Fire In The Blood (Shards Of A Broken Sword Book 2), by W.R. Gingell

A princess in a dragon-guarded tower. The prince who is to rescue her. The prince’s ensorcelled dragon. And one enchanted keep that might just be enough to kill them all...

It’s widely known that Princess Kayami Koto is held captive in the Enchanted Keep by a dragon of great ferocity and skill. So when the bold, daring and crafty Prince Akish attempts to rescue her, it seems only sensible to bring his own dragon, Rafiq.
But the Keep’s dragon is only the first Circle in the Keep’s Seven Circles of Challenge, and both Rafiq and the prince will have to keep their wits about them if they’re to survive and rescue the princess.

There to help them is the princess’ serving maid, Kako. But why does Kako seem so familiar to Rafiq? Will she really help them, or does she have her own agenda? Rafiq isn’t sure, but he knows one thing: Kako may be the only person who can free him from his bondage to the prince, and that’s worth any amount of risk.

Fun, well-written read with a prince you will love to hate
By I. Khanani
One of the things I love about this series is that Gingell takes your standard "fairy tale" set up and then tweaks one of your standard assumptions (or a few). It makes for fun, and a unique and intriguing take on archetypal stories / characters. For example, in the first book in this series, "Twelve Days of Faerie," our hero is not actually prince charming, but good old dad, and the heroine is an enchantress who is both brilliant and capable, and not in need of rescuing. Together they make a fantastic set of main characters.

In "Fire in the Blood" we open with a prince riding to rescue a princess held captive in a cursed Keep. Only we realize almost immediately that the prince is a piece of work, and happily start rooting against him before he ever reaches the Keep. And in fact, at one point I began to doubt that there was a princess involved at all (I was wrong, but that's all I'll say for fear of spoilers).

I also love that the 'Shards of a Broken Shard' series are separate stories, entwined together by the shards, but also capable of standing alone. So if you haven't read Book 1, that's okay. You can read this now and pick that up tomorrow.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. The structure of the story became a little repetitive, but that's to be expected when you have seven challenges (circles) to work through. Each chapter was a different circle of the Keep that the characters had to navigate. There were definitely some surprises, and a few things I saw coming. I enjoyed the voice, the characters, (the dragons!), and the story itself. I will admit to loving Book 1 more, but this was a solid and engaging read, and I will probably pick it up again when I'm looking for a fun, well-written read to sink back into.

This was an amazing book. The characters are all new
By Lana
This was an amazing book. The characters are all new. I have a feeling though that someday they might meet the characters from the first book. But for now, let's have fun with these ones.

Kako is snarky, and has secrets, and is a joy to read. Prince Akish is one of the most stuck up characters I have ever read, and it was nice to see that Kako does not take his crap. I really enjoy girls who can stand up for themselves, without being shrewish about it. I love self confidence.

Prince Akish is selfish, stuck up, and classist. I apologize if it spoils anything, but it doesn't take long for him to become the villain of the story, such as it is. He is a total jerk, which makes for some really good interactions throughout the story.

I really liked Rafiq. He is independent and has a mind of his own, and hates being magically shackled to the Prince. He really seems to come into his own through the book. He is a bit the strong, silent type, but not too broody. He makes a great protagonist.

The story is a lot of fun to read. As our three main characters travel through the Seven Circles of Challenge, you the reader get to know a lot about them, even as they learn about each other and themselves. I got very emotionally involved with the characters. I felt joy, sorrow, frustration. Any book that I can immerse myself in that far is a winner for me. It left me wanting to know more.

Predictable, light and enjoyable
By Clare
This was a fun quick read, and fairly predictable (though with all the obvious hints in the beginning, I'm not entirely sure that's not something the author intended).
Character-wise;
Kaka was a fun, light character - a bouncy heroine that didn't actually end up annoying me. I enjoy her mischievousness and certain naivety, and I felt she was the only character who didn't feel pretty flat. I especially appreciated the slightly ambiguous ending of the book. We all *know* they'll end up together, but it's nice for once that an author doesn't have two character immediately fall in love with each other after two days and then marry them off.

Also, while I liked the idea of the dragon-human construct thing, Rafiq kind of bored me.

My big complaint is how the villain is so severely underdeveloped. I didn't really hate him - I just thought he was a super bratty, selfish, malicious person, and not in an intriguing way. Not that I like it when psychotic villains are made to look sympathetic and reasonable, but I just didn't really care about Akish and I felt more could have been done to show his true villainy.

While I found the plot predictable, I still enjoyed this as a quick read, more so than the first book in this Shards of a Broken Sword series.
