Talking about World Youth Day 2013 and the commission that Pope Francis gave to the youth present. He also quote Pope Francis in There were no pews or seats, only cold, wet sand. But that wasn't going to stop three million energetic young people from celebrating Mass that day on Copacabana Beach in Brazil. "Go!" said Pope Francis. "You have been able to enjoy the wonderful experience of meeting Jesus, meeting him together with others, and you have sensed the joy of faith. But the experience of this encounter must not remain locked up in your life or in the small group of your parish, your movement, or your community." And that is the premise of this book. We are called to be fools for Christ and to make a mess in the world. And through the rest of the book Matthew gives some guidance in how to go about that!

In the chapter on it being time to make a mess Matthew states: "Sure, we can point to many bright spots worth celebrating within the Church today, but the bleeding continues. None have yet reversed the mass exodus of modern man from church. We're in the midst of an identity crisis. We've forgotten we were made to live courageously." First he outlines some of the problems and then he goes on to challenge us to look at our own lives and mission and make changes to fufill the commission. He also declares "Are you ready to start a new era of evangelization unlike the world has ever seen? Good. Now let's get started.
Pope Francis was right. It's time to make a mess. It's time to change the world. And we are just the fools to do it." So will you take the rick, pick up the book and read it, but don't just put it on a shelf when you are done learn to live it!

Next he goes on to outline what needs to change. "Christianity has a very specific vision for how we should see the world and ourselves - a vision of man fully alive. But modern minds are skeptical. They don't take us seriously." And only we can do that by our witness but not specifically what we say but by what we do. Matthew says "Sure, we need inspirational leadership. We need solid teaching. Our organizations need to be more professional. We need to do community and fellowship better." And one of the most impacting statements in the book for me was "The truth is that the function of every no in Christianity is to provide us the freedom to say yes to something better, something corresponding positive points rather than the negative - when we talk about our faith in terms of what we are for rather than what we are against. This is an approach referred to as "affirmative orthodoxy." And it's an important lesson, but it's not enough." And "In other words, instead of talking about how beautiful the faith is, let's show the world its beauty. Instead of insisting how good the Church is, let's be good. Instead of lecturing about truth, let's live a life transformed by it." The only real lasting witness we will have is our own lives.

Matthew declares: "We forget that being a true Christian is not really about having the right opinions; it's about having the right heart - which is a very different thing. An orthodox life is not the mental challenge of staying between the lines, but an exercise in wildly overflowing the boundaries of the heart. Jesus' love is not measured and controlled. It is total and wild." Can we learn to live a strong passionate faith from a heart flowing with the power of the Holy Spirit? Again quoting Pope Francis: "Pope Francis points out that "the Church grows by attraction, not proselytizing." 6 The beauty in the Church is irresistible. The problem is that our sin distorts it. The saints learn to magnify that beauty through their love and humility, rather than distort it with proselytizing and pride. We need saints. And not just saints of the past - your sainthood." We need to be saints, saints in the world, living and working and serving.

There is an interesting quote from Peter Kreeft that really got me thinking "Can you imagine what twelve more Mother Teresas would do for this world? If twelve more people gave Christ 100 percent of their hearts 100 percent of the time and held nothing back, absolutely nothing?" Can you imagine how the world would be turned upside down? Later Matthew says: "We're scared to let go of our need to succeed. We're scared of not getting credit. We're scared of not getting the honor and power that come with whatever career path we're on. We're scared of missing an opportunity. We're scared of having our struggles and achievements go unacknowledged. We're scared of not maximizing our potential and our productivity. We're scared of being alone." So are you going to let your fears win, or will you open yourself up to the Holy Spirit and learn to be Jesus's hands and feet in the world.

This book will defiantly challenge you. All you have to lose is your frustrations, disappointments, and focus on self, And you have the whole world to gain and to serve! Will you try?

An envangelization manifesto

"Messy & Foolish" by Matthew Warner is a manifesto on why we need to evangelize today. Evangelization is such an important thing that we need to attack it not worrying about being silly, messy, "crazy," or any other adjective you can think up. If we don't evangelize, the world will fall into a pit. We cannot accept that.
If you want to wake others up to why you are so on fire for evangelization, I'd pick it up and give it to them. If you aren't sure if you should evangelize, pick it up for answer. It's a super quick read: I read the whole book in a doctor's waiting room.
I only see 1 negative point: the subtitle should be "why" rather than "how to" as he explains the former really well but is without too many concrete details on the latter.

Small but powerful inspiration for evangelization

Matthew Warner's "Messy & Foolish" is a small but powerful book about the need for enthusiastic, energetic, and faith-filled evangelization in the world today. Taking his cue from Pope Francis' famous admonition to the crowds at World Youth Day to go back to their homes and make a "mess" through their faithful witness, Warner outlines in broad strokes both the why and the how of evangelization in the modern world.

Warner dispenses with "churchy" language in favor of simple, direct prose that provides a much needed boost to the average Catholic's understanding of and enthusiasm for evangelization. This would be an ideal book for study by small groups; the book is supplemented by a web site which will post related interviews and a study guide when the book is available in February 2016.

About the Author
Born in Danville, Kentucky, on January 31, 1949, Alan Thompson grew up in his beloved Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A 1966 graduate of Chapel Hill High School, he received his B.A. from the University of Kentucky in 1970, and his J.D. from the same institution in 1973. He has practiced law for the past forty years, primarily in Atlanta, Georgia, and now resides in Georgetown, South Carolina. Alan's civil trial work extended to dozens of jurisdictions throughout the United States, Australia and England, and he contributed to several professional journals and treatises dealing with his particular area of expertise, construction law. He began writing fiction seriously in 2008, and his first novel, A Hollow Cup, was published in 2011. The Black Owls was released in 2013, followed by The Kingfishers, Gods and Lesser Men and Lucifer’s Promise. He and his wife Barbie have two sons, one a lawyer in Salt Lake City, the other a Navy helicopter pilot currently stationed in San Diego, California. An intricate and compelling read

Set in 1960's New Orleans where the the Catholic church reigns and elite Creole families use and abuse the church's power, The Nun's Dowry takes us on an intricate search to discover who is entitled to inherit a young nun's money and property. The connections between family and church, past and present weave a spider's web of corruption and abuse. None of the characters emerge unscathed as we learn about their involvement in the case. Alan Thompson knows the law and his novel unfolds with the methodical pace of a high stakes legal argument. The pleasure of reading The Nun's Dowry comes in solving the jigsaw puzzle of the case against the backdrop of the city of New Orleans with its mansions, its red light district in Storyville, its cemeteries and convents.

A timely epic

Set in New Orleans and other Louisiana sites, locations and ancestry play major roles in the labyrinth of discovery that propels us to the conclusion of this thought provoking drama. Skillful sleuths will enjoy scratching clues from the polished veneer of Thompson’s storytelling. Vivid character descriptions give us people to admire and despise as we follow the complex plot weaving a tapestry of lives involving sex, prestige, money, power, love and abuse. To say more would be to tell too much. Enjoy it. I did.

It brought out the sleuth in me.

Every chapter of The Nun's Dowry will keep you guessing. It brought out the sleuth in me. Just when I thought I had it figured out (who did what to whom?), I had to return to the drawing board. Thompson's description of the New Orleans area and the Catholic Church in the 60's was well researched. A real page turner, this is his best book ever. I would love to see it made into a movie.
