In 2006, the book River of Destiny: The Life and Work of Binh Pho was published in conjunction with an exhibition of the artist’s work at the Long Beach Museum of Art. A collaboration between artist Binh Pho and writer/curator Kevin Wallace, the book juxtaposed the artist’s work with his life story, Vietnamese history and myth and an exploration of symbolism and philosophy. The exhibition received rave reviews and was enthusiastically received by museum visitors, and the book continues to make an impression upon readers, allowing them to experience Binh Pho’s work and his life’s journey.
By the time the book was published, the two had already begun discussing another collaboration. River of Destiny had covered Pho’s childhood in Vietnam, eyewitness accounts of the Fall of Saigon, life in a Communist prison camp, his daring escape and new life in the United States of America. They decided to move beyond biographical exploration to take a bold, visionary approach to the new project.
Shadow of the Turning, like its predecessor, focuses on art, philosophy and storytelling, yet is an entirely fictional story, blending the mythic worlds of fairy tale, fantasy, romance and adventure. It creates a bridge between literature, art world approaches to concept and narrative and craft traditions. The story is “illustrated” using an exciting new body of work by Binh Pho, which combines woodturning, sculpture, painting and art glass. As the storyline explores collaboration, a diverse group of international artists was brought together to collaborate on works of art that celebrate traditional craft materials and processes to redefine the boundaries of contemporary art.

I purchased this book directly from Binh Pho when he opened the art show for the book in Birmingham, AL. The book is written by Binh Pho and Kevin Wallace. The description is incorrect on Amazon, the book was a collaboration. This is a fictional book that, if you know Bihn Pho, you can see several little parts of the biography, RIVER OF DESTINY, by Kevin Wallace, intertwined. You have to stick with the beginning of the book as you figure out who all of the characters are and how they fit. Once that is established, be prepared to finish in one sitting. There are a few of the characters that you will love and some you will despise for what they do and how they get away with what they do. The story finishes, but the ending sets you up for the sequel, yes the sequel and be prepared to find the third book by this duo weaving fact and fiction from the first two books.......... And did I mention, the art work is amazing. Binh Pho's intricate work is like no others. Many have tried and failed to imitate him. There is a reason that his work is collected by museums and collectors alike all over the world.
